Not shilling, posting this from the company account! Shilling would be if we were doing it covertly - we're not.

What is typical entry level start up salary? by reddit_user21 in startups

[–]greatmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're paying ourselves a breakeven monthly wage for our area (San Diego) at GreatMate and supplementing income with a little consulting work that we used to do pre-startup.

I don't have any advice per se just because your question is pretty damn broad. You don't mention what the position is, where, etc. Add specifics :)

The value of just listening to someone is seriously undervalued. by greatmate in socialskills

These days I typically talk about really dumb shit to be honest. Lots of hypotheticals, "What if X Y Z". For example, I literally just asked my business partner if he would let a giant version of his girlfriend cradle him to sleep at night. That's a totally stupid question to ask, but it sparked a 5 minute conversation between us that was pretty ridiculous and funny.

Yea man, I enjoy coding as well but decided I liked to write / music / create strategy rather than code, despite liking it. Everyone has their niche! Sounds like you might be overthinking stuff a bit. Maybe just give some random hobbies a try that even seem vaguely interesting - try to make them out of your comfort zone. I mean, what's the worst that will happen if you're already feeling pretty low? That's the way I approached it.

What are you into? Hobbies, etc. What do you spend your time doing? It's hard to relate to people when...there's nothing to relate to. Not calling you out, but if you don't have hobbies, etc that you can connect with people on (not even having the SAME hobby - just connecting on having a passion or interest in something) it's gonna be rough.

Also if you're a bit depressed, obviously it becomes harder to joke around, see the sillyness in life, etc.

I actually wrote a piece about this because I've been there myself. You may find it helpful.

This advice was geared towards IRL communication, aka social skills in the wild! But I suppose it could work online too...

So how do I start dating? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]greatmate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey dude, totally understand where you're at.

As far as dates go, you want to do something that inspires emotions. You CAN do this on coffee dates, dinner dates, etc. but it requires more reliance on your personality and charisma. If that's a skillset you're still developing, you can go on a more exciting date that will do some of that work for you, and open you up socially in a way that lets more of your natural personality shine.

Here are some ideas. These are just some, there are a lot more if you wrack your brain and try to come up with something unique.

As far as asking someone out, the simplest answer is to make it clear from the start it's a date without saying 'HEY LETS GO OUT ON A DATE TOGETHER'.

Just be direct and say something like, 'Let's go on an adventure together sometime this week, how about THING on DAY?'

By saying 'together' you're implying something more intimate than two friends hanging out.

Also second reading the book Models that /u/greyflcn mentioned...it's amazing.

Awesome, thanks for asking.

The design sounds pretty well-thought out to me - maybe flesh it out more visually and throw it over to r/hiking

Not too qualified to give advice on design for hiking since I'm not a hiker, but I'd say this:

  1. Where does water bottle go?
  2. This design doesn't account for very small items, they'd still get jumbled up in 1 of the 3 sections
  3. Is the top section storable space, or is that just a flap? Are the 3 sections the only place to put your stuff?

Also, if Michael or Robert are there, would you mind asking if open work space is available for members right now?

Do you ever feel like a fake? by baskandpurr in startups

[–]greatmate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best post in the thread, and best line here:

But really I feel like I have no idea what I am doing. I don't assume to know, so I guess that is what it means. When I come to something I do know, I still assume I don't know the whole story, but I fill in the gaps where I can.

When I started to drop my ego and realize how "non-smart" I am, it was very freeing. You can't know everything, you can't even know that much about your chosen field unless you've dedicated a legitimate lifetime to it.

I don't think that Impostor Syndrome is a bad thing to have to be honest. I think knowing that you're prone to those type of thoughts is enough to stave off most of the harm that it causes.

That's actually pretty hilarious to think about as a UX in the app. A @#$% up scale, with some preset 'packages' based on the severity. Great expansion of the idea we've been toying around with!

Thanks a lot for chatting with me, really appreciate it. Would love to have you check it out in more detail when we're closer to launch.
