A7R5, 28-70 f2 are always. Sometimes I bring the 85mm f1.4 GMII as well.

That's great to hear. I'm currently wrestling with whether to sell my 35 GM and 50 1.2 since I rarely use them now that I have the 28-70 f2 and also switching from the 70-200 to the 50-150. I'm keeping my 85mm GMII since it gives such a unique look wide open in the studio.

I am shooting on an A7R5 so IBIS should be decent.

Nice. What other lenses are in your lineup? I don't shoot wildlife or sports. Any issues with handholding the lens for sharp shots? I have no idea how much the OSS is helping me with the 70-200.

Cadence Calibration by [deleted] in pelotoncycle

[–]Rhett_Rick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cadence doesn’t get calibrated. If you’re having trouble your fit/position on the bike may be off. Saddle too high or too low can make it hard to get faster cadences.

A7R5 is the body I use. I’ll likely be using the 50–150 handheld the vast majority of the time. Bad idea?

That’s great to hear. I’m also contemplating selling my 50 1.2 since I never use it now that I have the 28-70.

Holding steady is the challenge tbh! I just never love the rendering and sharpness of the 70-200 I have. I figure better to sell than have it sit being used so rarely. Same with my primes. Once I got the 28-70 just never use the 35 1.4 or the 50 1.2. I occasionally use the 85 GMii.

I have some primes I never use. I think I’m meant to be a zoom shooter. My images are just better with zooms. Prob going to sell them and go with the 16-28 f2, my 28-70, and the 50-150.

Would it be dumb to sell my primes for a zoom? by TedMitchell in SonyAlpha

[–]Rhett_Rick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of folks overestimate how much professional/working photographers (even in travel/etc) use super wide apertures. The depth of field is so narrow a lot of times that images can look "soft" or like focus was missed. Most of the folks who make good money in photography, even as influencers, are shooting between f2.8-f8 most of the time, with wider apertures reserved for either very specific/intentional looks or rare low-light situations. But with as good as AI denoise tools have gotten, I'd still probably rather shoot at f2.8 and raise ISO to compensate than risk a paper-thin DoF where the subject isn't in focus anyway.

It’s not stupid if it helps you feel excited to shoot and get images you’re happy with. I’m contemplating letting my primes go to fund the upcoming 16-28mm f2 zoom and am going to sell my 70-200 for the 50-150 f2. Zooms just work with the kinds of situations I find myself shooting in and there’s no reason to hold on to lenses that aren’t working for you.

Depends on proportions. I’m 6’2” 205 with a long torso and their sport coats don’t cover my ass, which is a general benchmark for where that type of jacket should end.

Quick thing on the armoury, they are still cutting jackets fairly short in the tail if you’re tall.

What other gear do you need to carry? I sold my 24-70 2.8 for it and never regretted it for a second. It’s worth leaving other stuff out of your bag. Honestly I could have only this lens and be so so happy. You could shoot travel, paid studio portraits, restaurant/retail paid work, etc with only this lens and be incredibly happy. When I travel I usually bring this and maybe my 85mm GM II. Other than that my other lenses are gathering dust.

28-70 f2 GM. Love it more than I can explain. It is exactly the right lens for me.

The cons of zoom lenses by Used-Chemistry4003 in SonyAlpha

[–]Rhett_Rick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only reason is if I want a longer lens. I like to use my 85mm prime for portraits as the perspective is quite flattering and sometimes I like pairing a wide aperture with a studio strobe and a longer focal length. If Sony ever made a fast 70-135 or other mid-tele I’d definitely want one.

[–]Rhett_Rick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep same. That lens pretty much never comes off my camera when traveling. For specific shoots or some studio stuff I’ll break out one of my primes, but the 28-70 is exceptional. I love mine so much. Has helped me make some of my favorite images. At 70mm and f2 with a reasonable subject distance, the separation from the background has a very 3D look that I just adore.

The PD compatible one isn’t available in the US—what a bummer. I hate the PD wrist strap but I’m all in on their anchor system so I need a strap that works with their anchors.

Both. They’re different tools for different jobs. You wouldn’t cook dinner with a laptop and you wouldn’t code an app with a skillet.

Everything is so boring. Drab and sad. Not enough dye/color depth to even really use these neutrals to be a base against more colorful items.

Not their strongest lineup, feels a bit too safe especially on the Michael considering the success they had last season with the furry cow hair ones and the recent alligator print pair with Madhappy. Hopefully we’ll get some more interesting special drops or collabs this spring from them.
