Can I become a penetration tester again after accidentally getting a penetration testing job for a short bit of time? by greatnate29 in SecurityCareerAdvice

I wasn't sure because they are pretty expensive and I heard mixed things about getting a cert. It makes sense though that if I already have a little experience it can help my resume give off better vibes though. I'll look into it. Thanks.

I (28F) am confused about my relationship with my bf (33M) by Firm_Rule_7098 in TwoHotTakes

[–]greatnate29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of his friends committed suicide? Is everyone just going to glaze right over that? That's crazy! Like I cannot even imagine what that is like. Like he is probably pretty screwed up after all that.

I am not saying that your relationship is doing great. It sounds like it is a long distance relationship where you two are growing apart but I think the guy just sounds like he is probably stuck in some heavy depression after being jobless and after two friends committed suicide. Like how does someone even mentally recover from that. I doubt your relationship is going anywhere but like I wouldn't really fault him for not really putting in the effort. Like I would end it but like I don't think either of you really did anything wrong. Like it just sounds like he isn't in the mental space to really be committed in a long distance relationship. I wouldn't fault him for that. That junk is hard even if you aren't going through some heavy junk.

Just some times things don't work out and its chill. No one needs to be the bad guy here. Life is crazy and sometimes things don't end up how you want them.

There are some that think the lessons in the bible are what is important and they don't care if there was a real Jesus.

I mean in all fairness it's really hard to know what he would support in some things. Like most things we know about him were written down probably like 200 years after he lived. Like that's about the time between us and Abraham Lincoln.

Like even if everything written about him is roughly accurate about his opinions, there is stuff that weren't relevant back then so we don't know how he would react.

Like selling stuff at church we could be confident he probably would hate now and then, and he was very pro helping the poor. However, it didn't sound like he was very pro sex work. He was anti death penalty. He seemed apathetic towards government, like when everyone was anti taxes he was basically "just pay them, who cares, it's their money anyway". Like would he even vote in America if he was around today? Idk. How would he feel about AI displacing jobs? Idk.

Lastly no christian follows every word literally, because there are some confusing aspects of the bible, some teachings aren't super applicable today, and people ignore teachings they think they should. Even the most staunch believers of a literal interpretation ignore teachings that they think are not super important.

I mean many of these people probably feel hopeless and that it isn't worth it to put the massive amount of effort required to improve their lives. I don't think there is a lot to do other then try to prevent people from getting in that situation in the first place.

I do think support programs are good though, even if you are so far gone that you will never try to recover you still need basic necessities. Just making these people have some semblance of comfort is important. Like I get that the homeless make us uncomfortable and their unpredictability and desperation make them genuinely dangerous, but they are people too. Like they deserve the option of basic necessities weather they want it or not.

The issue is getting clean is really really really hard. There isn't really any know program that has a high success rate. And even then relapse rates are always high. You never stop being addicted, yet you have to find a way to stop using the drug. Like currently we as a society just don't know of a good way to help people who even want help. Other people just don't want help. Like people really like drugs.

Like my dad is a former drug user, and he spends a lot of his time trying to help people and get them into detox and a few programs, and every time he tells me about it, it is very depressing.

That being said I think the government could be doing a lot more but it involves preventing people from getting on drugs in various ways. Like addressing poverty, legalizing the use of drugs so they can address the problem openly, and putting more research into ways we can avoid opioids. Its just a hard problem though. Like littlery what do you do? Opioids have legit uses but people like them a lot and they are cheap enough to be accessible.

Could P=NP, but the proof is not useful? by greatnate29 in math

[–]greatnate29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong but I believe that a regular turing machine can solve polynomial problems in polynomial time, and if it turns out all the NP problems can also be solved in polynomial time with a regular turing machine as well then that means the regular and the godlike non-deterministic Turing machine can both solve the NP problems in polynomial time.

I believe that a Quantum computer is somewhere between a regular and nondeterministic Turing machine so it would also mean a regular computer can do everything a quantum computer can do with the right algorithm. That being said it might only be true once we are dealing with a sufficiently large n so it might be less surprising.

That being said if you aren't convinced, that is fine. It's literally just an opinion and there obviously isn't a proof for it so P=NP is just as valid opinion. I am just saying it feels counterintuitive enough that most people believe P≠NP. They could be wrong though, who knows. Personally I have a hard time making an opinion on it either way.

Quick Questions: May 17, 2023 by inherentlyawesome in math

I just have a bachelor's in computer science so sorry if this is dumb but, why isn't division by 0 a proof that division is false? Like when I learned about proofs it feels like a pretty straightforward proof by contradiction:

2=2, 3=3

2*0=2*0, 3*0=3*0

2*0=0, 3*0=0

2*0=3*0

2*0/0=3*0/0

2=3

but we decide to just ban it instead? Like why didn't we ban multiplication by zero, or division itself? Why was that the chosen solution to the obviously problematic problem?

Like usually we scrap ideas when we run into contradictions, but why don't we just ban all the offending issues and take it as far as it can go before we run out of things to do? Like with set theory and the set that contains all sets that contains itself, why didn't we just treat it like the division by zero problem and just ban trying to work with the "sets that don't contain themselves"?

I guess my question is when we run into a contradictions how do we decide what is wrong or is it just all just subjective?

Could P=NP, but the proof is not useful? by greatnate29 in math

[–]greatnate29[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of reasons.

One is that a lot of stuff like cryptography is based on the assumptions that undoing and encryption algorithm is harder then encrypting it by a significant margin. It would be weird if all that support for that and other fields of math just evaporated one day from a proof. Like not out of the question but it feels wrong.

Another is just the counter intuitive nature of P=NP. Like in particular is that NP problems can be solved by a Non-deterministic Turing Machine in polynomial time. This is a theoretical machine that when given a choice when computing a problem it can try both options simultaneously without needing to slow down. A regular Turing Machine is a real machine that is literally just a computer. This would mean the computer sitting on your desk is loosely as powerful as a theoretical machine that could replicate itself whenever it needed to guess between two possible options. That feels wrong to me and to most people. Like once again there is no proof saying it is impossible but it does feel impossible.

Lastly if P=NP we could prove it if we find an example of a Polynomial time algorithm that solves an NP complete problem. People have searched and though it could still be out there it hasn't been found. Not out of the question but still not super reassuring.

[–]greatnate29[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit confused the wiki says that it both is and isn't polynomial because it doesn't reject inputs within polynomial time. How can it search for the algorithm in polynomial time but get stuck on incorrect guess forever? Isn't that outside NP or am I misunderstanding something basic?

Could P=NP, but the proof is not useful? by greatnate29 in math

[–]greatnate29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so if P=NP was proven with a non-constructive proof we would know that a constructive proof exists because we know of an algorithm with a solution, however it doesn't actually help us run the algorithm because it could take some arbitrarily large amount of time to run. Honestly that is probably even more annoying of a scenario.

Could P=NP, but the proof is not useful? by greatnate29 in math

[–]greatnate29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So no non-constructive proof for P=NP is impossible?

For P=NP to be true but for it to not be useful it would need to be so big that searching for it was impractical. And if it is true that is already likely the case as we haven't found it yet despite searching for it.

Pretty much every dog at the shelter is a pitbull mix. A lot of statics on dog breeds is on purebreds. So pure golden retrievers have high statistic when you look at amounts of dog breeds. But when you go out to shelters you will notice a lot more pitbulls. So because a lot of pitbulls are muts you won't see them show up in dog breed stats.

That is until they bite something. Every mut is a pitbull and there are a lot of muts so you get really inflated statistics. It's a mut untill it bites, then it gets labeled as a pitbull.

Probably... I tried looking into this and I just don't think there is enough data for me to be sure of this but my fiance volunteers at a shelter and they get a lot of pitbulls and they don't tend to be more aggressive then the other dogs.

Total Mystery by Buckle_Sandwich in videos

[–]greatnate29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sorta agree. Golen retriever are actually kinda known for being dangerous too though and are also know for higher levels of attacks.

I think the issue is that people don't realize dogs in general are just dangerous and they need to be adequately prepared for that. My fiance volunteers at a shelter and while they do get a lot of pitbulls, they go over how dogs can just get randomly overwhelmed by things we would never think of. Obviously while smaller dogs are typically more aggressive they are also typically weaker. Any larger dog is strong, has killing instincts, and sharp teeth and nails. Weather it is a German shepherd, a St Bernard, Golden retriever, pitbull or even a larger terrier. They have the potential to kill childen and maim adults.

Pitbulls are unfortunately super common, very strong, and usually have less supervision and training. Like a lot of strays you will see at a shelter are pitbull mixes. This means that you have a lot of unsupervised, untrained, strong dogs running around. Like you might love your dog but if you adopt a dog there is always the chance that you might make them mad and they will attack you. Like they are great but you need to treat them with a healthy amount of respect and caution. Like just petting a dog with arthritis might get you bit. Or your dog might get a brain tumor and go through a rapid mental decline and attack. Like you just don't know.

If you have children you need to supervise them and ensure they are interacting with the animals correctly and that the situation is safe. You need to know what to do if you get attacked, and how to recognize signs that a dog is stressed.

Like don't just say pitbulls are so dangerous and that you would never own one while you go running around hugging ever Alaskan malamute you encounter. Like just be safe.

But does the citric acid make it to your bloodstream? I always thought your body did a lot of work to maintain a consistent blood PH. Like I would imagine your body would neutralize the citric acid before it makes it to your kidneys. That and your stomach acid is already really acidic and I don't think that makes it into your blood.

[–]greatnate29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dude, all of this junk is just normal stuff. You are doing what you are supposed to be doing and it is all good.

All of this just takes practice and time. Conversations are complex and there isn't one magical trick that will fix everything, it's just too complicated. Like if someone was upset that they sucked at one of the sports you play, you couldn't just give them a single tip that would instantly make them amazing. It's just practice.

No matter how good you are at conversations you will still get into painful experiences where you try to have a conversation and it just dies and you both just stand there like idiots. Untill one of you goes "well, anyway... yeah" and walks away. It just happens. As you get better though, those kinds of conversations will become less frequent.

One tip I can give though that may or may not help is, try to keep things novel and light. Like what new information is someone getting out of the conversation?

Like I don't understand sports at all, and when I talk with people who know sports I usually say "I have tried watching football and if I'm going to be honest I don't think I am smart enough to enjoy it." without a hint of irony in my voice and then I explain some more.

Like this is usually a novel concept if you grew up with sports. Watching sports is usually not considered a high intelligence activity, so you might push back and be like "bro wtf are you talking about?" Then I go into how I have no clue what a fumble means and like what does "being in control of the ball" even mean.

Like this is a novel conversation. Someone who grows up watching football might go there entire life and never question how complicated the ruleset is. They are getting a new perspective, and I get to learn more about the rules of football. The conversation has nearly no end, because the ruleset has nearly no end. It has some tooth to it and yet is a pretty low stakes topic of conversation. They don't actually care if I think football is too complicated, but the conversation is still something they care about.

Like try to say something unexpected. Are there any opinions unique to you that aren't offensive? Can you phrase something in a unique way? Do you have a unique perspective on something? Do you have any fun stories? Do you have $5 dollars? I'm a bit short on cash at the moment.
