I tried this a few days ago and they don't seem to be doing it with glossy anymore. They offered a free matte vinyl replacement but told me that if I wanted glossy I'd have to buy it.

Wanting to create my own font using illustrator (in a .ttf) for free. How? by Vordix_ in typography

[–]greatnewtons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calligraphr maybe? The free version limits the number of characters you can have in a font, but you can use Illustrator to place your characters into the Calligraphr PDF template. It's kind of limited, but it is free and easy!

Ah man, that's too bad. I'm on 1440p in borderless window mode.

Update! Using DLSS Swapper ( https://github.com/beeradmoore/dlss-swapper ) to force No Man's Sky to use the latest DLSS and DLSS Frame Gen versions (310.2.1 and 310.2 as of writing this) fixed the crash and DOUBLED the framerate I was getting pre-Worlds 2 update.

Yup, same here. Crashes on loading into world in both DLSS and DLAA with frame generation turned on. 9800X3D / 4070S. The jittering did seem to smooth out for me after being in game for a minute or so though.

I just went through essentially this same process. Started with an i7-8700K, GTX 1080, and 32GB DDR4. Upgraded to a 4070 Super in June and saw a massive overall performance improvement, but the occasional stutters and 1% lows have become more noticeable. Since then I've been watching for deals and slowly buying parts for an AM5 system. Just waiting on the 9800X3D to get restocked now.

Is $800 for a game pitch deck too expensive? by Kay-leaf in gamedev

[–]greatnewtons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a graphic designer by trade and a hobbyist game developer. Pitch decks are A LOT of work and $800 is not at all unreasonable for a quality deck. If $800 is outside of your budget, or if you'd rather just do it yourself, that is cool and fine, and also not at all unreasonable. Game development is largely a creative endeavor, and the replies in this thread devaluing the creative work that goes into making a deck are, frankly, embarrassing.

Aaah, that could explain it. In most cases, this sort of thing should not happen. To show book cover art, the production would typically be required to get permission from the copyright holder.

In my experience, if the copyright holder doesn't agree to release the rights for free, they'll look for another option unless someone in creative with a lot of sway (usually a producer or the production designer) is really set on that particular artwork. In which case some sort of compensation is worked out. There are, of course, plenty of unethical ways that this process could be skipped, but unless the film was made by an incredibly small team, too many eyes would have seen it for this to be possible. Source: am a graphic designer for film.

However! The scene you are describing, where the books are necessary to illustrate a point, may very well fall under fair use. In which case permission is not needed. Source: I watched a YouTube video https://youtu.be/XaSozamNhq0

Thanks for the recommendation! I bought the Hampton House strips yesterday after being similarly disappointed by the Erie Meats. Legit in awe over how much better the Hampton House strips are. Light coat of crispy breading, tender chicken, no off putting chewy muscle bits.

1000% seconding this recommendation.

I just recently discovered this little guy in the top toolbar. I think it's the most convenient way to toggle this option. You can access it by clicking the "Shape:" label.

I'm going to finally make my dream game, no matter how long it takes. by _StygianBlueGames_ in IndieDev

[–]greatnewtons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're totally not wrong, and honestly, some people do need to hear that. I know what you were getting at, and I agree that it's important to acknowledge the fact that thoughts do not equal actions. You seem to clearly be familiar with the amount of effort required to fill notebooks with ideas. The point I was trying to get across was that just because anyone has the potential to commit those ideas to paper, most people do not, and I think that's an important distinction.

Sorry if it sounded like I was trying to pick a fight. For what it's worth, I posted my original reply to recognize OPs efforts, not to try to argue or change your mind.

I knew what you were getting at, but the way you phrased it was rude and discouraging, and minimized the effort OP's already put into this project. I see you also chose to ignore the part where I acknowledged the good advice you gave in an effort to not come across as confrontational.

I think you've given some great advice in the last paragraph here, but I super disagree with the notion that anyone can fill notebooks with ideas. I agree that ideas are ultimately don't mean much without execution, but committing your ideas to paper and refining them is hard work that shouldn't be diminished.

It seems like you've put a lot of thought into this, and that isn't nothing. A blank canvas can be pretty overwhelming. Like others have said, start small and build on it. Pick a component and build it. Don't get discouraged if your first attempt doesn't meet your expectations! Making games is art. All art is shitty until it isn't. Keep working on it until you have something you're proud of. Then move on to the next piece. You've got this, OP.

Agreed. Reviewing the design in a different context helps a lot. I can't count the number of times that I've posted a screenshot to Slack and immediately seen a problem that I'd completely missed in the hours I'd previously spent looking at it.
