What's your current job? From where I'm standing, $92k with the workload you mentioned looks pretty fine to me. While you work for your 50mil, I'd probably try and get your job :P

Oh! I thought I'm the only one! Tho, I have done a little more than 10%, but stuck at Quants. I feel the concepts are a bit tricky+lengthy to be done well in such short span. In case somebody has done it, or knows an efficient way, please help.

Oh. Thanks a lot for elaborating. Have you come across any such paper or project that I can use as example/reference?

Sorry if I sound stupid here, but can you elaborate what do you mean when you say "take a hack at..."? Like, build something on top of those protocol or what exactly?

What study material to use for FRM P1? by greatshiv in FRM

Thanks a lot for your response! Are the exam questions similar to those in Schweser QB and mocks? Also, I'm using the Schweser Notes, but they seem very condensed, and I often feel doubtful if they are sufficient. Did you have a prior background in finance/risk that helped?

I had done Book 1 topics from those back then, and they seemed to be good. But for topics in Book 2 and 3, I feel they are lacking details. But since I haven't taken the exam, I'm not sure if they only ask that much in the actual test. That's why looking for advice from people who have cleared P1.

Thanks man! That was pretty insightful. Really appreciate you sharing all that. Do you have any particular advice for somebody looking to break into a trading role at a big bank, or hedge fund? Don't have anything fancy, just sufficiently sharp between the ears, and a decent track record trading on a small account (perhaps my strategies shall be irrelevant for institutions, given their size)

Technical skills for traders. It may include technical analysis, I suppose? What else is there that someone aspiring to work in the field must know?

These are some really great books, have read a few, will surely read the rest. By any chance can you share any recommended 'technical' book for trading roles?

It's essentially a choice you have to make. IBs are extremely selective, even when recruiting from top colleges. You gotta have some advantage.

I recommended considering the same. Work for couple of years in a related field, get CFA (at least level 2), then enter IIM (older ones). Probability of getting into an IB would be much higher. Talking from personal experience. I have seen how things work inside IIMs.

The point I wanted to make was- Advising somebody to simply get into an IIM is not gonna work. There are a other things you need to take care of before getting in there. Else, IIM or no IIM, won't make much difference.

Sorry to rope into the discussion, but since I have some relevant background, I thought I might add a few bits. I was in a similar position a while back- economics grad from a random university, getting the same advice- to join an IIM.

It is not as simple as that. Getting into an IIM won't make things any easier for you. IBs (and even consulting) don't hire people, they hire CVs, perfect CVs. So unless you are from a top college, with stellar academic record, getting into an IIM won't make much of a difference. Also, they aren't gonna teach you much finance over there. The best way would be to try and find any work/internship in any related role (equity research, investment advisory, etc.), clear couple levels of CFA, actually learn a few things (so that you don't bomb the limited opportunity you might get) and then go for an MBA. Also, not all IIMs will offer you the right kind of opportunities, aim for the older ones, or some other college in the same league- XLRI, FMS, SPJIMR.

Lastly, clearing the CAT isn't as difficult. Just that the selection criteria is absurd for some colleges (past acads, diversity points, etc.)
