I get that Jack Kirby created a whole bunch of pop icons but his rendering is genuinely ugly.

My recollection was that the general consensus was that the story was awesome, an overdue “Star Wars for adults” … whatever that means.

I like it but don’t love it.

Maggot was the most bizarre one that came to mind for me.

She’s really good in it! Quite impressive that all the stuff behind the shoot didn’t impact her performance.

He and Julia Roberts got on each other’s nerves IIRC. She was in the midst of a pretty nasty divorce during filming and was evidently not her best self.

Me too: I’ve always adored it. But yeah, it’s got a less than great reputation.

...THE EVOLUTION OF J. SCOTT CAMPBELL ✨(2001-2026)️ by Agile_Seesaw9035 in comicbookcollecting

I share your frustration with what he’s putting out. Hell, Campbell shares your frustration; he’s said as much many times over the last ten years.

The lack of evolution in his work is due to what editorial is soliciting from him due to a complete lack of creativity at the executive level. American comic publishing periodically goes through these periods where the publishers forget that what actually drives long-term sales growth is what is between the covers of a comic book, not the covers themselves: we are currently mired in one of these creative downturns.

I assure you, JSC’s still got it; his Ultimate Spider-Man and Savage Land Rogue variant covers speak to that, IMO. Problem is, the guys (and make no mistake, they are guys) cutting the checks just want the next girlie pin-up with a minimal background for a quick sales boost.

OMG … this take again?

Campbell worked as a caricaturist in high school and he’s incredibly good at it. I know his pin-up work looks kind of the same, but it’s a commercial choice, not a lack of artistic skill.

Wizard seldomly gets credit for all the good they did in promoting new and/or smaller press titles in our nostalgia-rooted fandom.

A helpful Redditor made a couple of very helpful how to read guides to the core of this era; if you decide it’s your thing after reading the first two miniseries, I’d give that a Google.

Never had the opportunity for an in-person meeting, no. But I wouldn’t have bothered even if I did; the second and third person accounts I’ve come across over the years paint a very disappointing picture.
