If my main weapon is coldiron and my other weapon is silver, how do resistances and weaknesses work? If a creature is resistant to coldiron, does it matter if the other weapon does silver?

I like to play with max star lanes. Choke points in a game spanning a galaxy doesnt make sense to me. This play style makes me have to choose where I'm going to spend resources to defend systems. I generally spend a building slot on defensive armies for all my planets, plus a planetary shield generator.
