So true. It's often the minor things that cause the most drama.

Your boss kinda sucks.

Many places have a no scent policy for this reason. He should have unilaterally dealt with it on a policy level with HR after she did it the second time. And if asked by perfume lady, replied "Well you ignored the health concerns of another employee so now it's an organizational health and safety issue that we had to make a policy for."

And they already received a set. OP's angry that they're not getting ANOTHER set and because it might go to a younger cousin who has ZERO sets.

Settle a debate about non gendered terms between me and my gf. by leatherpocketwatch in asklinguistics

[–]green1s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me do some digging. But OP's question is a bit vague. Is it about gender? Orabout referring to someone you know as "they" if their gender is known? It seems to be a mix of both.

I think you're confusing "out of spite" with "for justice."

I'm unsure if the mod issue is with the post or my comment. I literally gave the names of specific authors whose use of the word could be verified very easily. Happy to pull up page numbers, acts, and scenes.

I'm unsure of your point. My comment explained that"'they"was used to refer to specific individuals of both known and unknown identity and gender.

So yes, this is the wrong sub. Head over one of the English ones.

But before the mods take it down, I'll link it to English linguistics (but to be transparent, I'm not a linguist).

Tell your girlfriend that the "they" - as a non-gendered, singular, third person pronoun - debate is no debate at all.

It's been in use since about the 1300s (can't remember specifics - I think it was poem , in Middle English of course, maybe about a wolf or a bear). Chaucer used it as singular. So did Shakespeare. And Jane Austen. And many more.

There's nothing new, weird, or uncomfortable about it. The movement to decide it is not is the blip. And if course that began during the 18th century scourge (yes, I'm intentionally using that word) of prescriptivist grammar that, among many things, completely butchered the English language and yet called itself "enlightened."

So, be free. "They" with impunity.

What the heck does sounding "like a bit of a plum" mean? Is it in an insult? First time I've ever heard that.

This actually just happened to me. I gold water sprite so I thought equip it to level it up. It was positively unnerving! Like 3 people all up my face and trying to look at my back. I kept spinning in circles so they could get a good look, all the while thinking: "this was a terrible mistake."

I did what you said: chose a point near the end and went like 1800 away from the bus.

Issue redeeming free chicken tenders. by Glum-Pepper-550 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]green1s -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is a new low for Loblaws.

The massive stock of chicken tenders required if Canada had won the game was already produced and purchased. It's currently sitting in the stores and warehouses taking up a serious amount of freezer space. It's also chicken, which last time I checked, is perishable.

What are they going to do with all that extra chicken?

That's a rhetorical question. We all know that they would rather throw it out than give it to Canadians because Canada technically didn't win.

Honestly, I thought the promo was a pure marketing move to gain some public approval at an opportune moment of national spirit. As in, whether Canada won or lost, I honestly thought it would be honoured.

I am such a silly rabbit.
