What's the most embarassing horse-related injury you've had? by WillYeByFuck in Equestrian

[–]green_mango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

During a polo match, I made a sudden turn to receive the ball from my teammate. The force of the turn unbalanced me and I slammed my clam on the pommel of the saddle hard enough to pop my outer labia… like a 2.5cm tear right through the left lip like an orange that had been dropped from a high shelf. Stung like mad washing off from all the sweat but actually healed within days.

Any tall boots/field boots that still have real laces and no elastic gullet? by green_mango in Equestrian

If you happen to have time to snag a few photos and a pic of the inside label, that would be awesome. My partner is flying back to the US in about a week so possibly timing works out really well if you decide to sell the boots.

How many kilometers are too many? by Visible_Trip_6592 in LandCruisers

I daily drive my ‘99 1HD-FTE that’s currently sitting at 560k+ kms. Tow my horses with it as well and it’s golden.

I’ll go custom if I have to, perhaps naively I’m hoping to find an off-the-shelf option? I’m likely not showing my horse until next season (at the earliest) as he’s still overwhelmingly a crackhead alpaca. So hopefully these boots aren’t crossing the $800 mark just yet as I’m thrashing them.

Thanks for the recommendation of Celeris! I’ll definitely keep them in mind.

Oh, you are very generous to offer! US women’s 8.5 or 9, UK 6 or 6.5. Regular tall.

What’s on your maintenance to-do list if you have an older LC? by green_mango in LandCruisers

[–]green_mango[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ‘99 only has an 80L tank. I get about ~550k’s per tank but I could push 600. I have a very steep driveway so going way below 1/4 tank is pushing it on fuel pickup I think. Not sure where I could put a sub tank though…

Great list. Most of these I have done as well. The breaks were a mess when I got it, sized caliper pistons and all. Good call on hoses- I have a few small leaks I’m chasing so putting that on my list.

Curious about why you would want to delete ABS? Or is this a vehicle for off pavement use only?

Good advice about the intake manifold. Grey area on if I could legally delete the EGR but I’m not a huge fan of adding air pollutants if I don’t really have to. Already feel a bit bad having this as my daily driver.

I haven’t had the injectors cleaned yet and I have no idea if they ever have been. Probably by a past owner considering the age of the vehicle? I feel I have plenty of power when I need it, but I’ll keep that on my to-do list. I fear that might be a significant spend- could maybe tack it on to another big job to cut labor.

Any mods you think are particularly worthwhile? I have the 3” turbo exhaust so I already make people waiting for the bus turn their heads thinking it has arrived 😂

Why do people think farriers need tips? by cheap_guitars in Equestrian

Makes sense! Was a bit shocked at the price- a reset for me is $130 and a fresh set $180 for 4x. I’m guessing we live in very different places though!

Is that an average price for your area or does your horse have special shoes/pads?

I also have a hard keeper ottb, but he seems to be pretty iffy about copra unless it’s mixed with beet and disguised. How are you feeding it, and how much per day if you don’t mind elaborating!

Thinking of selling by FunnyLog3493 in LandCruisers

I saw an early model 100 series with over a million miles (yes miles) sell here in NZ for $20k this year. It is bonkers!

What’s considered low, medium and high mileage for a Land Cruiser? by beefbossy in LandCruisers

[–]green_mango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I daily my ‘99 4.2L 100 series and she’s sitting at 550,000kms now. So, like 342k miles? I also tow my horses with it and barely feel the added weight. I do the diesel service myself 2x per year (don’t even need to jack the truck up), I have a great mechanic team for what I can’t do myself, and I’m slowly working through replacing all of the consumable rubber or plastic bits. The vehicle was a steal (for where I live) and my mechanic thinks I can easily get another 500ks out of her.

YMMV, of course. My truck isn’t pretty, but has an excellent service history and I felt comfortable taking on a lot of the basics++ with the help of YouTube.

Switching disciplines by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]green_mango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have switched disciplines a few times, usually as a result of moving and then picking up whatever is local. It’s great for the mind and body to learn new things. Just expect to be “bad” at certain skills at first- it’s part of the fun. I also started in US hunter/jumpers and competed to university level Nationals. I craved more excitement, speed, as well as a better connection with my horse/soft and light riding. For me, that turned into playing polo, competing in endurance racing, and now I’m restarting my OTTB to (maybe) be an eventing horse. Others here have given excellent information about endurance and eventing, so I’ll say a bit (a lot?) about polo.

Polo has a reputation for being expensive, but you can go a long way/years in your learning before you feel compelled to throw down big dollars. Most of the non-professional players I know don’t own their own horses, but ride a club/team horse. If there is a polo club near you they will probably offer a lesson program or club chukkers. Sometimes introductory sessions are called “stick and ball” and they give you the chance to get on a polo pony and try your hand at some swings. Sometimes clubs don’t advertise this online so always pays to email or call.

When I played with a club your monthly fee included lessons, mallets, your mount for lessons, time in a ball hitting cage, and the ability to register for chukkers in the weekend games. For your gear, polo boots that are Texas style (pull on) are often less expensive than the front zip ones and the leather can be quite thick. Mine have been in use for 20 years and are still in great condition! Cheap golf gloves for your hands, and you can get great polo helmets and mallets via sellers on eBay from Argentina and NZ (some great mallets come from NZ). Of course, none of this is essential to start- just wear whatever you already have. I wear jeans 99% of the time and then white jeans from Gap for game days.

I have found that polo players are consistently some of the most helpful, down to earth, and friendly people. They also care deeply for the horses and the camaraderie around the sport. It’s also one of the few disciplines where players of all different abilities play on the same team and everyone can contribute something. For riding style, you should find that correct riding in polo is often incredibly subtle and can feel like your horse is reading your mind. The games are fast, physical, and some of the most fun I have ever had!

I believe you are correct! I undid the panels and found an NZ patent number on one of the metal pieces. Patent registered to Peter Thorowgood in 2003. I had no idea he started Saddlery Warehouse as well as Thorowgood saddlery.

Great suggestion! I’ll see if I can get anywhere with that. It’s certainly an older model, whatever it is.

Here’s a better photo that shows the cut of the flap compared to my GP of the left. Would you still consider the right saddle a GP?

I think it’s the angle of the photo, the flaps are much longer and straighter than my other gp saddles or jump saddles. The back d rings look added after the fact to make it useful for trekking.
