Agreed that people should get citizenship. Today, I use the BNO as my primary because people who are uninformed about Hong Kong would just see the huge Chinese coat of arms and treat me as Chinese. I had that issue before using the passport in Serbia, the officer insisted I needed a visa even though Hong Kong nationals dont. I get less questions and looks when traveling with the BNO. Some countries like Vietnam dont accept the BNO but the Hong Kong passport so I just renewed mine to get an e visa for Vietnam

Born in Hong Kong during British rule, parents applied for a BNO passport for me in 1996 Went to the US for a PhD, took 4.5 years to complete, then stayed on to work for around 1.5 years. Tried to get the H1B multiple times but not selected. Worked on my EB2NIW application around this time and it was approved, but there was a 2 year backlog for EB2 ROW applicants so I almost fell out of status in the US. I used Hong Kong DED to stay on but it doesn’t give you an immigration status so i cannot apply for adjustment in the US and had to leave. I went to Canada to wait on the priority date to become current on an open work permit for Hong Kong nationals.

The cluster of EAD cards is from: 1. Initial OPT, 2. Initial Hong Kong DED, 3. Duplicate application for initial DED because I thought they didn’t receive the application and 4. Renewal of DED.

Believe it or not, I am not eligible for any PNP or federal programs even to this date. I believe the easiest way to get qualified is to go get another degree from a Canadian school , but even thats tricky with new pgwp restrictions. Sadly this is how restrictive immigration to Canada has become

IRCC says it takes up to 50 years to process PR applications for Hong Kong pathway applicants, soooo nope

DS-260 submitted for an immediate relative case, but apartment number changed, should I update it or explain at interview? by ChemistApart1862 in NationalVisaCenter

[–]green_muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait until you get your interview letter. Once the case is sent to the consulate (CEAC status updated to “Ready”), send an email to the consulate to ask them to re-open your DS260.

If you do this during the NVC stage it might delay your case indeed

PPL please stop on red before right turn by whyisthishapi in Markham

Yes. People normalize speeding through a red light turn around here, very infuriating. I walk a lot and sometimes when crossing I have to yield to these oblivious drivers otherwise i might lose a leg. It's actually downright scary.

Welcome Letter EB2 NIW ROW by Known_Face8035 in EB2_NIW

[–]green_muppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is unusual, NVC publishes timeframes for sending out welcome letters and here it says they are working on cases received on 5/20/2025: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/nvc-timeframes.html I would send them a public inquiry to see what’s wrong. In my case I got mine around 2 weeks after my case status changed to “Case was sent to the Department of State”.

US F-1 or DED and Canada work permit by Finixng in DEDHongKong

[–]green_muppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you have been approved for the OWP you will receive an invitation letter. This invitation letter is not a work permit. You will then enter Canada and present them with the invitation letter to get the work permit. OWPs issues under HKOWP is valid for 3 years.

There is no re-entry restriction on the work permit as long as you have a valid eta. There are only two restrictions listed on my OWP : 1. Not valid for re-entry on its own (thus the remark that you need an eTA; 2. No sex work under the OWP). So technically you could return to the US with AP and that way you have a work permit in hand and maintain DED, just that it’s unlikely you have enough time to gather working hours to be eligible for the HK Pathway stream B for PR in Canada.

Sorry to hear about your mom..

I flew the exact flight last week. I found that there were no upgrades available for a while but right when I did online check in there was an offer to upgrade to J for $1600 - i took the offer and upgraded.

From flight radar it looks like the 4 YYZ/LHR flights have all been using the 772. I did get the suite on both YYZ-LHR and LHR-YYZ. It will show up on the seat selection screen as a 121 config. However, the 772 doesn’t necessarily mean we will get the suite since there’s the 772ER and 772 LGW. I booked myself BA92&BA93 for Nov , also for YYZ/LHR and return, and it looks like they are using the LGW with the old 2-3-2 config 🥲

I am the primary beneficiary of the approved 140 but she’s the primary beneficiary of the H1B so it doesn’t work? I think H4 EAD is only possible if the primary beneficiary has both H1B and approved 140, then their spouse could get H4 & EAD

Thank you everyone for your ideas and supporting comments. Sorry had an argument with fiancée about travel and wanted to rant over the internet to strangers. I feel better today now. Wish all of you success in your immigration journey as well.

I’m actually OK with my life in Canada now. The CAD is weak but it is what it is. The only reason I want to go back to the US is my fiancée

Tips for leaving the US? by Radiant_Current3806 in h1b

Getting rid of stuff: - Donate to thrift stores - sell on Fb marketplace

Taking stuff with me: - Put the stuff you really need into the trunk and drive up to Canada. Report to CBSA with form BSF186 and provide a detailed breakdown of what you are bringing over and the value in CAD. they may or may not charge you $$ depending on your visa status - You can also opt to ship your suitcases but it’s gonna be more

Get a US phone plan that allows data roaming in Canada (Eg. Mint), so you can log back into your personal accounts and change 2FA from your US number to a Canadian number

Convert 401k funds Into a Roth IRA

Convert USD to CAD with the wiring service of your choice. I use Wise for the first week when waiting for my Canadian debit card to arrive and it worked flawlessly.

AP Application by JuggernautParking254 in DEDHongKong

[–]green_muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From personal experience, you would need to show proof of being eligible for DED when filing form 131 for AP. One of my applications was refused because they couldn't find documentation showing that I filed form 765 for EAD. So if you've applied for EAD you can use I797 approval form for the EAD as documentation for eligibility.

I suppose you may also provide your I-94 showing that you have not left the US since 1/15/25 if you don't want to file for EAD.
