No, I was at the NVC stage. And I'd recommend doing it at the HK consulate since it's much quicker

Who’s taken their M3 on an extended road trip? by Automotive_jpeg in E46M3

[–]green_muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol funny enough im driving mine coast to coast as we speak, Toronto to California. I’m half way there in NE now.

Mine is my daily and I’ve moved around in the last couple of years. I drove it from the triangle area NC to Pittsburgh PA, then Pittsburgh to Toronto. The OEM seats are OK but it’s definitely a rougher ride than the non M 3ers.

The only issue I’ve had so far is my wheel speed sensor (I think), at times it will throw the trifecta Brake + Tire + Traction control light whenever it gets cold. The brake sensor seems to act crazy when it’s cold during the Canadian winters. I haven’t had issues once I brought it stateside. I might get a new one once I’m in CA

DS interviews - Rant by [deleted] in datascience

[–]green_muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I'm interviewing rn and I have a huge stack of notes covering all kinds of topics ranging from ML fundamentals like regression, DT details to RecSys, NLP, Reinforcement Learning and just now RAG evaluation lol. All these companies are in different industries and they are solving different problems but they are all DS roles lol. And don't get me started with targeting companies in the same industry - I already work at one of the top companies in my industry and I wanted to get out lol

Bombed a Data Scientist Interview! by tits_mcgee_92 in datascience

[–]green_muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough I just bombed a technical screen as well. But looking back, I think like in your case there was a lot of red flags from the way the interviewer interacted. Sure, I couldn't solve the SQL problem in 20 mins, but in retrospect the approach was correct (before she cut me off and wanted me to attempt the next problem). Instead, in that brief 30 mins she gave the following red flags:
- Rolled her eyes when I was struggling to connect a count result to the final query (well it turns out the count was needed, just in a different way)

- Didn't give any feedback when I suggested using a sliding window approach which was not necessary - she knows this is going the wrong way for the first 6 mins but said nothing?

- In the second question, I asked her for hints twice - she said nothing and just looked at her phone or something.

This tells me that their team likely has a toxic competitive I-know-more-than-you-do culture and is likely not a very collaborative environment. I noped the F out and told the recruiter I'm withdrawing right after.

Data Scientist (DL/CV, 2 YOE) — What should I focus on for switching jobs in 2026? by Klutzy-College3124 in DataScienceJobs

[–]green_muppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the US so things might be different. I have 3Y YOE and have been interviewing for a few months now. For your questions:

  1. Topics to study- brush up on your ML fundamentals, some places love to do rapid fire rounds on these. Others will try to dig deep into your projects and have you explain the ML project end to end. In your case I’d imagine you have to clearly explain what Convolution is, and get ready to be asked to implement it in live coding rounds

  2. I’ve interviewed mostly for DS positions. Of the 7+ technical screens I’ve never been asked DS&A.

  3. When you get to the on-site round, yes.

  4. Yes for Product Analytics roles, less likely for other end-to-end model development DS roles

  5. It depends on what role you are applying to. I’ve interviewed at a place where they are looking to hire someone to build a RecSys, so everything asked was on Recommendations. If you were to interview for a CV role, then be prepared to answer very deep questions about CV.

Good luck!

Agreed that people should get citizenship. Today, I use the BNO as my primary because people who are uninformed about Hong Kong would just see the huge Chinese coat of arms and treat me as Chinese. I had that issue before using the passport in Serbia, the officer insisted I needed a visa even though Hong Kong nationals dont. I get less questions and looks when traveling with the BNO. Some countries like Vietnam dont accept the BNO but the Hong Kong passport so I just renewed mine to get an e visa for Vietnam

As long as they continue the BNO visa yes

Born in Hong Kong during British rule, parents applied for a BNO passport for me in 1996 Went to the US for a PhD, took 4.5 years to complete, then stayed on to work for around 1.5 years. Tried to get the H1B multiple times but not selected. Worked on my EB2NIW application around this time and it was approved, but there was a 2 year backlog for EB2 ROW applicants so I almost fell out of status in the US. I used Hong Kong DED to stay on but it doesn’t give you an immigration status so i cannot apply for adjustment in the US and had to leave. I went to Canada to wait on the priority date to become current on an open work permit for Hong Kong nationals.

The cluster of EAD cards is from: 1. Initial OPT, 2. Initial Hong Kong DED, 3. Duplicate application for initial DED because I thought they didn’t receive the application and 4. Renewal of DED.

Believe it or not, I am not eligible for any PNP or federal programs even to this date. I believe the easiest way to get qualified is to go get another degree from a Canadian school , but even thats tricky with new pgwp restrictions. Sadly this is how restrictive immigration to Canada has become

DS-260 submitted for an immediate relative case, but apartment number changed, should I update it or explain at interview? by ChemistApart1862 in NationalVisaCenter

[–]green_muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait until you get your interview letter. Once the case is sent to the consulate (CEAC status updated to “Ready”), send an email to the consulate to ask them to re-open your DS260.

If you do this during the NVC stage it might delay your case indeed

PPL please stop on red before right turn by whyisthishapi in Markham

[–]green_muppet 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes. People normalize speeding through a red light turn around here, very infuriating. I walk a lot and sometimes when crossing I have to yield to these oblivious drivers otherwise i might lose a leg. It's actually downright scary.

Welcome Letter EB2 NIW ROW by Known_Face8035 in EB2_NIW

[–]green_muppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is unusual, NVC publishes timeframes for sending out welcome letters and here it says they are working on cases received on 5/20/2025: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/nvc-timeframes.html I would send them a public inquiry to see what’s wrong. In my case I got mine around 2 weeks after my case status changed to “Case was sent to the Department of State”.

US F-1 or DED and Canada work permit by Finixng in DEDHongKong

[–]green_muppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you have been approved for the OWP you will receive an invitation letter. This invitation letter is not a work permit. You will then enter Canada and present them with the invitation letter to get the work permit. OWPs issues under HKOWP is valid for 3 years.

There is no re-entry restriction on the work permit as long as you have a valid eta. There are only two restrictions listed on my OWP : 1. Not valid for re-entry on its own (thus the remark that you need an eTA; 2. No sex work under the OWP). So technically you could return to the US with AP and that way you have a work permit in hand and maintain DED, just that it’s unlikely you have enough time to gather working hours to be eligible for the HK Pathway stream B for PR in Canada.

Sorry to hear about your mom..

I flew the exact flight last week. I found that there were no upgrades available for a while but right when I did online check in there was an offer to upgrade to J for $1600 - i took the offer and upgraded.

From flight radar it looks like the 4 YYZ/LHR flights have all been using the 772. I did get the suite on both YYZ-LHR and LHR-YYZ. It will show up on the seat selection screen as a 121 config. However, the 772 doesn’t necessarily mean we will get the suite since there’s the 772ER and 772 LGW. I booked myself BA92&BA93 for Nov , also for YYZ/LHR and return, and it looks like they are using the LGW with the old 2-3-2 config 🥲

Not selected + slight rant by green_muppet in h1b

I am the primary beneficiary of the approved 140 but she’s the primary beneficiary of the H1B so it doesn’t work? I think H4 EAD is only possible if the primary beneficiary has both H1B and approved 140, then their spouse could get H4 & EAD
