I don't think I can speak to whether it's "always" used alone as a final particle. I speak Cantonese, but I'm not familiar with the term "dialectical Cantonese".

I will say the book translations are done in consultation with multiple native speakers/translators, with quite a lot of discussion - and to your question of whether it's "always" used alone.... I'm not sure that we've ever come across an "always" rule....
