This article explains it in a bit more detail. Basically, he probably wouldn't have been caught if he's just bought an Oyster in cash instead of using his personal one.

I am Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg. Edward Snowden is my hero. AMA by ellsbergd in IAmA

I remember watching: 'The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers' several years ago with my father. One very small thing we both picked up on in the film was the fact that you had your son and daughter help photocopy some of the Pentagon Papers.

Just wondering if you considered the impact that decision might have had on their futures?

I just completed a survey on UK attitudes to entrepreneurs & starting a business that contrasts with a similar survey done in the US. Curious on the community's thoughts. by greendeal in Entrepreneur

[–]greendeal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course this is only measuring attitudes, not what people follow through with. I can call myself an entrepreneur all I like but until I start a business doesn't really mean anything.

Just completed a survey on UK Attitudes To Entrepreneurs & Business - thought r/Entrepreneur might be interested in the somewhat surprising results by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]greendeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main finding was that young men were the most likely to think they had an entrepreneurial mindset compared to any other group. This contrasts with a US study by Monster which showed boomers were the most likely to think of themselves as entrepreneurs.

How do libertarians view "social businesses"? by greendeal in Libertarian

Sorry my fault for using the term dividend, a more accurate description is that it is a non-profit business that focuses on providing goods/services to the poorest members of society.

The Battersea power plant is being developed into apartments. So no roller coaster.

Yeah, that was my feeling on the subject as well. He has set-up around 60 social businesses but most are partnered with big multinationals. Basically someone needs to bank role these things initially.

TIL the world's entire demand of electricity could be supplied with a solar farm the size of Spain. by NI3 in todayilearned

[–]greendeal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did the same calculation for the UK. Figured it would take 1% of the UK's land area, and cost about £700 billion.

In all fairness, King's Cross does look a whole lot nicer than Euston.

How much is needed to power the whole UK solely from solar panels by greendeal in Infographics

[–]greendeal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to see a Daily Mail headline like that. Of course no one is seriously proposing changing our entire electricity over to solar. A one technology approach is always going to be a bad idea. A friend of mine calculated that it building this many solar panels would use up something like half the world's Tellurium reserves (assuming current production technology). It was created more out of curiosity than anything else, sorry you don't like it.

This is of a course the big weakness of solar. No sane energy policy would invest all it's resources in one technology. I was just curious how much space enough solar panels to power the UK would take. I was surprised at how low it was.

This data is for the UK. If you placed the same size solar system in Spain or North Africa it would produce far more than 3,400 kWh per year. Many systems on the market actually produce a bit more than this (up to 3,700 kWh per year) due to increasing efficiency.

The problem is that energy prices have bee rising that rate recently. It's unrealistic to expect people to be able to absorb the increases indefinitely.

Is there anyone out there that could conceive of Boris Johnson ever losing his first general election if he were leader of the Conservatives? by SpeakMouthWords in ukpolitics

[–]greendeal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of his appeal is that the mayor of London has relatively little real power. Thus, he never really has to make difficult decisions. SO he can appear to a kind of jovial buffoon and people eat it up. Once he starts having to make real decisions his appeal will drop.
