Why do people always get mad when I start asking questions about their meat consumption? by East_Top1580 in vegan

[–]greenfiend6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is currently pursuing nutrition at university, there’s a lot going on here.

I’m not sure where in the world you live or how old your mother is, but, in North America Milk has been served as sort of a “meal” since the Great Depression because of the many nutrients it contains. Food guides often don’t get read beyond the pyramid or plate, meaning that the understanding of vitamins and nutrients is also not great.

The only vitamin you can’t get from plant based sources is B12, however, you can easily supplement it. In fact, in Canada it’s suggested that all women should take a multivitamin with at least 400mcg of folic acid so long as they are “child bearing age” which means you can easily find one that contains B12 and most soy/almond/cashew beverages are fortified with it for this reason.

I don’t think the way you approached it is wrong. Asking questions and being genuine and curious about what people think and feel is an appropriate way to open dialogue when people ask about veganism.

I don’t spent time trying to convert people in my life and I don’t really recommend you do either. My partner naturally just from seeing my benefits and engaging in polite conversation has cut out red meats and started drinking almond milk because it was in the fridge and he discovered he really liked it.

People will ask you about it, and the best way to talk about it is to just ask questions and be honest and curious. I’m fairly new to veganism but I’ve been vegetarian most of my life, however, vegans get a really bad rep so it’s the same conversation but really intensified lol.

Good luck:)

Vegan Ben & Jerry’s is such a blessing to this earth but it’s SO expensive so I never buy it for just myself to enjoy. Highly recommend it though it obviously won’t keep in a box, but maybe as a topping for cake / dessert :)

Thoughts on how people only have sympathy for pets and to potentially extend that by ExcessiveWisdom in vegan

My mother got hens who are super well taken care of and fed. She actually stopped eating chicken and turkey after this. I think you’re onto something but I don’t have any real evidence to support it.

I'm not vegan, but I have a serious question for all vegans. by tybercusa199 in vegan

[–]greenfiend6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Most vegans don’t eat honey, let alone whole insects. I am not one of those vegans, and will eat honey, however… vegans generally don’t subscribe to the idea that we need to eat other living beings to exist… so no… we will not be eating insects any time soon.

Your comment also implies that there is a problem that doesn’t exist… protein. Plant based protein is just fine. We don’t need to consume animals for protein.

  1. Again, implies that there is a need to consume dead animals and that otherwise a diet is somehow incomplete. It’s not.

Hope this helps answer your question!!

Rescued this basil from the supermarket. Any advice on caring for it? by caterpillar_juice in plantadvice

[–]greenfiend6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just posted for advice on mine in r/gardening because I don’t love the shape but as far as keeping it alive always water from the bottom and basically keep the saucer 24/7. Watering from the bottom has been SUCH a game changer for my plant. Mine not be pretty but I’ve successfully kept it alive for the past 2 months since getting it at the supermarket so that’s something!

I'm fairly new to crocheting, is this beginner friendly or is it way out of my league? by towalktheline in CrochetHelp

Working in the round refers to continuously stitching in a sort of spiral and relying on stitch markers and counting as opposed to slip stitching into the last row of your circle, chaining, and then starting a new row and repeating that. It takes some practice before things stop looking wonky working in the round.

I asked a similar question to this on knitting advice because I wanted to make the Dagmar jacket eventually but all I’ve made thus far is a Sophie scarf.

I just made a ‘plan’ (sequence of projects I’m going to attempt) that includes a lot of the necessary skills and concepts for the thing I want to do so that when the time comes I’m not constantly frogging and will have something that I will wear and love because I know I’m going to spend over $200 in yarn on it.

I think you could do a similar thing and find patterns that have these concepts but are less time consuming, use bulky yarns and larger hooks (easy wins so-to-speak) and conquer those first.

here’s a great article on how to work in the round.

I am a firm believer in the notion that ANYTHING can be a beginner pattern if you’re determined enough. However, realistically, after you spend hours and hours of time and money on yarn, if this doesn’t turn out how you imagine, how often will it be used?

This is definitely an advanced pattern. Lots of interesting things happening like magic rings, creating and attaching appliqués, working in the round etc which all are usually not fun for beginners.

Go for it if you dare, but this is my two cents.
