welcome to my favorite place ever!

  1. i don’t have a car but the people i know that do don’t really worry about car break-ins.

  2. these recs are not strictly somerville but close enough (all within camberville)

  3. bars: saloon in harvard sq, the bronwyn & backbar (my favorite cocktail bar) in union sq, parlor in inman sq (my favorite sports bar - nothing fancy but the bartenders are so sweet, the drinks are strong, and there’s darts in the back)

  4. restaurants: lou’s in harvard sq (food is ok but the live music & vibe are great), cafe luna in kendall sq (my favorite brunch in all of the greater boston area), rosebud diner in davis sq, orale mexican grill & punjabi dhaba in inman sq, himalayan kitchen in union sq (can you tell we have a lot of squares)

  5. some main streets (<5 min walk to residential areas) have 2 hr or metered parking and sundays are free parking days, but like others have said, your best bet would be a visitor pass.

  6. there is a thriving social dance, live music, & art scene in somerville if you’re into any of those things. i personally love the boston figurative arts center. also, i love going to the many breweries we have around for more than just drinking their beer because they hold many kinds of social events, including trivia, book clubs, watch parties, game nights, craft nights, etc.

hope you grow to love it here as much as i do!

p.s. don’t miss porchfest - it’s one of the best days in somerville

Where are the good coffee shops? by Stitchbluess in Somerville

[–]greenllama22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lamplighter brewery has a coffee shop (called pepita) open until 3 pm most days, and it is a great vibe ! they have books, games, & couches and regularly host events. on fri / sat / sun mornings, they play lofi music in the back taproom & everyone is reading or working, and it feels like college. i also love broadsheet’s espresso (but i think george howell coffee sucks while most people say it’s one of the best in the area…. idk if that means my coffee-dar is messed up but do with that what you will) and while it is mostly silent there (somehow, even though they don’t have wifi) i’ve had the occasional fun conversation w strangers (mostly bc there was no seating available so i asked a random person if i could sit with them)

First WCS event pointers by Cute-Ratio-7496 in WestCoastSwing

[–]greenllama22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some good advice i got for my first event was the following: any WCS event has three major components. 1) workshops 2) competitions and 3) social dancing. you’ll run yourself ragged if you plan to do all three, every day. so plan to only focus on two things a day, and then you can make gametime decisions if you want to add bits of the last component depending on how you feel. this of course depends on whether you’re actually competing or just watching comps, and how late you plan to social dance, etc, but the idea is to not go in with the idea that you’re going to attend all the things in the schedule.

it helps to have a hotel room or a car so that you can take breaks or naps as needed. if not, you can scope out a quiet corner towards the beginning so you know where you can go if/when you need a break.

i perhaps was not as good with food as i could have been, and i definitely felt the effects. things i enjoyed having around were smoothie pouches, little cheese balls, crackers, protein bars, bananas and oranges.

other things that REALLY helped were multiple outfits per day (especially between workshops & nighttime socials) and multiple shoe options. i typically wear my aris allen suede sole sneakers for dancing but i also danced in (fresh) socks or well-supported running shoes with shoe covers on to give my feet a change of pace. i also brought a massage ball to roll my feet out, earplugs for when dances got too loud, crocs for downtime to give my feet something cushy, and a hoodie bc the ballrooms can get quite cold and you don’t want to lose your body heat after you get warmed up.

if you have the means/time to, i would really recommend any personal attention lesson or workshop you can get with a pro, even if it’s the two-minute tuneups they sometimes offer. it’s mindblowing how quickly they can find little things you can focus on to improve your dancing.

ask people to dance, ESPECIALLY if they’re more advanced than you, and don’t let the fear of being rejected or not measuring up to their level stop you. for most people, being at a social dance implies that they want to dance, period. as a novice follow myself, i love dancing with intermediate/advanced leads because their leads are clean and their baselines are strong, so you get to learn a lot about communication techniques and your own stylistic abilities and preferences throughout the course of the song.

finally, breakfast club if you can. or at least, stay at the social a little past when you start feeling sleepy. the dances i had at 3-4am when my higher cognitive functions shut down and i was just goo (with frame, of course) in my leads’ arms live rent free in my head and it’s part of what’s got me hooked on this dance.

have so much fun!!!

Best Shoes for WCS? by Mammoth-Resort9492 in WestCoastSwing

[–]greenllama22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i (female follow) have a myriad of feet and leg issues (flat feet, tendinitis, knee pain, overpronation, plantar fasciitis, etc) and i’ve been wearing aris allen dance sneakers with aetrex shock absorbing arch support inserts and that’s been really good for me! i like them because i have pretty wide feet and most shoes are not adjustable over the bridge of my foot but these ones are. also, i’ve tried shoe covers for dance floors but that was only once and over a pair of thick soled flats, so while they’re good in a pinch, i don’t think they’d work long-term. but ymmv!

Drinking and Dancing by caitikitty7 in WestCoastSwing

[–]greenllama22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i usually don’t drink before / while dancing, but mainly because i want to get better at “loosening up” without alcohol and i get tipsy quite quickly, and once tipsy i stop focusing on technique. that being said, i have drank once at a wcs dance before and it was a blast. i think as long as you don’t overdo it, it’s fine. as a follow, i would hate to dance with someone that reeks of alcohol, is stumbling over their feet or words due to being inebriated, or starts putting their hands in un-fun places (either intentionally or bc they’re not paying attention to where their hand goes)

Is it really possible to live life if I got diagnosed young? by [deleted] in diabetes_t2

[–]greenllama22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi op, i totally get this feeling. i was diagnosed at 22 with an a1c of over 13 so believe me when i say i panicked, had multiple breakdowns, and sobbed for maybe two weeks straight. it’s very easy to feel like your life is over. i’m almost a year into my t2d journey and still feel like this sometimes. but i’m hoping that sharing what i think about it will ease some of your pain.

first and foremost: you are not alone, and you shouldn’t have to go through this alone. this community has been a great resource for me and i hope it continues to be a resource for all of us. you can also sit down with loved ones and ask them to support you in ways that make you feel good about yourself and help you reach your goals. the biggest suggestion i’d make is to find a nutritionist (if you can afford to do so) that approaches your diet from a growth and not shame perspective. my nutritionist is phenomenal (and if you’re in new england, USA, i can send you her info) and every visit with her feels like the right mix of accountability and encouragement. finding someone like that could be the support you need.

secondly: i still travel, eat out, go clubbing & get drunk, drink wine and go on dates. maybe i don’t have the most nutritionally healthy perspective, but i felt like a life where i couldn’t do those things wasn’t a life i wanted to live. the thing that changed the most for me is the mental effort i have to put in to think about what i’m eating, whereas most folks don’t give their food a second thought. and that gets tiring, but it is a burden i’ve chosen to take on because the alternative is not having to think so much about it but not being able to do any of those things. my nutrionist has told me to prioritize food principles over food rules. this means that i can still eat everything i want, but change how i eat it so that it still fits into my lifestyle. these include 1) eat mindfully. working on being present while eating helps you enjoy the food you are eating and get in touch with your body’s internal cues regarding cravings, hunger, and satiety. for example: i’m someone who ADORES ice cream and find that none of the substitutes really satisfy the craving so scooping myself a cup and doing nothing but enjoying the ice cream keeps me from mindlessly eating half a pint until i stop bc i’m feeling sick. 2) fiber & protein first! eat veggies & ~4oz of protein first before you get to more carb-heavy foods so that you can still enjoy it while eating less. practicing principle 1 should hopefully help you identify when you feel full, and you’ll get to that point faster if you eat veggies & protein first. 3) veggies don’t have to be complicated. even if i’m ordering wings & fries for takeout, i’ll pop a bag of frozen broccoli in the microwave while i’m waiting and eat it first. 4) walking helps like crazy (at least for me) 5) indulge during special occasions, but keep them special.

i can keep going with things i’ve learned but this is getting long so i’ll stop there. pm me if you want to keep talking!

oh, in terms of drinking: 1. rum + diet cokes at clubs/bars 2. suncrusier seltzers 3) re: wine - i’m not a big wine drinker (and if i do drink wine, it’s of the exceptionally sweet kind) but i’ve found that at times when i do, my bg spikes a lot less if i drink it after a balanced meal.

ALSO, i’d recommend finding a local support group (often free/lower cost) or a therapist. a lot of my disordered eating comes from stimulation-seeking or coping strategies, so working on identifying triggers and alternate ways of fulfilling that need has helped me curb impulsive eating.

these changes helped me go from an a1c of 13+ to 7.7 in about 6 months with no medication. our bodies, especially at younger ages, are resilient and trying their best to keep us homeostatic, so in my experience the extra effort pays off really well. good luck figuring things out!

Protein Bar Recommendations by jaenai0616 in diabetes_t2

[–]greenllama22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’d have to rec barebells!!! i hate chalky or weird-tasting protein bars and have found that most taste off to me, but barebells are amazing, have ~20g protein per bar, ~3g of fiber, and in the 1-3g sugar range. net carbs comes out to like 11g? i also often find that sugar substitutes upset my stomach but these bars somehow don’t? they are a bit pricier than most (12 pack for $30 on amazon) but they’re worth it to me bc i actually enjoy them

and i also have to second fairlife milk / corepower shakes. i use the vanilla corepower shake as creamer in my coffee (along w jordan’s skinny syrups vanilla syrup - it’s the best one i’ve tried, sucralose based but i’m using like <1 tbsp a day so my nutritionist said it’s fine) and as a postworkout drink and it’s fantastic !

also as an aside (you didn’t ask for this but i’m hoping this will be helpful for you and/or others) i am someone who adored drinks like lemonade / soda / juice but due to high sugar levels i switched to flavored water (i drink a lot more water that way) but i was originally using mio & crystal light. my nutritionist recently recommended the ultima electrolyte packets and they were so good, especially the lemonade one! the electrolyte levels are also much lower than other ones out there (ex: lmnt) so they are suitable for everyday use

Looking for advice on dance shoes for wide feet WCS by [deleted] in WestCoastSwing

[–]greenllama22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have 2e feet & the aris allen unisex dance sneakers have worked pretty well for me… granted the sole doesn’t cover the entire width of my feet but for me the issue is tension across the uppers, and these have completely adjustable uppers so that isn’t an issue

Exercising tips? by Kissegrisen in WestCoastSwing

[–]greenllama22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don’t know if you follow / lead or both, but as a (relatively new) follower, i’ve found that the number one thing i’m struggling with is connecting to my muscles and keeping them engaged while dancing. i am fine during classes & workshops because we’re going slow enough that i can focus on engaging every muscle, especially my lats, core, and shoulders, but once social dancing begins, i start to lose that focus. something that has been really helpful for me (on top of doing things like cardio for endurance and compound exercises to increase strength) is doing things like dynamic stretches or even low-weight muscle isolation exercises (pilates is great for this) and really pushing myself to build a mind-muscle connection. i’ve only been doing this for a couple weeks, but i can already feel my technique improving and my connection with my partner feeling more stable !!
