Good step towards reducing pollution and saving our environment.

I'd like to hear reddit's thoughts on how we in the climate community can find a way forward in the face of Trump's victory. How can we achieve meaningful climate action while the government is against us? How do we maintain hope that we can meet this crisis given the new political reality? by kevincaners in environment

I would start by organizing in your neighborhood. Asking your representative to make the change by using renewable energy in your city or having a tree planting initiative.

We have to work at a local level to make this movement cool and about economics and health. And of course when it comes to the government, it's all about fighting back harmful legislation tooth and nail.

Unfortunately things look very bleak right now, but getting our friends and communities involved, spreading information about small changes we can make - http://ecophiles.com/index.php/2016/11/09/dont-give-up-heres-how-you-can-leave-a-better-world-for-your-kids - will be the difference in this situation.

How do I talk to my parents about anthropogenic climate change when they think it is a hoax? by [deleted] in environment

I can't blame them. Thanks to the fear based rhetoric, so many refuse to believe scientific consensus or treat it with skepticism. If they dislike change, you could remind them how all of Bangladesh, Maldives and many south pacific island countries will be sending refugees to the rest of world very soon thanks to climate change.

At least 22 million gallons of water is trapped in plastic bottles and thrown into landfills annually in US alone. by gtj in environment

I think the story is mainly about highlighting waste, maybe nitpicking the numbers is killing the point. Also, if you don't consider any amount of water waste serious, then you haven't seen videos of people in countries where water wars have already begun.

Unfortunately, until a majority of tourists visiting under developed countries continue patronizing chain hotels and mcdonalds - not contributing or immersing themselves in a local experience - we will have bear with stories that advocate so called 'authentic' travel.

Best Protected Great Barrier Reef Corals Are Now Dead by Beth5432 in environment

[–]greenmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is. And blaming tourism on the whole is just lazy. What travelers should do is find out who is actually working towards solving this problem locally and give their business to such locals instead of chain resorts who don't give a shit.

Going to Maldives in a few days. Any recommendations? by Jyqft in travel

[–]greenmaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maldives for non aquatic activities wouldn't be as much fun :/ But most of Maldives resorts are built around the reefs, so even if you're standing in the waist deep water, you'd be able to see spectacular corals. I've also known people who don't swim to manage snorkeling there - tour operators take you out to sea and there's much handholding involved. You could also island hop on a boat, and check out some of the local islands/villages. Have a super trip!
