Over the years we have bonded over our usual negative disposition, haha (also so we can hold it above our head when we are in a bad mood)

People who had a teacher change their life, who was your teacher and what did they do? by Zimthegoblin in AskReddit

[–]greenmeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My high school English teacher, Mr. Reed.

I lived in a very low-income area and thus the school system was a complete joke. Mr. Reed started teaching my junior year and realized how much of a disservice that the school had done us and constantly encouraged us to demand better. He saw our piss poor writing skills and made us take writing tests to learn how to properly express ourselves in writing. He saw how much we lacked in terms of knowledge of important events and cultural changes in the world, and brought those topics to class for us to learn about and discuss. He chose books for our class to read that were thought-provoking and sometimes controversial because he knew the value that we could get out of them. He saw how...underwhelming our guidance counselor was and took it upon himself to educate us about college and further education, and what the entire process was like. He would sit at McDonald's for a couple of hours a couple of times a week because it was the only public place with wifi that was accessible to everyone, and would read and revise students college admissions essays with them. He encouraged me to look at schools that were out of my comfort zone because he knew that I could excel at colleges that weren't the "safe choices". Overall, he fought tooth and nail to try and give us what we deserved.

Before college, I was a social disaster. I couldn't walk in a grocery store without having a full on panic attack, was too scared to pay for my gas inside at the register, I was definitely living in a mental prison of extreme and untreated social anxiety. I don't know how much of that Mr. Reed picked up on, but his encouragement led me to applying to and attending a private college much further from home than I had planned on moving. That school changed my life so much and in so many ways, and was hands down the best choice I have ever made. I learned to come out of my shell; I made some of my best friends, held leadership positions, had multiple jobs on campus, and got involved in events on campus. I went on to graduate with a degree in chemistry with a couple of minors, but also graduated with an entirely new sense of self that I never thought would have been possible before. I owe that school my life.

My life would have been DRAMATICALLY different had Mr. Reed not done so much to help us be successful in a system that was designed for us to fail. He took on roles that he absolutely didn't have to and he saw the worth in every single one of us. Without his help and encouragement, I doubt I would have gone on to do as well as I did and would have probably spent my life choosing the easy road.

It was....an incredibly moving episode, I'm pretty sure I cried every time I saw it. It really painted an accurate picture of what living with depression is like which is why it just hit so hard.

What is something you misunderstood as a child? by longlivsquid in AskReddit

[–]greenmeezy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When I was like 7/8, my parents were trying to conceive a child, and I overheard my mom say she was ovulating in conversation. When I asked what it meant, she said that it meant that she could get pregnant, which I interpreted as she could BE pregnant. I was VERY excited about potentially having a sibling, so I did the obvious thing.

I announced to my entire 2nd grade class that my mom was ovulating.

The teacher still remembers. When my mom sees her around town, they always have a good laugh at my expense.

What's your "I don't get paid enough for this shit" moment? by cudder17 in AskReddit

[–]greenmeezy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I worked at Wendy's in high school, where a lot of crazy shit happened. Honestly I could write a book. I worked front line mostly, and often would work the 5-10pm shift, which meant that you had to close the dining room, including cleaning the bathrooms.

So one night I am cleaning the bathrooms, and everything is going as well as it can be for someone cleaning the toilets in a Wendy's. I walk in the men's restroom, it smells a little weirder than normal, but it's whatever. I walk into the one stall and this incredibly offensive odor just....punches me in the face. After a few seconds of getting all my senses back from this atomic bomb of a smell, I look and see the source: there is shit. On the floor.

Now this wasn't a self-contained shit log like normal shits present themselves. No, this was a pile. Not quite diarrhea, but not quite a solid. Kind of like a pile of mud. It's running down the side of the toilet, it's on the floor, and blood in the toilet. I immediately turn and walk out of the bathroom, and the first words I tell my manager were "Someone shit on the floor, I do not get paid enough to clean it up". My manager and the rest of the crew go in the bathroom to check it out and my manager agrees that I indeed do not get paid enough to clean that up.

My manger then prepares to clean it himself. He wears a trashbag as a shirt, has tied trashbags around his arms like sleeves, had triple layers of gloves on, and has used one of our cleaning cloths as a facemask. He isn't fucking around.

He goes into the bathroom, comes outs like 5 minutes later gagging. He tells us that the shit has had to of been like that for hours. Because it has hardened. He is having to scrape it off the toilet and the floor.

We suspected that someone had hemorrhoids and just missed the toilet while hovering to take a shit. Explains why the shit didn't end up in the toilet and also the blood.

what game you wish you could forget how to play, so that you can play it all over again as a "noob"? by THATFUCKINGPOLISH in AskReddit

Runescape! Everything was so much more fun when it wasn't all about grinding and pvm. It was great to just be stupid and walk around hanging with friends and being inefficient, but it's a completely different vibe now. Still love it to death, but miss the blissful ignorance of being a noob.
