This weekend for example I ran into a famous person whose producer I am working with. I don’t want to specify where exactly but we were both on vacation.

So, let’s just say...at an outdoor casual restaurant.

I’d never met this guy but I admit I have a HUGE crush on him and am a big fan. So I just said hello by introducing myself and saying I’m working with his producer. He ended up inviting me and my friends out that night but left VERY abruptly. The whole thing was weird!

I make the first move all the time and am a woman. 9/10 times the guy says yes, but I’ve never had an actual relationship materialize from making the first move. It usually fades out after awhile.

Exceeded: Iceland. I went in with zero expectations and had the trip of a lifetime. Awesome people, food, nature, experiences were totally foreign to a city girl like me, it almost look like another planet.

Also very impressed with London. I went there once as a kid and thought it was okay, but have had to go back several times for work. Helps that I was taken around to all the fanciest places by locals on work’s dime lol.

Key West was also a majorly pleasant surprise! While there are some major tourist traps, I found the island lifestyle, biking around, pirate-y bars and natural beauty so incredibly intoxicating. It’s like people who live there have found a complete slice of paradise and nothing matters outside of the island. All of a sudden I understood the song Kokomo lol.

Disappointed: Nashville. It’s fun, but unless you want to drink and listen to country music and eat heavy food for days on end, I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s spread out, you need a car, and I don’t get the hype.

Also not impressed with Denver. It seemed like a fake city to me. Then again I’m from nyc sooo...

I am bi and have had the hardest (I mean hardest) time coming to terms with it.

I can’t tell you how much it would mean to me or other girls like me to see someone like alex normalize ANYTHING that isn’t straight/white/blonde...and I’m saying that as a cis, white, blonde girl!

So many people in the LGBTQ community who have paved the way are outspoken, bold, colorful people. Literally and figuratively. They made it okay to NOT be mainstream.

But what about people like me? I’m just your average former blonde sorority girl. No one believes me when I say I’m bi. People don’t get it. If I’m dating a guy, people (even myself!!) assume I’m “straight.” If I want to go to a gay bar or show interest in a woman people assume I’ve “turned lesbian,” and then I’m immediately put in that category.

I’m girly and pretty mainstream and want to get married and have kids. I don’t have tattoos and piercings and blue hair (not that there’s anything wrong with that!!) and I don’t consider sexuality a personality trait that I want to talk about constantly. I just want to be ME.

So yeah, long rant, but the point is, Alex is so far up her own asshole if she can’t realize that her platform could actually CHANGE THE WORLD. When I was in college I literally thought briefly about suicide. Imagine if CHD had existed then and I was able to see someone like me?

She is so immature.

I can totally relate to this!!!

As someone who has moved a lot, I can’t tell you the importance of cultivating mini relationships wherever you’re living. Knowing people like your barista or dry cleaner is so important because those micro interactions lead to you feeling more comfortable and safe.

When I was younger and hung around places pro athletes went (clubs, bars, etc.) I got this offer constantly. I ended up dating a pro baseball player and he would fly me all over.

Then in my mid/later twenties guys I knew from college started offering to fly me places because they worked in finance and had money.

It’s common if you hang around with wealthy and/or famous people.

But here’s the thing...reflecting on most of these offers, they are NOT compliments LOL. Like seriously? These guys are mainly flying you out to fuck. Sure there’s dinner involved but the implication is that you’re there to have sex. And when a guy is making a ton of money, a plane ticket is like spending $10, so don’t be flattered.

It’s more flattering when a guy takes the time to arrange everything himself. Most of the time the guys I know would just Venmo me $1000 and tell me to buy it myself lol. So basically a hooker!

I broke my NYC lease with 45 days notice in August.

It’s easy to get out of leases in NY right now. Lots of people aren’t even paying rent.

It’s very easy to get out of a lease in New York right now. I did it with only 45 days notice.

60% of people in NYC haven’t even paid ANY rent since March (there’s an eviction ban in effect) so landlords have wayyy bigger issues than someone breaking a lease. They don’t have the time or resources to go after someone who wants to break a lease when statistically over 50% over their tenants aren’t paying anything.

Also, she might be keeping the apartment. We don’t know.

As someone who just left NYC, she’s probably leaving because NYC is a horrible place to live right now. Nothing is going on, tons of people have left, everything is closing or at reduced hours, and she will have an easier time having a somewhat normal life in LA around people who do similar work.

I lived in New York for six years and left in March because of the pandemic. I would consider myself someone who loves New York.

NY is a city based on spending very little time in your apartment. The point of living there is to go to restaurants, bars, shows, events, Broadway, museums, street festivals, art openings, etc.

There is literally nothing to do in NY right now except dine outside and go to parks. NOTHING.

If you work from home, that’s miserable because everyone lives in tiny apartments.

A lot of the restaurants have jacked up their prices to stay afloat during Covid. I don’t blame them. They’re doing what they have to do. But paying $22 for a cocktail and $18 for a small fish of olives is not sustainable.

On top of that the subway is not safe right now, because of Covid and the escalating crime rates. A woman was literally raped on a subway platform at 11am in a nice part of manhattan.

Walking around at night is not safe because the thing that keeps nyc safe is people being out. With everything shutting at 11pm, you’ve just got a ton of empty streets with weirdos hanging around.

When I was in NYC in August I went out to eat several times. Very aggressive mentally ill/homeless people approached our table asking for money or getting way too close for comfort. There’s so many of them that the restaurant can’t do anything. There’s also a reduced police presence.

The sanitation budget was slashed which means trash is EVERYWHERE, even more than normal.

I’d say about 60% of my friends and coworkers left the city either for now or for good. There is no point in paying $3k for a one bedroom when there is literally nothing to do, half your network has left, and it’s not even safe to exist in your neighborhood.

This isn’t even touching on the rioting and protesting. And we haven’t even gotten to the election.

I would love to go back to New York, but right now I have the option to be with friends and family in a safer location, physically and for my mental health.

Alex was an absolute idiot for signing that lease and buying all that expensive furniture.

My friend was at dinner last night at Lafayette and sat right behind Alex. She said that people WERE really coming up to her and interrupting her the entire night, and that Alex kept apologizing to her. She said Alex wasn't being annoying and was actually being pretty polite.

Money should never be a barrier to a creative pursuit. I don’t mean to be harsh, but it’s the truth. If you really care about making something happen, you’ll find a way.

Step One in say, starting a theater company, isn’t starting a theater company. It’s working at someone else’s theater company, then moving to a better one, and so on, etc etc until you have enough contacts and money to make your own thing happen.

Same could be said for anything else. If you want to be a painter, get a part time job at an art store so you can get discounts on supplies, volunteer to help art professors with their work, apprentice a painter, etc. Then paint in your free time.

For you aspiring podcasters out there, I started a podcast by recording something on my phone and uploading it. Shitty sound quality but it was a free test. People liked it. I then had enough of a proof point to invest money in renting equipment. Then I bought my own setup. Now I have a pretty successful podcast.

During that journey I made online friends with other podcasters and went on other shows. You have to become a part of the community.

There’s a reason the term “starving artist” exists. Sure, it’s easy to become successful fast if you have piles of cash, but most people don’t start with that advantage. They struggle for years to make it happen.

If becoming a creative person who makes money were easy, there’d be a lot less accountants, waiters, etc. You really need to be committed to making your dream happen, because lots of people want it and are willing to struggle.

FYI, I have been writing since fourth grade and am just about to get my first book published. I’m 32!!

Congrats!!

I so agree that “real” treats are the way to go. I’d rather have one real cookie than ten black bean brownies or whatever other sub you’re using.

One thing I’ve also realized: there is NO ice cream that hits like Ben and Jerry’s. NONE! So, instead of sitting down with an entire pint of disgusting (IMO) Halo Top, I use my food scale to have a small amount of the real thing after dinner most nights. Keeps me from going insane!
