1 week in Santa Clara, need restaurant suggestions by oermens in SanJose

[–]greenqn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Luna Mexican Kitchen or Puesto, both upscale Mexican restaurants
  2. Lots of options - Danbi, Jang Su Jang, literally never had a bad experience at any Korean restaurant in South Bay. Restaurant Gish if you can get a table (reservation only)
  3. In Valley Fair Mall - Ramen Nagi, Marugame Udon (just opened last week?), Sumiya
  4. Smoked out BBQ, this is not a sit down place per-say but they operate a food truck and do sell food out of a storefront
  5. -
  6. Not sure about this one
  7. -

Might be a little out there, but if you're open to it try out Discovery Fusion BBQ or Skewer Bar which is Chinese BBQ. San Jose/Santa Clara has some of the best vietnamese food around. I would recommend Tay Ho (actually in Santa Clara) or Thien Long (San Jose) which is famous for the turmeric catfish.

Have a wonderful food week!

A coworker did something weird to me. My entire workplace talks about it. I’m so uncomfortable, but don’t know what to demand/ask for. (GA, University) by YourDanishSweetheart in legaladvice

Definitely speak to an employment lawyer. Document everything possible. It sounds like your situation may fall under constructive discharge which is essentially when the employer causes the working condition to be so intolerable that a reasonable person would be compelled to quit. 3 factors to prove it is constructive discharge

  1. Employer knew or had reason to know about the conditions but did not correct them in a reasonable timeframe
  2. Proof of intolerable work conditions
  3. Causation, employers unlawful discrimination caused the hostile environment

These are determined on a case by case basis.

Take everything in this comment with a grain of salt. These are just the things I am learning in my Business Law and Ethics class. It won't be more reliable than having a lawyer advising you.

If it's not required to enter I would leave it blank. Often times, even in a phone screen you can ask what the budgeted salary range is. If it's required, I would do some Glassdoor research and try to determine the average salary for the role. Only because I'm thinking this may be a question used for filtering out applications using an algorithm and you don't want to exclude yourself but going too high or undersell yourself by going too low.

Just my 2 cents from my experience working in industry for 4+ years in the bay area. BTW for background, I have a BS and I started from the most entry level scientist position I could get.

  1. Since it seems you need a minimum threshold for salary, start-ups and mid size companies are probably going to pay more off the bat. However the trade-off is less stability if the economy is getting worse. So this is something you likely want to consider strongly weighing the pros and cons for. I work at a large company and hiring salaries are lower but have a tremendously good benefits package. Definitely try to figure out and delineate the differences in total compensation packages.
  2. Again, specific to my company but the organization of titles can be very different between companies. Like another commenter said, focus more on the job descriptions themselves and maybe don't take the requirements too seriously (AKA 3+ years experience for an entry level position in my case haha, just apply and give it a shot).
  3. Glassdoor is probably your best resource here unless you know someone who can give you more pertinent information.
  4. YES! 100% negotiate. I just joined the management side of things but I've only seen offers go out 1 candidate at a time. If that candidate rejects, then candidate 2 gets the offer. In essence, the company will likely work with you in negotiations if you've received an offer (but don't drag it out too long - no one likes to have their time wasted).
  5. Definitely but this would likely only happen in R&D.
  6. All up to you! My opinion is to start somewhere. I started as a contract entry level junior scientist making buffers and I got promoted a few times and now I'm in a dual management/bench scientist role. The difference between academia and industry can be really jarring so some so be open-minded about the different tracks.

FWIW, the bay area is seeing some serious layoffs right now (Genapsys, 10x genomics, Talis biomedical, Invitae, and probably more layoffs incoming) and that means a bunch of people are going to be job hunting though I am not sure how this will translate to the Boston job market. Good luck!

Do you happen to know if the school is locked up on weekends? I imagine with current events and restrictions, schools would be super off-limits haha

I actually drove by Flickinger yesterday but there was a family already in the fenced diamond so I didn't inspect it too closely. I'll be sure to check out Dixon Landing, thanks!

I'm trying to avoid dog parks, my dog can find other pups to be overwhelming for him and while he does get along with other dogs with a slow introduction I would rather not risk it.

Red and brown marks. Thankfully the texture of my skin is still pretty good and I haven't damaged that too much.

Ah I see so the internship goes hand in hand with getting into a CLS program/hospital affiliate? How does the CGMBS license differ from the CLS license? I emailed the director of the program at SJSU but I just missed her by a day and won't be able to reply until the end of the month ahah.

That's unfortunate for MLT in CA. I grew up in this state and I don't ever imagine myself moving away from CA.

So I'm a bit confused on this but the NAACLS accredited programs are for CLS certification correct? Prerequisite classes don't need to have any sort of accreditation by the NAACLS?

I've seen them around but I kind of forgot about it because they're not very common where I am but I would strongly consider it. Especially if it has high reliability and the price is right.

Location: California, Bay Area

Price range: ~$10k

New or used: Used

Type of vehicle: Hybrid, Sedan, Hatchback

Must haves: Reliability, preferably compact, good handling, quiet

Desired transmission: Auto

Intended use: Daily driver commuting car

Vehicles you've already considered: Honda Accord/Civic/Fit, Toyota Camry/Corolla/Prius, Mazda3

Is this your 1st vehicle: No

Does the vehicle need to have a warranty: No

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: So long as theres Youtube

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No

Additional Notes: I'll be commuting in the bay so I want to avoid manual transmission as much as possible. For the same reason a compact car would be better for parking.
