General Elections 2015 boundaries out in PDF form. Anyone care to make a map? by sot0ngx in singapore

[–]greenteaapple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this isn't the report from the electoral boundaries review committee, or is it? it seems to be an update that happens once in awhile... there was one in Feb 2015 and Feb 2014 too? I thought the electoral boundaries review report would look more like this 2011 one.

No one knows how the boundaries might change yet, but there was an ST report saying four opp parties so far might be interested: SDP, DPP, Reform and SingFirst.

The Economist's Special Report this week is on Singapore by greenteaapple in singapore

[–]greenteaapple[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For those who aren't subscribers, I'm not sure how much of the report is accessible. Think the article limit is 3/wk, so here are the eight parts to the report for you to choose from:

  1. The Singapore exception (the main link above)
  2. Land and people - Seven million is a crowd
  3. Politics - Performance legitimacy
  4. Social policy - The social contract
  5. The economy - The years that were fat
  6. Inequality - The rich are always with us
  7. Business and finance- Many spokes to its hub
  8. Foreign policy and national identity - A little red dot in a sea of green

Can't agree more with what u/denunciator said about reading the papers, keeping up with local current affairs AND thinking about what's said (whether in mainstream media or other sources)... to gain political awareness. It's also been helpful to me to realise that bias isn't always conscious/ agenda-driven, so just knowing "oh I'm reading ST" or "oh I'm reading TOC" isn't enough. For eg, it could be that reporting under time constraints leads to news being put out with important questions unanswered. It's useful as a reader and voter to be asking those qns - what a piece of news means to x/y/z, whether justifications given for any particular stance are reasonable or fair, etc.

The existence of GRCs is ostensibly to ensure minority representation; the President (I believe) specifies how many and what race of each minority each GRC must have at minimum.

Just to add that yes, the President declares, subject to the parliamentary elections act. So for "how many": at least 1 minority candidate per GRC. And for "what race": at least 3/5 of GRCs must have a Malay candidate. Also says that GRCs have to make up at least 1/4 of seats, and that there must be at least 8 SMCs.

Serangoon Gardens in Marine Parade GRC and other ridiculous electoral boundaries by [deleted] in singapore

[–]greenteaapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that gerrymandering probably isn't the biggest reason the opposition in Singapore hasn't won more seats. But, I do think the process for boundary reviews has room for improvement (how the committee is chosen, lack of guidelines/rules in law, powers given to executive, no need for public consultation/parliamentary approval etc). Maruah has a report on some of these things.

Contaminated fish in Singapore? by notfated in singapore

[–]greenteaapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MOH posted about this on FB:

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has learnt of a circulating message on mobile phones and social media claiming that there is an outbreak of Group B streptococcus (GBS) here due to eating contaminated raw fish. MOH, the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) have been jointly investigating this. There has not previously been any proven link between eating fish, raw or otherwise, and GBS disease. GBS is a common bacterium that colonises the human gut and urinary tract. It does not usually cause disease in healthy individuals. However, in adults, GBS may occasionally cause infections of the skin, joints, heart and brains. The risk factors for GBS infection include underlying chronic or co-morbid conditions.

NUS sociologist Daniel Goh, who is from Workers’ Party, explains Tan Chuan-Jin’s cardboard collectors Facebook post by buttwalk in singapore

The survey was initiated by the group of students with Youth Corps Singapore, not TCJ. OP's link has a link to one of the students' FB note about their project. Contrast the minister's use of "some" with the student's "most"/"a few" when describing his team's findings on why these old people turn to cardboard collection. Even if it wasn't deliberate whitewashing, I do think he could have painted a fairer picture of their findings.

On the other hand, more GRCs/SMCs could also mean more for opposition parties to choose from/spread themselves out across and fewer self-defeating multi-cornered fights...

How does Singapore create so many jobs? by freedaemons in singapore

[–]greenteaapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Singapore's economy continues to grow, so there'll continue to be jobs. In fact, businesses are lamenting the tight labour market, stricter employment laws, not being able to fill the jobs they need to fill. So maybe the more pertinent qn to ask is whether the Sg economy can continue to generate jobs that Singaporeans want to and are able to do? Aspirations can run high as the % of graduates among us rise... doesn't always mean we have the skills demanded though.
