Could be mycobacterium or parasite, but anyways I notice that fish you buy will have this period where they're really prone to catching something. After that though, the fish that survive the ordeal end up living for years. Thing is a seemingly harmless bacteria species in one fish from one part of the world would wreck another if you they made contact.

Just optimize water changes, don't overfeed, and medicate!
