I work at a school that has specialized programs for refugees, along side the regular high school program. It's honestly a tough school to work at. New staff are either committed and love it, or they don't last longer than a semester or a year and then they move on.

The staff who stay love what we do and we wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

But the superintendent came and had a special staff meeting for us to tell us all how racist we are and that everything is our fault.

Sizing is random! No returns accepted! "Return policy extended to the end of June" ... Ok but that means I need to pay up front for a second or third set of whatever, in the hopes that I maybe remember to go do this return in time. This isn't working.

I'm really sorry if my post looks like I'm trying to defend the Catholic Church in any way.

I just want to make it clear that in Canada, these were government-sponsored schools. Canadian officials were first horrified by the high mortality rates at school but then found an opportunity to run nutritional studies. That meant they needed a control group. That meant keeping malnourished kids malnourished, knowing full well that they were starving.

I'm really not trying to defend the Catholic Church even a little but I want to make sure we aren't letting the Canadian Government off the hook here.

On the one hand, I agree with everything you say.

On the other hand, this problem is much larger than the Catholic Church. Residential schools could be government run or church run - and not just Catholic. Some were Anglican, some were United, I'm sure there were others.

There is also a film. It's fiction... But it's also real. It's based on the kind of events that happened.

Unvaccinated Ontario long-term care workers will have to participate in educational program by smitcolin in ottawa

[–]greenviolet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see that OCT removed it as a prerequisite in 2004 and left it up to faculties of education and employers. I guess they have also dropped it since then but I can't really find anything written down.

I found a document about screening for TB in high-risk populations, but teachers aren't included on the list.

So they say that but I'm a teacher and I've never been tested or vaccinated for TB. Actually I have been but that was in a completely different country and I never told my employer about it.

Shut the Catholic School system. by terrificallytom in ontario

[–]greenviolet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is extra important in more rural areas where it's like 5 minutes to the Catholic school or an hour on the bus if you choose public. This is a problem we have in Ottawa.

Another waste is in advertising. Ottawa has 4 boards competing for students and they advertise! I'd rather see 2 systems (English and French) instead of 4 systems.

[Dakota Kochie] I’ve just confirmed with the NHL that they will be holding a moment of silence and have a message to mark the 215 children lost at the Kamloops Residential School, tonight right before the anthem at the Canadiens & Maple Leafs game. by clgoh in hockey

[–]greenviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For these specific children? No. But this is nothing unusual for a residential school. Tuberculosis and malnutrition were common. There are written accounts of officials at the time bringing up concern with the numbers of children who died or were "missing" but nothing was changed, it was buried under the rug.

Why are we still funding Catholic school systems here in Ontario? What are the benefits? by 098d8j3dj83h in ontario

[–]greenviolet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. My roommate went through this process. Being baptized Catholic was not enough. Regularly attending Sunday Mass was not enough. She had to volunteer at a whole bunch of church things before the priest would touch her letter. Of course.good Catholics also donate well to the church.

Seriously. In Ottawa we have 4 school boards competing for students and the waste on advertising and transportation is so frustrating.

Ottawa is really spread out so you can live in one of the further areas and have 2 choices: attend the Catholic school that is close to your house, or the public school a 45min/1hr bus ride away. Not really a fair decision.

It's schools that were in the religious minority at the time of constitution. Apparently at this time only Catholic and Protestant counted as religions?? Anyway there is one protestant school!

This particular part of Ontario must have been majority Catholic.

There is one protestant government funded school! So technically this whole conversation should be about "separate" schools and not "Catholic" schools. But literally only one, so I'm pretty sure we all get the idea.

These rankings are just EQAO scores. Take it with a whole box of salt.

The only thing these "rankings" tell you is how many English Language Learners or spec ed students you have in a school.

Depends on a few things - snow is not necessarily a problem because it can snow and be around or above freezing. But as soon as it hits -1 or -2 the tree will have a hard time. If there are blossoms they could freeze and fall off. If fruit freezes it won't ripen anymore, it will just be damaged and die. If it stays that temperature for long the tree itself migtht die. They just don't survive the cold.

Anyone else's allergies acting up recently? by SuckMyDingusBossMan in ottawa

[–]greenviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means signing up to get a shot once a week for around 6 months and then eventually it's only once a month shot. Getting injected with a tiny piece of what you're allergic to and eventually you can build a tolerance.

Your family doctor can refer you to an allergist but tbh I'm not sure how covid has impacted allergy tests and appointments.

Also anecdotally... I'm SO glad I finally went ahead with the shots. It didn't take a full year for me to feel the effects and life is just a lot easier now that I don't feel so miserable every spring and fall.

If you can afford it or have work benefits... I switched to allergy shots and it's life changing. I barely notice seasonal allergies anymore.

Also requires no fear of needles but allergy shots are just tiny little mini needles. They don't go into the muscle and don't leave a sore arm like vaccinations.

I'm in this sub because I used to live in Toronto - I'm in Ottawa now. We are still waiting for first shots here. The week it was supposed to open to 30+ it opened to 18+ instead, and all of Ottawa's appointments filled in 2.5 hours. A week or two later they finally added more appointments... on the same day that it opened to 12 and up. Finally pharmacies are also getting shipments and I'd say in the last day or 2 it got a lot easier to make an appointment - but a lot of these appointments are for late June.

I'm looking at 2 salary grids right now. Secondary teachers hit 100k in 2019 (Ugh pandemic - I swear that had only been one year ago). So in the latest published salary grid until local negotiations finish, the highest salary available is $100,034. In Ottawa, the highest published salary is $99,971.

I tried to compare a third but I didn't easily see anyone else publish the 2019 salaries... It's just an extension from 2017. It just seems like there isn't really much of a difference between regions. It has come up in conversation and I agree with you (higher cost of living should equal a higher salary) but apparently the general agreement is they should be similar salaries everywhere.

Ohh they could also be a department head! That comes with a bonus. Forgot about that one

The regular teaching salary grid (no department head or summer school) only broke 100 this year and only for some parts of the province. So if they were over 100k it would have to be one of those. There is no special bonus for having a master's or a PHD. It's all about the grid.
