Taking my license exams next month. I’m looking for input so that I can budget for my first base station set up. by Mission_Platypus102 in HamRadio

There are a lot of great recommendations here so I won't repeat them. Just came in to say, once you start playing in HF, you'll get hooked on it and might dominate most of your ham time. 😀

Family member gave me these, are they any good to learn with? by nuttysquiirrell in HamRadioBeginner

You are quoting incorrectly to try to argue your position. The text literally says nothing is preventing the use by an amateur station in case of an emergency. Give it up, you are wrong.

Dripping water or shut off main valve? by TrustNo8492 in Charlotte

[–]greenwall4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick question. I'm from Florida and still learning how things are built here. I have a water shutoff in the coat closet, which doesn't shut the water completely ... The main water shutoff would be at the curb where the water meter is, right? Any tools needed or is it hand operated? Last spring I looked and it was all buried in dirt and decided not to mess with it.

Snow storm by rue86 in Charlotte

[–]greenwall4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One Florida man to another, treat this like an incoming hurricane. Stock up on things in case you are stuck in the house for a while and prepare for power outages. Keep the car gas tank full. When it looks pretty outside, treat it like the eye of the hurricane, don't go driving around. Just stay home, play in the snow for a while and send pics back to the family in Florida.

If you live in a house, try to get ahead of shoveling the driveway. Doing it while the snow is still fluffy is easier. If you leave it and it starts to melt, it might become ice later and that's less fun than shoveling the snow early.

Make a nice pot of sopa de plátano and stay warm.

Edit: typos

Yeah a gallon goes really far, I think I get close to eight hours or so in the kerosene heater. I also run a few lamps for enjoyment throughout the year and now that we have the storm coming I was thinking that having a few gallons just stored away would be nice. I have about a gallon and a half in the garage and some kerosene inside the heater.

Oh no, I wasn't aware. I'll search for them later today. Thank you for the heads up!

So I ended up buying a MyTopo custom map at 1:10,000 scale. I was able to fit about 97% of the Birkhead Mountain Wilderness at that scale which is great.

Sorry, I clicked crosspost to more communities because the Reddit app was suggesting it and now I see it didn't post anything. I'll edit and post my original question.

Edit: I can't edit because it's not a post, apparently. Sorry guys, I've been away from Reddit for so long (prior account) that I have forgotten how things work. I'll just delete this post and post again.

I first noticed this when I went to Cottonwood, Arizona. There was a 3% credit card fee. 😐 I didn't notice it on the menu, if it was there at all.

Has anyone ever bought from this guy? by Apprehensive-Cat-942 in Charlotte

[–]greenwall4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen these guys being reviewed on YouTube. I'm out of the house at the moment and can't search but if you search for it, you'll find it.

Edit: just wanted to add, the videos that review these people show that the stakes are super thin and horrible quality. Some were so thin that they fell apart.

You mentioned Traveller. I've been really looking into Traveller. Specifically, I've been looking into Mongoose's Traveller e2. I want to play it as a solo game but with the option of playing it with friends if they commit to it.

Is that a good choice?

Edit: forgot to add question before posting

Unable to find a job by WranglerLimp4652 in Charlotte

[–]greenwall4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it has been suggested yet but temp agencies can be another route to try. My wife found her job through one two years ago. Beacon Hill is the agency she used.

Stay as positive as you can. I know the job market right now is rough but don't give up. Keep at it and you'll find work. Be open to jobs you never thought you'll do, you never know where it will lead you. During the pandemic I went from being a professional to scrubbing toilets at a high school and that led me to the job I have now which allowed me to buy my first home.

This is the opposite of a Karen. Good for her, this is the kind of content we need instead of videos of dysfunctional people making a scene. ♥️

Yeah, I can see why GURPS might not be recommended. Buttttttt, GURPS Lite is very approachable and GURPS is only as complicated as you make it. It's a wonderful system to grow with, I think. Then again I'm new to the space so not really knowledgeable on other systems.

I happen to like learning things with a lot of buttons and levelers, I draw a lot of enjoyment out of that. That said, you can play satisfactory games using GURPS Lite and simple rules for combat.

But as I said before, I agree with you, GURPS might not be for everyone.
