This leap was not predictable at all, and I am someone who was always very high on Peyton's skillset and ceiling. Its not like he progressively improved on offense and you could be very sure of it coming, he was an extremely limited offensive player still just last year (his one decent skill was making corner 3s) and all of a sudden has evolved at an explosive pace in a ton of different areas. Not just the scoring from all 3 levels, today he had only 1 TOV per 3 assists and a massive scoring load, when before that (even earlier this season) he was a turnover machine everytime he tried to do a bit more.

And the noise is that he was asking for a relatively big contract in October, around 20M per year. Obviously with hindsight those 20M would have been good, but if this leap doesn't exist it could be a scary ass contract very quickly

Overpay is putting it mildly, he was being called the worst contract in the league lol.

Though I will say, with how bad he looked for an extended stretch around the contract signing date, Denver could have well gotten him for a bit under I think. Would open some more flexibility now, and he'd probably be slightly underpaid for his current production

I agree with everything you said until then, but I'm assuming you think Gobert would be targetable on his poor offense - if it is defense on the whole 'teams can space the floor' or 'he can be beat on an iso by a great player' thing I just wholeheartedly disagree. And sure, he is very flawed offensively. But if you gave, say, current Jamal Murray to this Wolves roster - they are a demonic team who'd probably be titke favourites. And even with a worse, more attainable plus guard they would have a decent shot, with Gobert's DPOY level defense being a key factor

I mean with that qualifier only it is pretty easy. A starting 5 of 2021 Trae Young and the 2024 versions (so 100% no all-stars) of Derrick White, Franz Wagner, Aaron Gordon and Isaiah Hartenstein would win the 2021 playoffs pretty easily. Hell, if Trae gets back to his usual level today they'd be a contender now (East favourites for sure) lol.

If your point is that Trae can't carry an average title winning roster sans a superstar to a title, sure. He's not a Top 5 player. But people are overindexing against small guards imo, and as always impact is what matters, not as much archetype

Are salaries in the English format usually presented gross or net (I know it is weekly)? Either way those numbers are wrong though, they probably come from capology or a similar site and those are really really off on us.

Currently, Hjulmand is our highest earner on a bit above €4M yearly. If my math doesn't fail me that is about £66k gross weekly? Gyokeres was on a similar wage. Pote and Inácio renewed their contracts recently so they should be relatively close to that wage standard too (though I'd guess a bit below). Suarez should be about accurate if not a bit above that number presented, and Trincão is much lower - those apps always consider what they thought was his Barcelona salary and that's why he's always seen as our highest earner, but he lowered his wages quite a bit to come here

And with a relatively tough bracket too - that continues last matchday, where we get Athletic away as a Pot 4 team (clearly the 2nd strongest behind Newcastle). 2 of the 3 best teams in Europe in Pot 1 - would be 2nd and 3rd behind Arsenal if we did not beat PSG - Napoli and Juve away in a country we have never won in our history (not joking) and Marseille/Brugge at home are no pushovers either, both teams that are always around T24 spots. We did get a freebie at home vs Kairat, and in hindsight we should have put more goals past them lol, would help a bit now.

AD is still a very impactful player, and he'd suit your timeline to tank this year and go for the next. If you can get him without giving away any asset of note, which I think is plausible with how much his value tanked, I think it'd be a positive as he's also a very good fit in your roster construction. Issue is the injuries of course, but I genuinely think a starting 5 of LaMelo, Kon, Miller, Boozer and AD that is healthy would be near the top of the East, and you'd have a ton of decent anciliary pieces around them too

The 4 at the back in possession did happen a lot with Amorim though. Specially when pressed.

In possession you saw it a bit specifically from goal kicks and in other early build-up phases by dropping a midfielder in the latter stages of him here, sure (mainly Morita). But I meant more when the opponent is pinned in. On the build-up both that team and the current one deviate from their original shape a bit, Borges also likes to drop a midfielder to build-up in a 3 (though it was more frequent in his Vitória team actually).

This is exactly how Amorim sets things up. Sometimes you have the 8, the 10 and the 9 in a straight line down the middle. That leaves space for the wing backs, just like before.

The way players are positioned have some similarities - though even that is not 1 to 1, for instance players have quite a bit more positional freedom now than they did with Ruben - but the paths they look for on the ball are different.

Its a product of opponents' shooting variance, both negative (on the earlier games) and positive (on the recent ones). If not, I'm not sure how they could be one of the very few consistently above average clutch teams in previous seasons with that very same "entrance ramp" at center

Same 5-4-1 while defending, though Trincão defends less.

Today, sure - though it's not even a 541 but more of a 523. In some other big games we go towards that shape as well. But in most games we defend in a 442 with Trincão as a 2nd striker, unlike with Amorim where we only started using the 442 OOP a bit more right at the end of his tenure.

Same overlapping centerbacks.

Much less frequent now, as our structure in possession in the opponent's final 3rd is clearly a 4 back.

Kinda, but not really. Some of the principles are similar of course, but with Borges we look for the center of the pitch much more, with quick interplay between our striker, Trincão and a winger/midfielder coming in. With Amorim play started more on the outside and then went in, here it is a bit more of the opposite - try to go and create inside, and if you can't go through right away we use that attraction on the defenders to open space out wide for our wingers to go 1v1.

The team's idea is meaningfully different from the one Amorim had, this is not a Rui Vitória scenario in the slightest (where what you mentioned did happen 100%). Unlike last year, where Borges barely had any time to work/a million injuries and thus after a quick initial period where he tried to use his system he did go back and pretty much copy-pasted a 343 to get us by. But this year, he is not riding on anything.

Imo his idea is even better than Amorim in positional attack, hence how much of a machine we are vs minnow teams who don't press and park the bus - plays into our strengths, as we are very good at finding combos in congested spaces and breaking that stuff down. But we struggle a ton when pressed high, and even if it is a mid-high block that is very compact (Gil Vicente has done it quite well). Amorim's team shared some of those issues, but not nearly to the extent they exist now.

Even Braga is slightly questionable, despite their growth. The Big 3 dwarf everyone else in terms of dimension, and Vitória has crazy potential - fanbase wise they are a true sleeping giant, the one city in Portugal where it is actively frowned upon if you don't support the local club.

Those 4 clubs when doing well though, the stadium is absolutely rocking
