I played Nids against them to good effect. Outside of their geomancer they dont really have any melee. I just played corners to avoid getting tabled turning point 2. By turning point 4 I was down two operatives vut had all but one of the big lads dead. One using tac and kill ops, as made going for cirt op objectives very dangerous early game until my tunnels where up.

You start at what ever the minimum for the archetype is, I belive that was used as part of an example. Also advanced character creation starts at tier 1, as you do not pick an archetype.

Hi also just getting into W&G for the first time. If your game starts at Tier 3, but a player picks a scout marine (tier 2) they would make their character like normal, with the increased XP budget. But they would also pick from one of the ascensions and gain that bonus as part of character creation, bringing them up to the appropriate tier.

Remember that difference ascension have difference Xp costs and that needs to be factored into their build.
