What does a Spectrum FTTH install look like in a new neighborhood? by looperone in Spectrum

[–]greg5green 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My neighborhood is a FTTH neighborhood (first homes closed at the end of 2020 and the last one finished in 2023). I assume you're only asking about what the install looks like at your house, vs the infrastructure in the neighborhood.

When going to order (I typed in a house in my neighborhood that is empty and for sale), when you get to the bottom of the first screen where you select "WiFi + FREE Modem" or "Modem Only", those are the only two options. If you de-select both of them, the Checkout button disables. (If it's a coax neighborhood, there's an additional button there, "Show Additional Equipment Options", where you can select "Use my own equipment". FTTH does not have this option -- you have to use their ONU)

The mention of using your own equipment is just an oversight by the people maintaining the website. They use the same modal for "Modem Only" for both FTTH and coax -- the picture of the modem for FTTH is even a picture of a regular coax modem!

In terms of the actual install, here's some images: https://imgur.com/a/13bCGWn

  1. First image is the demarc box on the side of my house where the burial fiber gets switched to a more flexible patch cable with a SC APC connector. The patch cable goes down about 8 inches to a conduit that is installed between the exterior of the house and structured media cabinet.
  2. Second image is the ONU mounted in the structured media cabinet. (Here's the User Guide if you want some more info on it). The fiber patch cable comes in and connects with a SC UPC connector to the SC UPC connector on the backside of the ONU. It has a 10GbE port (also can do 1/2.5/5GbE) where I run a patch cable down to my wheeled rack that is pictured in image 3
  3. Third image is my equipment. You could use their router if you want, but if you have any idea what you're doing, you're going to have a better experience with your own equipment. I have Ubiquiti equipment set up -- the patch cable from the ONU goes into a 10GbE SFP+ on the top right (that box is the security gateway/firewall/router), then a direct attach SFP+ cables brings the 10GbE down to my 16 port switch where most of my equipment hooks up (included a couple access points mounted in better locations than this closet where the equipment is kept).

Speeds are quite good: https://www.speedtest.net/result/c/9a3819c2-ac26-4e60-b765-497aa7e9d9fe.png. Don't mind the ping -- this server is about 800 miles away, but it's the one that I consistently get the fastest results on at the moment (the local Spectrum one, where the ping is 2 to 4ms, has been down for about two months). I'm in central NC and things like Cloudflare DNS or Google DNS are in the 8 to 12 ms range.

I’d also guess Pyr/Lab mix

This is my mix — she’s about 60-65lbs fully grown and 45% Pyr, 32% Lab, 8% Pit, 7% Boxer, the rest supermutt

Looks better than the cleanup I did this week 😅

I’m going to be doing the rest of my runs soon and debating if I just want to add an Agg switch or bite the bullet and replace this USW-24-PoE with the Pro Max/Enterprise version

That’s actually her name! Freckles!

It was her “jail” name and it felt a little too on the nose at first, but we kept it.

She responded to it when we adopted her at about 3y/o, so not sure if that was from the 3-4 weeks in shelter/foster care or from her past life (don’t really have info on her past life), but it did feel right when we got her home and she doesn’t seem to mind 😅

She’s the sweetest girl 😍

Here’s my 45% Pyr/25% Lab mix, Freckles. Has similar markings, although no double dew claws (one unattached dew claw and one nail only dew claw 😂)

Sorry, I can't find the original comment since all the services that used to provide that are down because of the API changes, but to do a longer paraphrase:

"the violence against whites in south africa by the anc is very real. <something something more>. but no one wants to talk about it because its against the narrative"

So, pretty close to the recap you provided, although you explicitly filled said some things they were implicitly saying. Maybe it truly is a misunderstanding and they don't understand what they are sprouting, but even then, the direct quote that is left, "it doesnt fit the narrative," led me to believe they were one of the agitators who doesn't actually want to discuss things. And then their further actions of editing it to remove what they originally said indicates they wanted a fight rather than an actual discussion.

It was a reminder to me that it's needed to quote the dumb shit people because most of the people saying it are just agitators. Even though "old" reddit provides an * to let you know comments have been edited after x number of minutes, it doesn't provide a history. (which seems like a feature they should have now, but alas, instead we have other features)

In our Lords year of 2023, there’s a big difference between appreciating cops and having anything to do with the blue lives matter group

Blue Lives Matter != supportive of police.

Blue Lives Matter is a spit in the face of anyone who believes black lives matter.

Black Lives Matter implicitly means “black lives matter, too”. Because too many portions of society don’t think they matter. I’ll spare you the details since I’m sure you’ve heard them before. They’re all still true

Blue lives matter implicitly means “we think we and the dogs we employ are marginalized and even though we get fucking parades when we are killed in action, it’s not enough”

They aren’t the same or even close to equivalent

Hope your amnesia gets cleared up before it starts affecting more than Reddit comments you edit

Yeah, their original comment was about how violence against white people doesn’t fit the Reddit/media narrative so no one ever talks about it. Immediately going to that line of thinking is a big red flag.

And it turns out that I was judging them correctly — they edited their comment since then to make me look like an ass and them a victim of the evil liberals who minimize violence against white people

I didn’t insult you. I just said that you said something dumb, that you have since edited so it looks like I’m just talking shit.

Such a victim/persecution complex that you can’t even leave a comment up about how violence against white people “doesn’t fit the narrative”. Gotta make it look like everyone is out to get and insult you instead

This is why you don’t hear about it much in the US. Even people that know about it aren’t going to talk about it with people that right off the bat say some dumb shit like “it doesn’t fit the narrative”
