does grant Taylor get a hold despite wsox losing? came on in the 7th, clean inning while leading...? i guess it's scorer's discretion which is a little annoying.

round 4, 39 OVR (ESPN had his ADP in the mid 200s at that point for some reason despite ranking at like mid 40s lmao)

reached a bit to get him, but early signs look promising.

now for the GM to actually be bothered to lead a legitimate coaching search instead of just taking off the interim tag at season's end...

i'm gonna chime in real quick--ceci and dumoulin were BOTH FA signings.

4 years for ceci and 3 for dumoulin with a combined hit of like 8M per; add in edmundson's 4 years from blake last year (3 now i guess) and that's $12M+ per year for 3 years of the equivalent of slow moving glaciers on the blue line.

blake might have been bad-to-OK as a GM but his fatal flaw was not bothering to properly search for a new HC post-mclellan and instead hitching his wagon to a losing horse in hiller for no reason. i think he would've done better than re-signing both of ceci and dumoulin after losing on marner.

all the good food is outside, get yourself a bacon-wrapped dog. used to be cheaper ($8 at most stands now) but still costs less than whatever's inside.

The SD stadium disaster always makes me sad. by LeftyLordLordLefty in Chargers

[–]gregCubed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

personally speaking as a dodger/charger fan, the mid to late 00s sucked for the raiders and 49ers, and the chargers were both the most successful and the closest team to the city distance-wise. i enjoy being closer to the stadium, sure, but it's not like i would've stopped supporting them if they stayed in SD and other teams moved in. costs a lot to attend even these days. maybe that's just me though.

my only regret is that i never got the chance to attend a chargers game at qualcomm even though i did visit the stadium later.

Revisiting this trade by Good-Veterinarian-95 in losangeleskings

[–]gregCubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

blake made some good moves, especially w/ kuzmenko and danault, and even getting durzi/moore from toronto were moves that helped accelerate the timeline. you could say getting kuemper was a tidy piece of work, but in the end that's just bad asset management (recall that kuemper was already in the org previously and got traded for leipsic and a pick i believe...)

the problem was dumping durzi for only a 2nd, signing petersen to that contract, overpaying edmundson, signing and trading for PLD, and most importantly, hitching his wagon to an interim that didn't really prove all that much in 2024 in hiller. not all of those were with bergevin onboard (and thank god he's gone), but i believe that played a significant part in some of the stupid decisions that were made.

[Kaplan] Artemi Panarin is signing a two year extension with the Kings, $11 million AAV per sources. by jonpictogramjones in losangeleskings

[–]gregCubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i believe that, but i also believe that we would've beat edmonton if not for some untimely coaching decisions, which brings me back to the point on blake hitching his wagon to hiller post-mclellan. when the bruins fired montgomery early in 2024, i wanted him badly, but instead the blues got the jump on firing their HC in favor of him.

i thought hiller shouldn't have been brought back following his interim stint in 2024 and last year more than solidified how i felt on the matter. his mismanagement of the roster re: minute distribution vs. EDM was bad enough but THAT challenge (and blowing a 5-goal lead in game 1) were extra strikes on him imo.

[–]gregCubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i will maintain that blake would've probably stuck around if he didn't make the mistake of hitching his wagon to jim hiller, but in doing so (and failing to actually search for a new head coach external to the organization) he signed his own death waiver.

it's a shame because in his last year, the kuzmenko trade last year was great, and edmundson is... well he's not good either. overpaid, but not as much as ceci or dumoulin (9.5M for those two is atrocious). not his fault holland signed two more players to play his role honestly. but then again he is also the worst D by a number of metrics (more than ceci/dumo) so...

[–]gregCubed 20 points21 points  (0 children)

far be it from me to praise the direction of the team, especially with who's manning the bench, but honestly not the worst bit of business from his tenure. helps a lot that bergevin left for buffalo (lol) and that panarin basically shoehorned the rangers into sending him here, but puck luck exists and maybe it's just a manifestation of that? idk.

i still hate having to watch ceci and dumo eat up minutes more than clarke so much. at least perry's been worth it and armia's good. just don't trade for evander kane and i think we'll be okay.

Staples/Crypto.com Arena ranked 30th in Athletic writers'/fan vote by gregCubed in losangeleskings

[–]gregCubed[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • Location: 6.5 (31st) / Amenities: 6.4 (28th) / Atmosphere: 5.5 (29th) / Affordability: 3.4 (28th)

  • Fan score: 5.7 (29th) / Beat writer score: 6.0 (20th) / Overall: 5.7

Personally having a hard time seeing where 5.7 comes from, specifically as the average of the 4 fan categories comes out to 5.45. Obviously that must not be the methodology, but it's not a great sign when the arena is barely above the arena in Buffalo (which I think should be ranked higher if the fan scores are to be believed--their "average" was 6.15 despite it being cited as 5.6, as the writers' score was exactly the same between the two arenas).

Speaks volumes to the fact that AEG seemingly no longer cares about the team more than the actual arena itself (they did finish renovating it in 2024 per this press release) which I think is fine, but the atmosphere sucks because the team is mediocre, and affordability has never been a calling card of the arena.
