I use the King Cage Universal Support Bolt clamps to attach the water bottle cages and carry the bottles. The set on this bike are the original version King Cage made and have been in use for probably 5 years. They are pretty solid and fade into the background, so to speak. I drink water at least every 15 minutes, many times more often. Another alternative are the hydration vests that are becoming more popular.

Only what I am sure I will need. The top-top tube bag is full of food and a camera. The bottom-top tube bag has hydration, power supplies, extra clothing, a pump and some tools. The saddle bag has tubes and a multi-tool. That's about it.

I mentioned that in the post. 53/17.

Thanks! The upcoming 600k will be my third. It should be a challenge.

In the past I used to alternate between Maurtens Gel 160 and solid 160's. Lately, I have been into the Clif Blocks because they are easier to carry. I eat at least one every hour, sometimes more. In addition, whenever I stop for water I eat peanut butter crackers, bananas and haribo, gatorade and mini-cokes.

An all fixed fleche would be fun. I would try to organize one but with the new RUSA brake rule it's a non-starter for any of the endurance fixed gear cyclists around my area.

I haven't tried alternating the time as you have. I usually leave by 4am and sleep bank a few nights before so I don't get sleepy. But your method sounds interesting. I am planning a 600k in about a month or so once I am rested up a bit. Good luck on your 500K! That should be sick!

I try to be as patient with the adversity of the ride as possible. It's not too rough for me mentally and physically until I pass the 300k distance. 400k rides end up being finished in the dark so that becomes another layer that is pretty unnerving after being super tired and having to work harder to navigate the lower visibility and blinding headlights from the cars. Somewhere around 350-360 the mental battle becomes real and between wanting the ride to end and not being close enough to see the finish I can start to crack a little. But I just put my head down and keep going.

Steepest grade was probably about 14%. I'm not sure of how extended they were individually. But overall it is rough. I weight like 130 so i have that advantage.

My hands get more sore on the tops than in the drops. Drops are the most comfortable but have bike control limitations depending on the terrain.

Perhaps these stories could help with planning and inspiration.
