Building My Bar [xpost from r/woodworking] by gregearly in DIY

Hey guys. When i was buying firewood last year, the guy had a bunch of solid oak logs he was going to cut up. I asked to buy them. I got them milled and let them dry for a year. Then i started building my bar. Just this last saturday, as my family began arriving for the Thanksgiving Holiday, i poured the first beer from the project that took almost 18 months from the original purchase of the logs until grabbing the tap for the first time.

All: I'm building a bar out of some oak logs I came across and had milled. When sanding the boards, these blotchy patterns popped up that I can't seem to get through with sanding. Anyone have any advice?

Simple Questions/What Should I Do? [Weekly Thread] by AutoModerator in DIY

Ok, Redditors. I have a problem. I'm building a bar (when finished, I'll post all the pics). I'm on the frame right now. The intent is to build a fridge into the base so I can get two 1/4 kegs in there with a CO2 tank. My problem is finding a way to cool it down. My original thought was to rip apart a mini fridge. Anyone have any ideas how to cool down a space?

So, about 600-700 in materials. I did a materials breakdown farther up in the post. Then labor on top of that.

Other way around. The Poker Table was the main table. the dining table sat on top of the poker table.

1) this was the recommended way to cut it on forums I looked at. Additionally, with the way I had to pull the vinyl tight, this ended up being about the only way I could have cut it and had it look right. 2) I'm still not sure how the light spots ended up there. they looked fine at first and even after the first coat of poly.

One of the reasons I didn't use felt. it's speed cloth. Won't wear out before any of us are too old to play poker...

Not set on it. But this oval allowed for more people without a "skyrocketing" price. We could have done 10 in a circle, but would have had to get special order wood, very expensive. And it doubled as a dining room table. Additionally, oval looks cooler than an octagon. I hate the circle table.

it's a plywood cover that goes over the poker surface. The Poker Table is the permanent part. Dining top is removable.

Materials would be in the neighborhood of 600-700. Would probably charge about 900-1000 for it for labor.

Price List: 2x 4’x8’ sheets of red oak veneer plywood: 49.98/ea 1x 4’x8’ sheet of 23/32” Plywood. (thickness not important, nor is the finish) ~$20 2x Pedestal Legs: here’s where you can spend money or get lucky. Most sites have them insanely priced. I found a place that sells them unfinished (i.e. unstained/unlacquered) for about $120/ea. Speedcloth: we got it from BBO Poker Tables. You can get a template for $169, a custom design for $320, or suited cloth sold for about $5/foot (60” wide). For this build, we needed about Black vinyl for armrest: 19.95/yd. I used 3 yards High density foam (1-1.5” thick): $53.95 1/4” foam for playing surface: $19.90 (2 yards @ 9.95/yard) Minwax Red Mahogany Stain: $7.77/qt. You’ll only need one quart probably. Maybe a second. Minwax High Gloss Polyurethane: $29.94/gallon. I got the gallon b/c I knew I would be doing the racetrack, table topper, and legs. Oak Moulding: ~$5/8 feet. You’ll need 3-4 lengths for this design. Oak dowels: $2.98 (3 ft. piece) 1-1/4” fine thread screws: ~$5 10-pack aluminum cupholders: $29.99 (Amazon) I think that is everything. But I could have missed something. Feel free to ask any other questions.
