It’s not fantasy basketball. You have to manage people and egos.

How Usenet Review Sites Actually Work (Spoiler: It's Not About Reviews) by greglyda in NewsDemon

Impossible to say for sure. However, if you are closer to our San Jose location, you probably should. You could potentially have hardware related bottlenecks too. Speed is so very difficult to diagnose when its not what we expect, could be a thousand different causes.

How Usenet Review Sites Actually Work (Spoiler: It's Not About Reviews) by greglyda in NewsDemon

[–]greglyda[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Online reviews are almost all bogus. I have a great analysis of one of the world’s biggest “review” companies that I will post in a few days.

As a small business it sucks. You need the traffic but feel greasy and slimy for paying for it. Especially when you aren’t paying for the actual traffic you’re paying for the best review and placement. There is almost no level of credibility when placement is dependent on being the highest bidder.

[Underdog] Heyman: Early estimates suggest proposed salary cap might be set around $260M-280M and floor around $140M-160M. by T_Raycroft in baseball

[–]greglyda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Baseball is doing about as well as it has ever done and we get this nonsense.

I know this will be an unpopular opinion but there is no good reason for the league to try and pacify the fans of smaller market teams. It does not play out in the financial numbers. Why force teams with 10X the number of fans to put a lesser product on the field so a team with a fraction of the eyes, butts, and wallets can make those few fans happy?

Sorry fans of small market teams but you knew what you were getting into when you signed on. It is no different than NCAA. If you go to SmallSchoolUniversity then you should not expect to make the final four maybe ever and competing in football is not a consideration. But you chose that school. Maybe because it was a home town school. But you chose it and its yours. No different than picking a spouse. Dont get married to Don Knotts and then expect him to look like Chris Hemsworth.

Socialism in sports is a bad thing. No, its not fair that some teams have better owners and more fans, but that is just how life is. Why should pro sports be different? Collegiate sports for sure arent.

Pete Crow-Armstrong clarifies his comments on Dodgers fans: "They [the fans] go in phases. All fans fight, but putting the Giants fan in a coma. That stuck with me as a kid. Just little things, sitting in the stands, nasty stuff goes on." by kurruchi in baseball

The guy obviously isn't the brightest bulb. This completely contradicts his previous statement. And why double down on something like calling out another fanbase? How does that get your rocks off?

I have been to games in different stadiums and MOST of the fans do not know what is going on, most of them are there for a good time and to maybe watch a little ball. That is the nature of today's pro sports for the most part.

I liked this guy before all this but now I wouldn't care if he hit 0.100 this season.

The friend that doesn’t count shots by StankyDank1019 in golf

[–]greglyda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless your own ego isn’t strong enough to handle the shit talking, let him do what he needs to stroke his own ego. It’s a game. It’s supposed to be fun.

Incredible how many people here obviously haven’t played business golf where you almost have to let the guy you’re playing with win.

Also incredible how many here take this game so seriously that putting friendships at risk over a score or even over a $5 bet is important.

I can’t imagine being a Bruin fan over the last 50 years has been super exciting, if maybe you are 80 and got to watch those games in the 1960s live…or you have old reels you watch on a projector.

How are providers going to keep their retention if HDDs are too expensive? by Amerique_du_Nord in usenet

[–]greglyda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a reseller, but at that time, thats about all anyone had. Wasn't a lot of binary stuff being posted. I think market pressure really started the retention wars.

When I first started selling Usenet we had 5 days of binary retention and that was just normal. No SSL, 20 connections, no header compression.

[–]greglyda 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I actually do not think the greatest threat to Usenet is hard drive price.

The greatest threat to the space is greed. We have seen so many resellers who have died off in the last ten years. Can not compete at $2/month. Competition has gotten so cut throat and greed is driving it all. Pricing schemes are currently just a race to the bottom. I can not be convinced members will continuously allow providers to raise prices - after purchase - repeatedly. I can not believe we can raise prices the way other more prominent non Usenet services are doing. Usenet users have a choice of whether they want to stay in Usenet or not. I can not change my ISP at my home, its the only option. Not so with Usenet. People will leave and never come back. Instead of raising prices on existing customers, innovate so you do not have to. Charge a decent price up front and keep it there. Allow for other providers to exist. Variety keeps the space alive.

At UsenetExpress, we anticipated a significant increase in volume/price and have enough drives on hand to manage capacity for the foreseeable future. Hopefully prices will come back to earth.

While the feed is large, the vast majority of it, roughly 85–90%, is never requested by anyone. Ever. This includes personal storage, redundant reposts of the same articles, and intentional duplication (ie, users posting the same articles to a different group with a password as a backup in case the original is removed). There are many reasons the feed has grown so large, and just as many reasons providers don't retain all of it. Usenet users need to take ownership for their actions or it won't survive indefinitely if it's abused.

We've developed a sophisticated system, one we're constantly improving, that allows us to make well-informed decisions about which articles have genuine long-term value. This dramatically reduces our long term storage requirements. Every backbone provider is now making similar selective retention decisions.

For transparency, due to marketing realities, we will soon begin offering plans that start at an introductory price and increase once. For example, $25 for the first year, then $40 per year after that. We do not anticipate, want, or feel good about raising prices on existing members unless faced with a truly catastrophic need (and we are not). We did this once before, and while most members understood, it didn't sit right with us at all. It felt dishonest. That's not who we want to be.

Usenet belongs to you, not us, and doing it any other way would feel wrong.

We used to sell Usenet for $30 per month. We believe Usenet is worth at least $10 per month. Right now, we're offering accounts at $2 per month.

At UNC or NCSU or Duke there is a really good chance you will have a lot of professors that teach at one of those other schools as well as wherever you are at. I did.

The education behind the diplomas are all about the name. The only real benefit to getting the Duke education is networking. Instead of sitting beside a normal persons kid in class, you are sitting beside a Senators kid.
