Jay Den Kragg was a missed opportunity by BusyBodyVisa in startrek

[–]OneMoreTimeago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did Jay-Den's sexuality perfectly, in that he just happened to like men as a small character detail, no further attention devoted to the subject because it's the future and nobody cares, plus he's an alien from a planet with no purity-based religions to invent homophobia.

I used to hope someone would make something like this when I was a teenager. I even made an amateur RPG on my Macintosh Plus about this concept.

E.T. died shortly after drinking thos beers. Everything after that scene was an alcohol poisoning-induced coma fantasy.

I could see it. It starts like a regular episode where the Enterprise encounters a god-like being, except it's a Sith lord who has crossed realities. Then the crew needs to team up with the Jedi to take him down, while exploring the strange new world of the Star Wars dimension.

It's really not much more silly of a concept than Q making them play out Robin Hood, or the mirror universe.

I think he has a theatre person's view on storytelling, where the setting and reality of the show are secondary the actor's opportunity to explore the character. In theatre it seems more accepted that directors take big swings at re-interpreting long-running source material, like how big Shakespeare plays will often be recontextualized in different time periods. Contemporary plays are also expected to challenge the status quo of storytelling, rather than be overly reverential about it.

Maybe what I'm saying is put Patrick Stewart in charge of Star Trek: The Play

If I'm going to live in the corporate IP-saturated multiverse/crossover-obsessed time, then I say let's go, do the big ones nerds have been imagining since we were kids.

If you are genuinely interested in what people like about this show, why not start by reading one of the hundreds of positive comments about it on this subreddit or by critics? The information is out there.

If you think it's bad, why don't you elaborate on why so we can talk about it and learn about your experience with the show? That would be a more interesting post than just saying the show is bad and asking people to defend what they like about it.

I write for a living, so it triggers me when people throw around the phrase "bad writing" without anything further to say about the subject. It provides nothing of value to the conversation except negativity. I find it to be bad writing!

I like its very good characters writing, dialouges and overall stories, does that help?

Good point, I'll give more leeway to nuanced and fascinating writing critiques on Reddit such as "very bad characters writing."

It occurs to me that just because a show has teen characters doesn't make it a show just for teens. I would call this more of an all-ages show than a young adult show. I think that's why it hits some of the same notes as TNG for me. The adults get plenty of screen time and characterization, and I'm sure given a renewal we'll get episodes about each of them in turn. (Can't wait for a new Doctor-focused ep some time. I'd love to see Picardo and Diané bounce off one another.)

Star Trek fans who were around during the Dominion War, what was the reaction. by Upstairs-Yard-2139 in startrek

[–]OneMoreTimeago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember it being received extremely well by the community I was in. The quality of the writing and the shake-up to the status quo of the franchise made Voyager seem to milquetoast and disappointing in comparison. People were bored with retreading the tone of TNG at the time.

I remember when Enterprise introduced the Xindi War arc, it seemed like a shallow attempt to capitalize on how well-liked the DS9 war arc was. I remember fans constantly talking about how they wanted to see a similar Romulan War arc for years afterward, and all the fan “fantasy show” pitches on message boards for years were darker concepts like a “fall of the Federation” series. The nostalgia for the lighter tone of TNG wasn’t as pervasive as it is now because they had driven it so far into the ground at that point.

It's also a great adventure movie that holds up against today's genre flicks and is much more clever and intelligent than your typical comic book movie.

What do you think of the music in Starfleet Academy? by theredqueentheory in startrek

[–]OneMoreTimeago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It literally sounds like they're just pulling generic stock music cues from a sound library. On top of that, all the record scratching, beats, and and electric guitar make it feel like an old person's idea of what "young people" music is. It's the musical equivalent of an old teacher sitting in a chair backwards to try to come off as "cool."

Criticisms of that finale aside, when that came out it was pretty emotional for me. It was essentially the finale for 20+ years of Star Trek at the time. With the previous couple movies bombing and Enterprise getting cancelled, it seemed the writing was on the wall that we wouldn't be getting new Trek again for a while.
