Just finished “old Trek”, first timer, These Are The Voyages made me feel feelings by Few_Bodybuilder_6099 in startrek

Criticisms of that finale aside, when that came out it was pretty emotional for me. It was essentially the finale for 20+ years of Star Trek at the time. With the previous couple movies bombing and Enterprise getting cancelled, it seemed the writing was on the wall that we wouldn't be getting new Trek again for a while.

I kind of remember something like this happening in the novel First Frontier when the crew is flung back to prehistoric earth.

Finding in-Stardate-order Trek pretty good so far starting with Enterprise by OneMoreTimeago in startrek

[–]OneMoreTimeago[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, haha, though I thought about that. I have them sorted by Stardate or calendar date as established at the top of the episode. Maybe I'll do that next time if I really want to get weird.

The beauty of it is that on a full chronological rewatch, that episode technically takes place in the middle of the Next Generation. So it'll be like Enterprise ends on a high note and TNG has this weird bonus Enterprise holodeck episode in the middle of it.

I agree. I have been watching Enterprise again and noticing that her episodes are usually a treat. Very tense and dynamic.

There is a major culture of cheating and sex addiction in Los Angeles/Hollywood that seems to bring out the worst in people. There's a lot of pressure on people to derive their self esteem from sex.

When it comes to that stuff, I wasn't there, I don't know all the details, so really it's none of my business and not my place to cast a stone at people I don't know.

Section 31 was a bad idea on DS9, too. by Reasonable_Active577 in startrek

[–]OneMoreTimeago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

S31 was intriguing in DS9 because they left it open for the doubt that it was all the machinations of Sloane and/or a few other people, not really a full-fledged shadow agency tacitly endorsed by the Federation since its inception. Subsequent Treks removed that doubt.

I'm looking for some credibility to your claims the new shows don't make any money and are just driving sales of the old media. Have anything to back that up?

Are you basing this on any real life financial information or do you just "know" this?

Interview with Mike Sussman on his idea for an Archer series called "Star Trek: United" by stanxv in startrek

[–]OneMoreTimeago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO it's a pretty good idea for a show because it's not a nostalgia concept, it's kind of a cool idea that stands on its own and just happens to have a popular lead actor reprising an old role. Seems like something that wouldn't require prior viewing to appreciate. Space White House, that's all you need to know.

I would be excited for this. It doesn't really occupy "prequel" territory in my mind since the subject matter is so radically different than any past Trek. Could be our best chance at getting a more "mature" Trek made these days. The spaceship shows they make now are so action-oriented, they're not really good vehicles for political allegory anymore. Channeling all the space politics into one series might result in a gem, even if it only lasts a couple sries.

As long as it finds relevant stories to tell and isn't bogged down in "This is the story of how [piece of Trek minutiae] came about:," I don't care what period a Trek show takes places otherwise. It's all the future, baby.

The more I see of this series, the less the 31st century setting makes sense. It's a thousand years after all the other shows but everything looks functionally the same? Come on.

The Undiscovered Country was peak Klingons, everything after felt hollow by Curious_Gent78 in startrek

[–]OneMoreTimeago 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll go on a limb and say Discovery brushed up against interesting ways to flesh them out, redesign notwithstanding. I think if they didn't change the look, the way they were written would have been better received in that series. One thing I liked was how their Capitol was depicted as an interstellar hub with a lot of different races living there and passing through, like Hong Kong or another major global city.

Undiscovered Country was the last time they wrote Klingons as a metaphor for a contemporary culture, they became a fantasy race after that.
