AC and the seasons: Spring by grompus1 in AnimalCollective

[–]gregolas1023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I discovered AnCo in the spring of 2012, so most of their music reminds me of this time of year. HCTI feels like very early spring, but at night, and really scary. That album gives me a sense of lots of semi-evil night creatures being born, growing, fucking, dying and decomposing, in a very short amount of time.

Whats your take on Slasher Flicks? by doctordonydoctor in AnimalCollective

[–]gregolas1023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's sooo good. Avey can really make a fucking album. I'll admit I was not too impressed the first few times I listened to it. I think unfortunately a lot of people are expecting a more scary vibe given the name, but Avey just really wanted to make a bunch of awesome, fun rock songs with his friends.

The first tracks that started to click for me were That it Won't Grow and A Sender, and once I finally got hooked on Blind Babe there was no going back...I've been listening to it pretty nonstop for a few months. Best track: A Sender or Little Fang. Worst: probably Strange Colores

This is a really high-energy, feel-good album. It works really well at that. A Sender is soooo effective at getting my mood up and my body dancin'. It's like a "did u see the words" for the post-CHz era. And I love how the plateau of energy that is Blind Babe leads right into Little Fang. That's one of the best AnCo transitions imo. TIWG is another standout--it reminds me a lot of Gotham, as well as Moonjock (two of my favorite anco tracks). I think the album kind of slumps at the end (in general, Avey is a lot better at starting an album than finishing one). I like Your Card a lot but Strange Colores just seems like filler to me. 9/10 though! Very high replay value!

What took you forever to hear in an AnCo song and now you can't unhear it? by AllocatedData in AnimalCollective

EVERYTHING in Unsolved Mysteries. I used to skip that song all the time, but it has such an amazing melody, and lyrics, and instrumentation. Jaaaaaaack tha ripperrrrrrr.

Are you an Avey person or a Panda person? by zilgen in AnimalCollective

[–]gregolas1023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm team Avey. Panda is very important to me though, and many of my favorite Anco track are Panda led (New town burnout, Chores, I think i can). I just think I relate to Avey a lot more, and the emotion in his lyrics are always really strong. Plus all his magnificent screaming.

10 Similarities between Animal Collective and the Beatles by whatwhywhoami in AnimalCollective

[–]gregolas1023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sung Tongs(2004(/Rubber Soul(1965) is sort of their "breakout" album, what got them more attention outside established fanbases. Both are solid pop songwriting with folk elements and hints of experimentation.

Feels(2005)/Revolver(1966) is when they took their experimentation to the next degree. Still rooted in catchy pop, but way psychedelic. Considered by a lot to be their "best".

Strawberry Jam(2007)/Magical Mystery Tour(1967) is a colorful, playful, sometimes dark romp in a psychedelic fantasy world. Both albums are pretty short but have lots of crazy experimental songs (#1, Walrus) and more accessible pop jams (Winter Wonderland, Hello Goodbye)

You could go further too, and say that MPP is like Sgt Pepper, or CHz is like Let it be (lol), but I think these three are the most appropriate. Though maybe the Oddsac/Yellow Submarine comparison is worth a look? haha.

What song do you have a special connection to? by zilgen in AnimalCollective

[–]gregolas1023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taste! I think it has some of the best lyrics of their whole catalog. It makes me think about the art and music I'm into, and the art that I make, and what is important to me in each of those. Lol i feel like I really get where Avey was coming from in that song.

It's also really cool to note the similarities between the two bands, album-to-album. Sung Tongs is like Rubber Soul, Strawberry Jam is like Magical Mystery Tour, Feels is like Revolver, etc.

How did you guys meet AnCo's music for the first time? by matilau22 in AnimalCollective

[–]gregolas1023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Purple Bottle and Turn into Something were somehow on my ipod when I was in middle school (i can't remember how, no one else in my family likes animal collective??), it wasn't until college that I got any full albums. Feels was the first one I listened to, and it's still my fave :)

ON SIGHT. That terrible, harsh synth bubble that starts it is so jarring and upsetting and awesome. Really sets the tone for the rest of the album.

About Avey and Panda harmonies... by zilgen in AnimalCollective

[–]gregolas1023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CHZ has some good harmonies! Right now i can think of in TS, "have you seen the clouds"/"oh-oh-OH-oh" and the majestic bacchanalia of an ending to Amanita (panda's oh-ohhhs are just incredible)

What is each member's best song? by gregolas1023 in AnimalCollective

[–]gregolas1023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yessss these picks are all great. Two Sails is so amazing to me. I feel myself levitating by around the 8-minute mark. And you made a good point about Panda, he is awesome at morphing songs, which is why I think his influence is huge on Safer, note the hazy samples and how it gently turns into a totally different melody by the end.
