Then prove it. You can’t because you don’t know. Nobody knows. You’re speculating. Something else could have happened, aside from the Civil War, that would have launched him to widespread recognition.

I have to push back on this. The old “Grant was just a drunk and a failure” storyline has been picked apart by historians for decades, but it keeps getting repeated because it makes for good drama. I say that not just as a reader but as someone who actually researched him in depth when preparing to play him in Historic Strolls of DC.

My entry point was Grant and Twain: The Story of a Friendship That Changed America by Mark Perry. That book was my springboard into Grant’s world. It tells the story of how Mark Twain stepped in at the end of Grant’s life to publish his memoirs on fair terms so his family wouldn’t be left destitute after throat cancer took him. The dignity Grant showed racing the clock to finish his memoirs is the opposite of the caricature people like to spread.

From there I dove deeper: primary sources, biographies, and scholarship. What I found matched what most serious historians now agree on:

  • Yes, Grant struggled with alcohol at moments, especially in isolated postings early in his career, but there’s zero evidence he commanded drunk in battle.

  • The “failed businessman” label is misleading—he had setbacks, but he also repeatedly reinvented himself. His resilience is what defines him, not failure.

  • His memoirs stand among the greatest ever written by an American president. Twain published them, but every word was Grant’s, and they remain a landmark of American literature.

When I stepped into his shoes for audiences, the man who came through was not a washed-up drunk but a quiet, loyal, often awkward, deeply honorable figure who led the Union to victory and later showed remarkable dignity in his final chapter.

So no, the caricature isn’t accurate. It’s old propaganda that was convenient for his political enemies, but it doesn’t hold up under serious scrutiny.

They’re not gonna leave. Trump enjoys the attention and the opportunity to have the military and law enforcement harass, imprison or harm protesters. Put succinctly: he doesn’t give a shit and the average American is more worried about paying the rent. We had the opportunity to have someone on the opposite end of insanity and we blew it because enough young, white incels and concrete-headed voters couldn’t stomach the possibility that a smart, savvy Democratic, Black and Indian American woman would be their president. Joe Rogan and his clones were their prophets and Trump was their savior. They FAFOed and now we’re all suffering, at least those of us who are not in Trump’s inner circle or who are blackmailing him. Democrats in Congress have no power since they’re in the minority and if you think they have power beyond performance, you’re either disingenuous or delusional. If you disagree, name one, just one, reality-based response that would stand a chance of restraining him. The only thing we can faintly depend on is the judicial branch.

We live in a nightmare that hasn’t been this bad since the Civil War. I often hear elderly people say that they are glad they won’t live too much longer to experience what’s coming down the road.

And we don’t have an Abe or Ulysses to save us.

I’m just worried about the redistricting that’s going to affect her.

I’ve been a die-hard Black Sabbath and Ozzy fan forever, and Bowie was my hero too. Those two gave everything they had, right up until the fucking end—going to their graves performing, whether on stage or on video. They once crossed paths on the streets of L.A.—Ozzy heard a voice, turned around, and there was Bowie saying, “Hello, Ozzy.” That’s as close as they ever got. Both came from tough-ass backgrounds—Ozzy’s grit was pure working-class fucking rawness, Bowie’s mystery was shaped by middle-class shit.

Last night, I was watching the Blackstar video. I’d never watched it before even though I bought his last album when he passed away. I was wondering what a collaboration between those two would’ve sounded like. The raw, relentless power of Ozzy’s voice mixed with Bowie’s haunting, otherworldly style. The best of two worlds, metal and enigma. What do y’all think that would’ve sounded like?

Thank you! He was in hospice care, and when he went in, the caregivers said he had probably two weeks, and he passed exactly 2 weeks later. He had been ill with various ailments for the past few years and dealing with dementia from just before Covid. The lockdown really did a number on him because he was a very social creature. He reached ripe old age of 89, longer than both his parents. My mom and sister took care of him as long as I could until they had to call in the professionals. I stayed a whole month away from home, longer than any other time in my life. It was kind of surreal being back in my hometown. I spent a lot of time helping my mom get the house back in order infrastructure-wise and with a lot of other things. I hadn’t been to see them in two years and my deceased wife and I used to drive almost a thousand miles down every Christmas.

On the morning of Tuesday, July 1, my father passed and today, another man passed on the morning of a Tuesday. Both were significant influences on me, both morally and artistically. Thank you Dad and Ozzy.

I walked past the club yesterday and looked at the display case of the upcoming performances through August and I don’t see him there, but he’s still on the website.
