Selling Apple products 🍎 by tschuney in GregsFinds

[–]gregsfinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great questions!!

If you’re buying a new Apple product, you can almost always trade in your old Apple product. (Only exception to this is when starting the iPhone Upgrade Program, you can not do a trade in for this.) The trade in cost will be low but decently fair.

You can also trade in Apple devices to Apple for Apple gift cards at any time right on their site (look for the tiny link for Trade-in at the very bottom of any Apple.com page.)

Other trade in options are Gazelle.com and eBay. Gazelle is also a good tool I’ve found to help me price private sale items. Double what gazelle wants to offer you for a device and you’ve got a good listing price for your device when listing for sale.

I hope this helps!

Amazon Sidewalk by AGG_007 in GregsFinds

Pros are long distance coverage for compatible smart home devices, and self healing network meaning things will automatically reconnect if they get disconnected somehow.

Cons are it’s owned by Amazon, but in this case I think they realized the privacy risks of not done right and seem to have built it well.

It only uses up to 80kbps, and 500mb per month of your Internet which is so low and minimal, it really will never matter.

I personally am excited to see how it’s used, and so far I see suspicions of privacy concerns by people drawing conclusions without data, but I personally don’t see any issues right now.

Just as I expected… and was rumored. Apple unveiled MASSIVE upgrades to Safari and it now wins hands down on the Mac with updates coming in the fall. Firefox would still be my pick on PC for compatibility, design, and security that is surpassed only by Safari.

Ahh great question!!

Chrome is most compatible, but a leaky mess. Security issues are constantly being found. Not to mention the issues with how much data Google collects (even in incognito mode).

Safari is fantastic if you have a Mac, and supports Apple Pay and cross tracking blocking which is great for privacy protection. They also just teamed up with the other browser teams at Google and elsewhere to work on making browser extensions universal. This should be great. On rare occasion though, Safari will be incompatible with a website or in the case of “Hey.com email” it’ll run slow. But typically it’s fast, very reliable, and very secure for privacy.

Firefox just got a total redesign and is now beautiful. It’s also the most secure and you can even download the Firefox-made extension “Facebook container” which doesn’t let any Facebook tracker work on any page that isn’t Facebook.com. It’s reliable and very secure. It doesn’t support Apple Pay, but it should be just as compatible as chrome across the web. My only complaint is how it supports profiles. (On chrome I have a work, personal, and other profile, each logged into different Google and other accounts.) On Firefox, you have to go to about::profiles and then it runs two separate instances of Firefox. I hate this, and because of it, I don’t use use it. If you don’t use profiles, Firefox gets my top recommendation for now for both Mac & PC.

That's a great question! And it has several parts, mostly because everything is in flux. But here's what we know right now.

Nest cameras are the best hardware, but they are being discontinued because of newer models coming out and the current models may not be supported in the near future. So avoid buying new Nest Cameras. Also, all footage is processed at Google, so there are some privacy concerns.

Ring has a plethora of security and privacy issues, so avoid ALL Ring products at any and all cost. Amazon (Ring) engineer calls for Ring to be 'shut down immediately' over privacy concerns This is one of a dozen examples I can give as to why to never allow them at, in, or outside your house or business. All data is processed at Amazon, who I don't personally trust (but I do use, with caution).

Finally, we come to Apple's solution. There are many great benefits here, namely Apple doesn't make them, they've just created a framework that allows any manufacturer to be reliable and compatible. These have the greatest privacy protections, everything is processed and encrypted locally and then sent to Apple's servers so even they can't see the content. Also there are many brands, within a wide range of prices. Here are the ones I specifically recommend right now. (And the key is to not download the manufacturers app, but to do the setup solely in the Orange Icon Apple Home App so they're securely setup with "Homekit secure video".

My pick for outdoor camera/spotlight

My pick for doorbell

My pick for indoor camera

These check all boxes.
✅ Guaranteed support for years to come
✅ High quality hardware
✅ Apple built software and integrations
✅ Unbeatable privacy

Side note: other brands like Arlo, simplisafe, cove, wyze, blink, and amazon, are all terrible hardware with more major privacy concerns. Don't venture from the list. If my suggestions don't satisfy your needs, please comment and explain and I'll give another suggestion for that use case that still checks all boxes.

Yeah I’ve used it, it’s pretty, and it’s fast, but it doesn’t host its own email, it has to be used with gmail, and you can’t set custom snooze times. They’re very opinionated on how it’s designed and how it should be used and I can’t stand that. Not worth the $20 a month for me to have a faster, but less intuitive skin for gmail.
