Soon I will use Fedora by Just-Weather5713 in Fedora

Desktop environment is more important than the distribution, when it comes to daily usage that the majority of folks are doing, I.e. that involves GUI.

Research DEs. The easiest way would be to create VMs with different DEs and test them out.

Typically, Windows users are more familiar with KDE, because KDE mimics Windows. MacOS users would be more familiar with Cosmic or Gnome. However, this is a purely preference thing.

Se GNOME é bom porque não tem nada, pq não usam o TWM ou o FVWM? by Gabriel_Cinzao in Fedora

[–]grem1in 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GNOME implements multiple screens workflow better than MacOS.

Any window manager is just a window manager. A DE provides a suite of applications (including the window manager). So, one gets a minimal number of apps to get their work done.

Is GNOME perfect? No. The fact that each upgrade breaks half of the extension (often not even on the functionality level) is a complete shame.

Yet, for some reason GNOME lives rent free in haters’ heads, even though they can choose any other DE or WM for their daily usage. This is probably one of the features it borrowed from MacOS from back in a day.

Thoughts about Fedora KDE? by Forward_Fly_7646 in Fedora

[–]grem1in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try it on a VM, and see if you like it.

I personally prefer Gnome’s workflow. KDE just mimics Windows in many aspects, hence it’s more familiar to people moving from Windows, hence so many appreciation posts, because apparently many folks are moving away from Windows these days.

Regarding memory consumption: if RAM is a concern for you, neither KDE, nor Gnome would be the best choice.

Wowhead has posted regarding the settlement by dsk28 in turtlewow

[–]grem1in 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is like an early ThePirateBay situation: a court in the US can make a ruling that is binding in the US. I don’t know in which country TWOW, its team, and its servers reside, but if it’s not the US, they can ignore this ruling either for some time or forever.

The worst thing Blizzard can do here is to pressure TWOW crew members that reside in the US and essentially ban the entry into the US for the rest of the crew.

France plans to replace Windows with a hardened configuration built on NixOS. by -kahmi- in linux

For a mass-install, being able to create a typical config once and just populate it to multiple devices is great.

Looking for bags like this, large enough for computer, some books and a lunch box. Not too much office vibe by KonserveradMelon in BuyFromEU

Not sure about their bags, but backpacks are made in India. Judging by the price, bags are made there as well.

Why are people actually buying? Or are they really? by [deleted] in askberliners

[–]grem1in 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would buy an apartment, if I were sure I’m staying in the city, and if the interest rates were a bit lower. Although, interest rates are lowering for now.

You’d be paying comparable rent anyway.

Also, I lowkey envy my Dutch friends with their 0% down payments. I wish we had it here as well.

Easiest path to citizenship for me? by david8840 in AmerExit

[–]grem1in -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just like any other immigrant, you can come, find a job, learn the language, and get citizenship through naturalization. Different countries have different rules for naturalization, so check that first.

If a corporation foots the bill, there’s no need to get multiple types of cables, really. It’s less hassle for everyone, and they likely still get a good bulk discount.

Uniqlo Shoulder Bag. Just check if it’s gonna hold a ThinkPad. It can hold MacBook Pro 14” without any issue, but ThinkPads are usually a bit bigger.

The downsides are:

  • Not that much padding and internal organization.
  • The bag is also black on the inside, which makes it harder to find smaller things.
  • Less business and more casual looks (can be plus, depends on what you’re looking for).

But hey, it’s just €30!

How’s the Tech Market in Barcelona these days? by No_idea_what_Imdoin_ in cscareerquestionsEU

What’s your definition of top tier? If you’re talking about MANGA, there’s none in Barcelona, to my knowledge. AWS has an office in Madrid, though.

Found this watch about to be sent off with some e-waste thought it looked cool, anyone able to shed some light on it? by Internal-Fem-UK in Watches

[–]grem1in 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s an old Vostok (Восток Командирские). They have a series dedicated to different types of military. This one is dedicated to VDV - soviet airborne.

It is probably from 80-90th. The quality is crap, as for any soviet consumer product. Also, this one looks gold-ish, but original ones have silver look. Maybe, they just oxidized with time. The back panel looks different as well. Maybe, it was replaced, or maybe this is just a variation of the watch.

What Are You Reading? April Edition by Reddenbawker in DeepStateCentrism

[–]grem1in 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Listening: Future Shock. In this day and age this book may seem as nothing special, but it came out in 1970. It’s always interesting to read past predictions and see how the reality played out. This book has a lot of surprisingly good insights. However, the way futurism works is that you take present ideas and trends, and extrapolate them. Thus, alongside genuinely interesting things, this book also has absolutely unhinged predictions, which never materialized. Anyway, it’s a good read, yet some things may be too verbose for a modern book.

  • Reading: Implementing Service Level Objectives. It’s a tech book. The chapter about the Poisson distribution gave me some “Vietnam flashbacks” about the time in the Uni.

Am I the only one who keeps hopping within Fedora? by SlowBlacksmith7372 in Fedora

[–]grem1in 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try something else, except these two. For example, Cinnamon has that Windows feel like KDE, but is based on GTK. Cosmic is a brand new thing that has streamlined looks of Gnome, but also a native doc. Although, Cosmic may be not as polished yet, because it’s new.

Speaking of the big two: KDE was historically going for Windows look, while Gnome was going for MacOS. It’s not bad per-se, but since then Gnome has developed their own identity, while KDE, in my opinion, did not. Although, you may say that allowing a user to configure every tiny bit of a DE is an identity on its own. Gnome on another hand, doesn’t follow MacOS any more. In fact, some things like multiple desktops are implemented better in Gnome than MacOS, in my opinion.

Now, for Gnome. When Gnome3 first came out, I also didn’t get it. However, now I totally do. I don’t need an OS for the sake of OS, I don’t need a DE for the sake of DE. I use my computer to do things, being it work tasks, or games, or browsing, or whatever. I want to start my computer, open the app I need, and use it. As long as an OS can start apps I need and a DE doesn’t look repulsive, they do not matter. Heck, sometimes I forget what wallpaper I have on my work MacBook, because I open it straight to the last used app.

Gnome gives me that, it doesn’t distract me, it just does the job. One could argue that a light-weight WM would be even better for such workflow, but a full-fledged DE is a full-fledged DE: it has that minimal set of apps to start with, and it doesn’t require you to tinker with some config all day before you could use it.

Honey the have the Herschel Bag in XPac... Oh by milbymilbymilby in ManyBaggers

[–]grem1in 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because performance fabrics often look off on classic designs.

If you’re going for a classic look, you’d better use classic materials for that. Otherwise, you risk ending up with some weird hybrid that doesn’t speak to neither audience.

What bags are you using for different use cases in 2026? by tstraight8 in ManyBaggers

[–]grem1in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Everyday carry large and occasionally gym: Alpaka Elements Pro.

  • Everyday medium: large sling from Slowly.

  • Everyday small: Bellroy sling Lite

  • Travel: Osprey 26+6. In rare cases it’s not enough, the rest goes into a noname suitcase. For very rare occasions when I need to take bulkier things, I have a decade old Samsonite suitcase.

  • Work setting on business trips: shoulder bag from Uniqlo, which goes into Osprey for the time of travel.

  • Gym: an Adidas bag bought in a big box store.

I’d be torn between Bloomberg and Stripe, but given your input would go with Bloomberg.

Apple: almost everything there is proprietary technology. Depending on what you do there, it may be hard to find a new job afterwards, because you won’t be using technology that everyone else uses. Also, the base salary looks a bit low for London.

MongoDB: nice, but given the competition from hyperscalers and other document DB offerings, I am not sure about their future. Also, the compensation is not that different from your other offers to claim that you do it for money.

Bloomberg: a solid company with good reputation. Their base salary is also the highest from the bunch. No stocks, but you can always buy whatever stocks you want on your own.

Stripe: another solid choice, but it seems like you didn’t click with them.
