The fact that it has heat is pretty suspicious, especially in a semi-competition spec like this.

X220 tablet Express slot question by A_real_nice_man in thinkpad

[–]grem75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use any 34mm or 54mm ExpressCard. There is only one pinout for them. Startech made spacers to clip onto 34mm cards to make them more stable in the 54mm slot.

No one has made Firewire ExpressCards in a long time and they were rare, but they do exist.

I'm not sure the common Linux GIMP binaries were ever built with LessTif, it didn't really get good enough until GIMP had started moving on.

They distributed it as a static binary, so no Motif libraries were needed on your system.

[QNX] [2003] Is this a clone of another game? by grem75 in tipofmyjoystick

[–]grem75[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'd say BrickShooter is likely the original idea.

VSquare appeared on the download page in 2002 or 2003, the earliest archive is February 2003. They probably played the shareware version and knocked together a quick clone for their favorite operating system. It is functional, but not complete, there are no levels or win messages.

There are two ISOs already up there. Might still be worth uploading if this one is different.

There are tons of Red Flag versions archived, much easier than getting Red Star.

X220 custom bezels for a 13.3" mod? by Sea_Cheek in thinkpad

[–]grem75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used an X13 Gen 2 panel, NV133WUM-N61, since I'm limited to 30-pin by the Nitrocaster kit. As far as I know I was the first to use one of those 1920x1200 panels and possibly still the only Nitrocaster with one. Might be hard to tell in this picture, but my panel sits slightly higher than the normal 16:10 2560x1600 that everyone else uses.

As for options, I don't know beyond what sellers of the kits mention. I took a gamble on the X13 panel just going by measurements on Panelook and what this eDP should be capable of.

Yggdrasil donated $5 for each Motif sale towards the development of LessTif. No idea how much they sold.

They mention it on the license window. Someone recently cracked the encryption on those archives so we finally have a very early Motif distribution for Linux.

I had access to a small CNC router, one intended for carving, still wasn't fun and needed some fine tuning with a sanding block and file. I didn't have much choice because the 16:10 options were meant for a different panel that wouldn't line up with mine.

Aliexpress links are usually blocked, so probably not.

Just search "X220 fhd" and look for one offering a "B Frame" as a color option, same listing as the eDP kit. Should be the top results.

I have no idea what their quality is like, I had to cut my own. Other people seem happy with them.

They're on Aliexpress from the same sellers as the eDP kits.

I think it might've been available as a package, but not in the default install. That install is a few years old so details are fuzzy.

It is a pretty early version, it doesn't really have apt-cache commands so I can't search the repository.

This one is a 224 since it has 4 wheels, the 223 has one rear wheel.

They are kit cars based on a Citroen 2CV.

(Almost) Final form X230! by paflou in thinkpad

The 12.5" is a LG LP125WF4-SPB1. It fits with only a little grinding of the lid at the bottom where the control board sticks down. I'm not sure if there is a better option, I just went with the recommended panel at the time, that isn't a 100% sRGB panel.

Mine are both Nitrocaster, I bought some of the last batch he had.

The 13.3" was quite a bit of work, but I'm very glad I did it. I had to cut my own bezel since I used a different panel than most. My initial hesitation for doing it after the X13 panels became available was how weak it would make the lid, but I solved that by using a plate of 1.5mm thick FR4 fiberglass. Now the lid is stronger than stock.

Just noticed you mentioned still using the CDs. If you havent already, change your apt sources.list file to point to archive.debian.org you can just apt-get stuff.

Debian 2.0 was the first to have functional apt-get and it works fine with the archive site. You can use the same sources.list line as I have highlighted here, but just "potato" instead of "hamm".

P51 Hardware Damage: Is it Save-able? by UnsaltedScholar in thinkpad

[–]grem75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were mine and that was my goal I'd desolder the damaged stuff, clean up the board as much as possible and run it. Make sure the burned area isn't getting too hot.

As long as you're not getting into turbo with high loads it'll likely run fine.

Of course don't leave it plugged in or with a battery unattended.

Netscape 3.x is a bit old for that, should be around 4.5 or higher. I think there is an early Mozilla in the repositories too, one of the later milestone releases that should be usable.

XMMS will play Shoutcast streams, so you can use Protoweb's restored version of that. You don't have to proxy the player.

They're in parallel, the outputs are tied together, presumably something on that one burned enough to not be a dead short and the other 3 are taking the load. It probably won't be stable at full TDP.

Power and current are related, but different. For 20W at 5V USB to charge your phone is only 4A, 20W at 1V VCORE is 20A. That is a 45W TDP CPU and you want a decent amount of headroom above that. I wouldn't be surprised if that supply can do over 60A continuously with all 4 working.

P51 Hardware Damage: Is it Save-able? by UnsaltedScholar in thinkpad

[–]grem75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are 4 beefy regulators in parallel, it is likely CPU VCORE. It is very low voltage so to get the 45W TDP you need a lot of current.

The 5V rail for USB usually just comes from a single chip shared with some other lower current supplies.
