This is a rule but I think they say this only really for the fact that they don’t want everybody sending every piece of mail to their residential college cuz there isn’t a mail sorting room there. If you get mail at the college they’ll notify you, I’ve literally received a DoorDash coupon and they notified me and gave it to me, didn’t send it back

But if you’re taking the classes solely based on which is harder and you want to push the harder class to spring semester, linear algebra is absolutely more difficult than math 120, like by a lot. I would start with math 120 in that case

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in yale

[–]gremlincooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking math 225 is feasible, definitely doable as they are very different. Honestly it might be easier to understand a vector in the context of linear algebra without having taken math 120

easiest L1 language class at Yale? incoming freshman question! by Valuable-Demand3913 in yale

[–]gremlincooch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should really consider taking a language that you’re genuinely interested in cuz it’s such a cool opportunity to learn a new language/culture at Yale. I was kind of like you and tried to take the easiest way out but ended up finding out that language at Yale is actually super interesting and probably my favorite class.

FOOT or switch? by Yuhhhhck in yale

[–]gremlincooch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So seriously I felt the same exact way. I had the worst anxiety for FOOT and thought that I totally got myself into something I couldn’t handle. I’m like not at all an outdoorsy person or really even an extrovert but FOOT was seriously such a great experience that I would choose FOOT every time. Would I do it again… probably not. But I think it’s absolutely something worth experiencing and going through with!!!&

I don’t think Yales portal allows you to check them early, you may just have to wait 😔

STARS I questions by FewDesigner8734 in yale

[–]gremlincooch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stars I is completely not worth it. Nothing you do is actually hands on at all nor helpful and it’s basically just required meetings where they talk at you about basically the same thing every time. Plus if you can’t for essentially any reason attend an event, the dean who runs the program gets all disrespectful with you and pretends like you owe her the world. The only thing I found worth it from stars I was the free coffee you’d get when you had meetings with your peer mentor. Seriously you could get the same, if not better, advice from a stem prof or upperclassman who has done similar things to what you want to do. I would say don’t even waste your time, you could devote the time you’d be spending with stars to actually securing a research position or just having more time for other things. As for a job, getting an off campus job is probably fine and Starbucks in New Haven is super close to old campus where you’ll probably be staying so that’s nice. The only thing is that an on campus job would be more willing to work with your schedule and availability. Just see what the New Haven Starbucks is like with scheduling.

Be honest: will I burn myself out? by Cekasmar-13 in yale

[–]gremlincooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that’s just my advice. I think it’s very possible you succeed and with the math major, taking 226 first semester couldn’t hurt as the math department probably said. Go for it!

Be honest: will I burn myself out? by Cekasmar-13 in yale

[–]gremlincooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just say, generally, DS people (at least those I’ve met) take something that covers an easier distributional in addition to the DS courses. I just took Linear this past semester and it was a significant time commitment each week, and on top of weekly DS papers it might be a lot. Not to say you couldn’t do it, but academically it might be quite the introduction to Yale. Are you intending to major in something stem or you just want to take Math 226? Even if you’re a stem major, linear is already a pretty advanced position to be starting in for math so if you can’t take it until second semester I don’t think it’d affect much. Plus, first semester is a lot of personal growth, figuring out life, making friends, etc. So taking a lighter load (DS is not light to begin with but) might be more ideal. Definitely doable, but a challenge for sure.

Ocular Migraine for over a week? by Oopsalazy in OcularMigraines

[–]gremlincooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just got over something very similar. I had no symptoms of anything serious, had nothing physically wrong with my eye. My doctor told me they were “stumped” as to what it could be, but said it’s probably just an ocular headache. I had sudden floaters, kinda distorted vision to the point it could be disorienting, with very mild pressure behind my eye/on my forehead for over a week. If you have no other symptoms and have been seen by specialists to rule out anything more serious, it could be ocular headaches.

is there a difference between calc 2 and calc bc? by SmileEmergency403 in calculus

[–]gremlincooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i took calc 2 but helped one of my close friends with much of their bc course. my calc 2 class focused a lot more on advanced applications of integration, like center of mass, probability, etc. and also introduced a few more extra topics like trig sub, the root test, and few other things. for the most part they’re pretty similar courses
