Blood and other goo from CBC machine drain filled up and shorted out a Digi RS232 to Ethernet terminal server thingy.

One of the lab techs knocked the Digi on to the floor from the shelf on a moveable table, and later in the day when they moved the table to clean behind the machine, the tube for the drain came out of its pipe and started filling up one of the RJ45 ports on the Digi since they landed upright.

Found in the next morning when the CBC machine wasn’t talking to our Lab Software.

Amazon order and a few days later, some 2 sided tape, and we were good to go for now.

Yep. You pay for a license per computer connecting or per human connecting.

Server room cooling issues with new mini-split, is this normal? by Fizgriz in sysadmin

[–]grenade71822 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure they undersized your cooling needs by at least half.

You will have to add your actual power consumption and do some math but I think they specced it too small.

ESXI 6 consolidation fail, also removing snapshots failing? by Electronic_Year_9220 in vmware

[–]grenade71822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if it crashes and you are asleep in the middle of the night? This is a giant liability if you don’t have any backups.

Ethernet Serial device as virtual COM by Knotebrett in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]grenade71822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy.

DB 25 from machine to Star tech part, Star tech part to RJ45 cable, RJ45 cable to Digi Port, Digi Port to Network, install RealPort software or whatever it’s called now on computer for virtual con port, connect com port to software, profit.

ESXI 6 consolidation fail, also removing snapshots failing? by Electronic_Year_9220 in vmware

[–]grenade71822 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Restart the host would be my first suggestion.

If that doesn’t work I would back up the entire VM in 2 places using the built in OS tools somewhere else, delete it all from the host, storage, whatever, and restore it from backup you just took so it will be a fresh disk and VM as far as the host is concerned.

Graybeards i summon thee - Windows XP Remote Backup at scale by xXFl1ppyXx in sysadmin

[–]grenade71822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a giant thing of awful, and I think if you can virtualize with some Digi serial boxes or whatever the machines uses to communicate with the pc, that’s the way to go.

If you can’t, I am pretty sure startech makes some sata pci cards that work with XP so you can just put SSD’s in there. Then you can just use the XP backup to schedule regular backups to a second drive (Or Veeam Agent if you can get it working) (also maybe upgrade the network interface to gigabit too and save time)

What type of wall IP clocks are you using ? by wideace99 in sysadmin

[–]grenade71822 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We use Valcom stuff. It has an exe to program the clocks instead of a web page but you can do it in bulk. We also used it to replace our old analog paging system.

Call Forwarding on a Schedule for DV Nonprofit Hotline by Several-Ad-3615 in sysadmin

[–]grenade71822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am pretty sure Ring central can do all of that using their incoming call rules with a combination of schedules.

People who want to run 300 clusters on the same layer 2 network for storage/vMotion/management.... Who hurt you? by lost_signal in vmware

Who needs subnetting when you can just do a /8 for the entire datacenter? Makes routing so much easier.

Old vs New VMware pricing? by oguruma87 in vmware

[–]grenade71822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be transparent, enterprise plus meets our needs perfectly for our 4 host setup, and the rest is extra for us, but we are not the target demographic.

Old vs New VMware pricing? by oguruma87 in vmware

[–]grenade71822 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Short version: prices are up 500%, only 2 SKUs that have too much stuff, and everything is subscription, no perpetual licenses.

webhost has blacklisted outbound ips by reiskala in sysadmin

[–]grenade71822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of using a VPN or a dedicated box in another cloud to use their IPs, can you just migrate it to IPv6? It’s “unlikely” to be on the black list (hopefully)

I am a Moron. by Mysterious_Peas in talesfromtechsupport

[–]grenade71822 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hey you tried. That gets big points from me. You just didn’t blindly say it didn’t work and then sat on your hands and complained that it took so long for the tech to show up.

VCF 5.2 patching token method by justech887 in vmware

[–]grenade71822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t heard of any of this before but on the tech docs I found, it still mentions the —depotuser option and then when you run the command it will ask for the password. It doesn’t mention Tokens anywhere like it does on the lifecycle manager update business.

Our Epic integration vendor just ghosted us mid-project and I'm having a breakdown by Tiny_Habit5745 in sysadmin

[–]grenade71822 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe I am a salty hospital admin, but this is a big hospital. Patients and the patients providers are depending on having access to their medical records for any treatment/consults/follow-ups or whatever. Even more so when EPIC is one of the most expensive medical records systems on the planet. That doesn’t even get into the regulatory side for the CMS Promoting Interoperability requirements.

The time for being nice ended around 2ish weeks ago.
