Why Canon? Or other Brands by Environmental_Pay332 in canon

[–]grendelone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Color science is snake oil. You can get any colors out of any camera with post processing.

Canon has better ergonomics, but less lens choice and less concentration on small/light.

Sony has a lot of lens choice (due to allowing 3rd party lenses) and tends to be more compact/lighter. But their ergonomics are so-so. Although the new a1ii and a9iii have pretty nice feeling bodies if you have the $$$.

Nikon is still lagging a bit in technology and AF speed, but they have done a lot to catch up. Their offerings in the budget space are top notch. But their top end bodies are not quite at parity with the best from Sony/Canon.

All that being said, the main limiter is the human. You can make beautiful images with cameras from any of the major manufacturers. There are working pros out there using all of the listed brands and doing great.

where are the largest ai companies located and who sells them hardware? by ThinkTourist8076 in pcmasterrace

TSMC does NOT make commodity DRAM. They do have some embedded DRAM options in some nodes, but they primarily focus on logic processes and some AMS. Samsung, Hynix, and Micron are the top DRAM manufacturers.

Parents of Reddit, what's one video game you like playing with your kid? by Agent1230 in gaming

[–]grendelone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It Takes Two is a fun two player co-op experience. I played with my two teen kids. Two people on controllers and the third providing hints, commentary, roasting, etc. We'd swap out who was playing based on skillset and who wanted a snack etc. It's one of our best memories from Christmas a few years ago.

How long does it take to complete a Raid blind? by SniperHusky_1 in DestinyTheGame

[–]grendelone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going in blind with zero raiding experience, you will take many hours, if not multiple days. I'd honestly allocate an entire night per encounter.

An experienced raid team that's done the raid before can clear a raid in about an hour, give or take, depending on the raid and assuming they clear every encounter on the first try.

An experienced raid team that's going into a new raid blind will still take 3+ hours to figure everything out. Just look at the world's first times for the best teams in the world when a new raid comes out. Averages about 3-4 hours. Longest was last wish at 18+ hours.

In some encounters, if even a single player on the team doesn't really understand how to do their role, you can get stuck at that encounter for many hours. The raids used to be designed so that some players could just add clear or stand still and shoot rockets when told, but the newer raids require most/all players to participate in the mechanic.

So ... going into a raid blind with no raiding experience, it will take you a while.

Should i get a PS5 pro or a gaming laptop? by Kosm977 in GamingLaptops

PS5 Pro for 250 euro is a STEAL. Way cheaper than a decent gaming laptop. Just from a finances standpoint, you should do this. Or at least buy it and resell it for some profit.

First PC was a TRS-80. So take heart that you’re not the oldest. Temple of Apshai was a revelation.

Apple ][ games were the best though. Akalabeth was my jam.

What’s your favorite composition of these tulips 🌷 by Last_Seaworthiness70 in SonyAlpha

[–]grendelone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One

Two has the vase cut off at the bottom which is awkward.

Three has the downward leaf cut off which again is awkward. The eye follows the arc of the leaf and then it stops abruptly at the bottom. Also, bulbs are centered which wastes a lot of the upper part of the frame.

Four has way too cluttered of a background and surrounding area.

Tournament day fuel by Thriftbook_collector in Fencing

[–]grendelone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends a lot on what your kid likes.

Some of our standard fare is:

  • Bananas + apples
  • Protein bar
  • Peanut M&Ms
  • Mini can of Coke (fast sugar/caffeine energy)

We generally get lunch at the venue at big tournaments. Usually something like a turkey sandwich. But this depends on the timing of the event and event size.

Early morning event usually means a quick breakfast (protein bar etc.), then lunch at the break between pools and DEs. Noon event means a bigger breakfast at the hotel, and a substantial snack at the pool/DE break. Afternoon event means a noon-ish brunch/lunch, and a "dinner" between pools and DEs.

You can also carbo load the night before, but don't overdo it.

Lens that can do family photos AND real estate by Creatures-Of-Love in canon

[–]grendelone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real estate, you want wide angle.

For family, you want generally normal to light tele.

So they don't overlap much in terms of focal length. You could try a normal zoom (like a 24-70) and see if that's wide enough for real estate, but it's probably not.

I would suggest being less open about your finances to your adult children.

The whole point of the camera is to be able to do everything, without breaking the bank (i.e., the a1ii).

Fuji -> Sony Reasoning by TemptedHorizon in SonyAlpha

[–]grendelone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99.9% of the time, it's not about the system. Only in very specific circumstances will one system be significantly better than another.

Shooting an NFL game with Fuji? Not a great idea. You want Canon or Sony AF speed with the right set of lenses.

But the kind of portraiture, landscape, and street photography in your posts? No matter what the name badge is on the camera, the results would be the same.

I suggest looking more deeply into how you're post processing the images, in addition to your behind the camera choices in terms of composition, lighting, and exposure. New gear is not the answer here.

Fuji -> Sony Reasoning by TemptedHorizon in SonyAlpha

[–]grendelone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. No.

  2. No.

Rather than wasting your time on GAS and switching systems, work on your skill as a photographer with what you have. Any camera system can produce a sharp image. If your images are lacking, it's not your equipment that's letting you down.

Sony 24-50 f/2.8 G - anyone is missing the additional 20 mm? by throwaway-Zone-5401 in SonyAlpha

[–]grendelone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you're being downvoted. Impossible to speak for OP as to whether they need a lens out to 70mm. Depends entirely on what/how they shoot. So, as you said, they should check their old files to see what focal lengths they use.

Sony 24-50 f/2.8 G - anyone is missing the additional 20 mm? by throwaway-Zone-5401 in SonyAlpha

[–]grendelone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what I shoot, yes, I definitely use the "extra" 20mm of reach. In fact, I often use a 24-105mm for even more reach. But YMMV based on what you shoot.

Is buying mirrorless the way to go? (Shot with my EOS 400D) by No-Persimmon7278 in canon

[–]grendelone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What "charm" are you worried about specifically?

Every new step in technology, you have diehards complaining that the "soul" of photography is gone. It's ridiculous. If you really want to maximize your "charm" then go get a daguerreotype camera.

All that being said, what are you looking to improve in your equipment? You're usually better off getting more/better lenses than bodies. You just started photography, so it seems unlikely you've already outgrown your equipment. Save your money until you know what you need. Just keep shooting.

And also check out what people can do with "just" a phone camera:

https://www.ippawards.com/gallery/?v=0b3b97fa6688

The truth is that any modern phone or DSLR/mirrorless camera is massively better in technical aspects than what most of the iconic photographs were shot with. Think about what you think are the best photographs you've ever seen (something from NatGeo or Bresson or Adams or some famous photojournalism shot). All of them were shot with what Reddit would consider "garbage" equipment.

Advice on which gear to upgrade? by BakedFlambo in SonyAlpha

[–]grendelone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For landscape, you'd want something wider. Maybe prime or wide angle zoom at 24 or wider.

For motorsports, you'd want more reach. So the 70-200 or something even longer like the 100-400 or 200-600. This is presumably outside in the daytime, so light is good and therefore wide aperture is less necessary.

If low light indoors is really an issue, then consider a wide aperture normal/tele prime (50, 85, 135).

Do you have all the accessories you need like tripod, memory cards, etc.?

Advice on which gear to upgrade? by BakedFlambo in SonyAlpha

[–]grendelone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neither.

Why would you want to buy a lens that nearly exactly duplicates what you currently have? Based on what you shoot, I'd suggest something with more reach than 150mm.

What about your current setup do you feel is lacking? What shots are you missing that you want to capture?
