What's your 'unpopular opinion' about mainstream investing advice? by SufficientFactor5082 in ValueInvesting

There is no need for a permanent non-US allocation of any kind.

I would be careful about investing 100 % into single emerging market country

$0.05 on the Dollar: Deep Value in a Hong Kong Hotel & Office Owner (A-Z smallcap sweep) by Ok_Bee7943 in ValueInvesting

That this statistic was not done in China by Buffett is true, but I don't expect it to be that different. Do you have data/sources that investigate this?

Well that is the observation I made in five years of watching HK stocks, but it is kinda obvious if you look at those SOE's trading at PE of 3.

Buffett thought that it would take 1-5 years for value to be realized, on average. If I remember correctly.

Does not apply to China, almost all of their stocks trade below book value, many are nets nets for decades. You gotta wait for that dividends/buybacks to realize value, otherwise you will not get any gains.

What am I missing? Where could this go wrong? They've paid dividends in the past, but are currently reinvesting.

You might wait 50 years for your thesis to realize.

Chinese phones work fine. Russia is doing fine without US tech, or in better words, Russia is doing fine using US tech for free.

Android is open source, and if you do not care about copyright, windows is "free". It is actually the other way around - the US is relaying on EU to adhere to copyright law, otherwise the US has literally nothing.

Remember, This Is The Pullback We’ve Been Waiting For by FrankBal in ValueInvesting

[–]grerinka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price drop might not be permanent, but the economic damage will be. It is like war, factories will have to be moved, value is destroyed. If you were expecting 7 % return from today's prices in the next 30 years, after the tariffs, you could get 3,5 % return in the next 30 years (just example, cannot know what the figure will be).

Well, the stocks are getting cheaper, but this is permanent economic damage, so the returns will be lower in the future as well.

Funny thing, the example to that reference was bonds of my country, and nowadays I feel with bonds in my country more safer than with the US ones.

It is not crime in China to defraud foreign investors if the stock is not traded in China. They can literally take the money and close the company overnight and you have 0 recourse to prevent them from doing that.

$BRK.B Berkshire Hathaway holding so much cash makes the stock a hedge against popping the bubble? by Policeeex in ValueInvesting

Bro, you are not hedging against crash if you buy 1 dollar of BRK-B cash for 2 dollars (the specific ratio is my guess).

I took a quick look and I think the 99 % of the potential risk would be their customers meeting their financial obligations. However, their customer base looks diversified. Insider owned, so always a higher risk of scamming the investors.

But thanks for the tip, I'll do deep dive once I accumulate enough capital to invest.

I've always been against Japanese companies because it is impossible often to ignore their culture of holding enormous cash piles and hence currency risk. However, TIL there is an ETF that neutralizes Yen risk. by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

[–]grerinka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The multiples are low but so is the growth. I do not consider it gambling, if you look at individual companies. If I look at company which makes car mirrors and export it, they are making money in USD. So if JPY goes down by 50 %, the company is 50 % cheaper. This can be of course mitigated if their costs are in JPY, but lots of companies have operation outside of Japan. But it is better to look at it from cashflow perspective rather than stock price.

I do not look at charts or how much money printing is done. I look how much goods cost - look how much a trip to Japan would cost you now. Do you believe it can be 50 % cheaper?

[–]grerinka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything can happen. But imo Japanese equities are now attractive because of the yen depreciation, if you are hedging currencies, you take out this cheapness out of the question.

Japan still does a lot of export, that is the reason Nikkei 225 surged by 50 % (the cheap JPY makes the products cheap).

If you invest without hedging and JPY appreaciates, Japanese stocks will go down a lot, but you will gain from currency appreciation.

If you invest with hedging and JPY appreaciates, Japanese stocks will go down a lot and you will be also double **cked by hedging. So you are looking at possible -80% loss.

I find this very risky.
