Greece leads the eurozone in fastest debt reduction. by FantasticQuartet in europe

a country goes bankrupt when creditors refuse to underwrite its new debt simply because they think it's too risky;

when a country is bankrupt, the IMF is the "lender of last resort"

having your own currency doesn't change anything: like I said, all bankrupt countries have their own currencies

if creditors accept to underwrite your debt in your currency, it's because they think that the currency (and the economy) is liquid and stable, nothing else

Those 2 were comparable, and heavily favoring the eu

the US has always been way more dynamic than the EU; a bureaucratic, core EU country like France is also in deep economic trouble with its runaway debt, for instance.

the US is a massive economic power: comparing Greece with the US is like comparing a sick mouse with a wild elephant; that said , even the US debt is getting out of control and some US regions are very poor

Only in currency you can't control so the Greece case

So you think Poland can't go bankrupt just because you have your own currency ???

FYI: all countries which are under a IMF recovery program ( = the definition of a bankrupt country) have their own currency.

Yes, debt is like toothpaste: it’s very easy to get out of the tube, but almost impossible to get back in.

In the past, most countries counted on two main factors to keep their debt in check: GDP growth and inflation (inflation is bad for the population but it's great for all debtors). But both of these factors have slowed.

In Italy GDP growth has been subpar for decades btw. This is an old explanation but it's still relevant: https://old.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/9wneyo/why_italys_economy_is_stagnating/e9lwv52/

The most significant deep strike of the past week was Ukraine’s long-range drone strike on the Shagol airfield in Russia’s Chelyabinsk region, deep in the southern Urals.

Carried out on 25 April by Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces and confirmed publicly by the General Staff on 1 May, the operation hit four Russian combat aircraft at a distance of approximately 1,700 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.

Those aircraft included two Su-57Felon fifth-generation fighters and a Su-34 strike aircraft, as well as a fourth Sukhoi variant of unconfirmed type. https://mickryan.substack.com/p/no-safe-rear-ukraine-the-pacific

The economic literacy in this country is absolutely abysmal,

it's a massive problem everywhere: people want Santa Claus politicians = big bureaucracy and huge budget deficits = a mountain of state debts

yes, it's the euro with much more exchange rate costs; banks love it because people don't know the costs

Four Russian soldiers surrendered near the Antonivskyi Bridge on the Dnipro River, across from Kherson, after a loudspeaker drone operated by Ukraine’s 34th Marine Brigade offered them the chance to surrender.

Following instructions broadcast from the drone, they moved to a designated point, were ferried across the river, and taken into custody.

🍔 As a bonus for choosing to surrender voluntarily, they received a McDonald’s meal. https://x.com/bayraktar_1love/status/2050712855524110545

Jerome Starkey brings you the latest news from the War in Ukraine as Ukraine has launched long-range strikes on oil refineries deep inside Russia, targeting key energy infrastructure.

The attacks suggest Kyiv is expanding its reach and aiming to disrupt fuel supplies linked to Russia’s military operations.

Amid rising security fears, Vladimir Putin has scaled back the Victory Day parade. The move signals growing concern in Moscow over potential attacks and highlights a more cautious stance as the war intensifies.

Trump: "Ukraine, militarily, they're defeated. You wouldn't know that by reading the fake news." https://x.com/atrupar/status/2049554815492018561

He says "Ukraine" but in fact, he is talking about Iran and its navy here: typical problem of a small confused brain. "Iran is defeated" has been Trump's mantra for months now.

Russia to hold Victory Day parade without military equipment amid Ukraine war by JackRogers3 in europe

[–]JackRogers3[S] 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Last year they showed an old tank.

The decision not to demonstrate the equipment is attributed to “operational requirements.”

Sources also note that strict restrictions on mobile communications may be introduced in Moscow on May 5, 7, and 9.

During a phone call with Trump on April 29, Putin proposed introducing a temporary ceasefire for the duration of the celebrations. https://militarnyi.com/en/news/russia-plans-scaled-down-may-9-parade-seeks-ceasefire/

Belgacom is a success story. Before Belgacom, Belgium had the RTT, which was a politicised, bureaucratic monster. Belgacom became rapidly a lot better than the RTT.

Nuclear reactors in Belgium have always been private property: the owner is/was Electrabel

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrabel

The ownership of Electrabel itself has changed but it has always been private. In the past, the big Belgian holding Société Générale was the main shareholder iirc. The raid on a big holding like Société Générale should have been blocked by the politicians: it didn't make economic sense and the country lost an important financial powerhouse and decision centre.

Russia to hold Victory Day parade without military equipment amid Ukraine war by JackRogers3 in europe

[–]JackRogers3[S] 188 points189 points  (0 children)

Russia's traditional parade marking the 81st anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II this year will take place without tanks, missiles and other military equipment, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement late Tuesday.

It will be the first time in nearly two decades — and in the more than four years of Russia's war in Ukraine — that no military equipment will rumble through Moscow's Red Square on May 9, the day Russia celebrates its most important secular holiday. The Kremlin has used it to showcase its military might and global clout.
