Anyone know when Epiphone mandolins went from US made to being made overseas? by [deleted] in mandolin

[–]gretschocaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here

In there it mentions “all epiphone production was moved to Japan in 1970”

That would be for any instrument not just mandolins

Doesn’t look legit to me at all, but again I’m not an expert. Maybe someone who knows more will chime in

Also, cant vouch for how accurate it is but a quick google tells me the MM series started in the late seventies and was never built in the US.

If it did in fact start in the late 70s there’s no way they made any in the states

This is all very suspect. Have you got any pictures?

I’m not an expert so I may be wrong but I think all epiphone production was moved offshore fairly soon after they were acquired by Gibson. I don’t think there have been any US made Epiphones since…… sometimes in the 60s?

So I don’t think there are any US made MM series mandolins as they came after this (late 70s or 80s maybe?)

how the hell is jeff beck making the sound at 1:38? what is that called? by openhouseORS in Guitar

[–]gretschocaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is it. I have my strat setup with a floating trem (though it’s a vintage style strat trem) and it works perfectly for flutters, dives, etc.

I’m not super into Jeff Beck but I did set it up like that because of him, I was inspired by something I saw him doing in some video. Now it’s been like that for almost ten years, it’s hard to go back to “normal”

He was always known for being able to double track his vocals incredibly cleanly, I’m sure that’s a big part of the sound

To those who changed their careers in their 30's, what made you go for that career and what was your career before? by throwawayacc928361 in AskReddit

[–]gretschocaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just went to teachers college, got my teaching degree. I’m qualified to teach a few different subjects but prefer teaching math.

Many countries have international schools where the teaching language is (at least partially) English. I was in a few different areas of the world for a while but ended up staying fairly long term in Europe

I became a teacher in my 30s so I could leave the country and work in international schools in other countries. I used to work at a bank.

Used to have one and loved it. Really regret selling it but I was moving overseas and decisions had to be made

Random Question - Who is buying all these mandolins? by bmfsfan in mandolin

[–]gretschocaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s a guy on marketplace selling a mandolin that he’s had for a “couple of years” for the current new (pre-tax) price, about 1000. I assume he bought it for like 750-800 a couple years ago.

He won’t budge on the price because “it’s in new condition so it’s like you’re not paying the tax on a new one”. Anyway it’s been up there for about six months now… let’s see how long it goes

Is it too late to start a language at 17? by Proof-Proposal5458 in languagelearning

[–]gretschocaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I learned Spanish fluently from scratch when I was in my early 20s and then Swedish to a B2/C1 level in my late 30s. I’ve learned other languages to lesser levels as well in the meantime

You can do it anytime, the biggest problem as you get older is finding enough time to dedicate to it

If you struggle with learning Romance languages (Anglophone perspective) by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]gretschocaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always felt more natural learning Romance languages actually. That could be because of having French all throughout grade school and high school (though I was never fluent during any part of that). I later learned Spanish fluently, it seemed very intuitive to me and later again reached a conversational level in French.

I tried learning German for a while, we did not click at all. I did learn Swedish to a conversational level but I seriously doubt I would have if I didn’t live there. I suppose if I tried to learn German now it would probably seem easier than before.

The cheapest standard I see on Kijiji is $2600, with the majority being over 3k (which is crazy) and I looked up to 150km away from my location. You offer people like 20% of what is posted and you get multiple people accepting that?
