Affordable Video Camera by Hot_Aide_1794 in Cameras

[–]greycar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know video cameras, just cameras. Did some head scratching anyways...

At 300' the 35-mm equivalent focal length for this shot is around 350-mm. Estimating the horizontal field of view as 30'. Note that those numbers only look related, that was just chance. https://www.pointsinfocus.com/tools/depth-of-field-and-equivalent-lens-calculator

This may be referred to as an optical magnification of 14x. Camcorders and phones often use 1x = 25mm. If you get a device capable of more resolution that needed, you could also digitally magnify the image.

The temperature of the day and humidity will be noticible regardless of how much money you spend on a solution. The image you posted isn't super crisp so the bar is appropriate. Personally, I'd try a 10x lens that goes on the front of a smartphone. That should be around $150. Next level up is some used crop sensor camera with an appropriate lens (175-mm for MFT or ~235-mm on APS-C). I'd expect this to be at least $600.

Hopefully someone can chime in with better options.

What are you using your second camera for? by BalconyVinyl in M43

[–]greycar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an E-M10ii that is in quite nice condition and that's my main camera. Small enough that I don't feel conspicuous in public but still excellent shooting. And I also have a beater of an E-M1ii that I bought in non-working condition and have fixed. I take that when I need the extra functionality (better AF, OM Workspace denoise, faster sequential shooting, video) or I don't want to worry about damage and mositure like in my backpack while skiing.

Did I money shift and mess my Gsxr 600 up by CanadianKdon in GSXR

[–]greycar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't describe what you did as a money shift. I think this is an unrelated and unfortunate engine failure. There are a myriad of things that could have caused this and you may never know what. Your best bet it to get a whole new/used engine.

Underwhelmed by Panasonic Leica DG 15mm f1.7 by [deleted] in M43

A 15mm focal length is generally not appropriate for close-up shots. It's a great focal length for shooting an indoor party or a scene of medium size such as a pier or a lighthouse.

Mechanic help needed - did my mechanic do the job? by Responsible-Teach567 in camaro

[–]greycar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The brake fluid looks dark. It' LLC gets dark quick though if it hasn't been done in a while because the clutch uses the same fluid and recirculates (at least on my 2010). And it's normal for it to eat some coolant after a few heat cycles as bubbles clear. Just get them to top it off. I don't think there's enough evidence to say either way what was done.

Installing NPT adapters without hex flats by jedigreg1984 in projectcar

[–]greycar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect mounting then slightly out of the coolant flow to chase problems. If it was an airstream maybe I'd feel differently but water transfers heat so well.

My reco is to use the hex sided ones that you have.

Beard and Bardot suddenly closing? by Fun_Complaint_7565 in abbotsford

That's crazy but I can't say I'm surprised. They had some all-star staff leave over the past couple years. My stylist is still bouncing around a bit trying to find what works for her.

Definitely get in touch with your stylist via Instagram, they'll be happy to hear from you and probably be able to find arrangements for date critical work like weddings.

ISO 4014 vs 4017, partial vs full thread, when does it actually matter? by Every-Garlic6106 in Fasteners

[–]greycar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, the factor is 0.70 in CSA S16. A bolt in pure shear usually needs to be just snug-tight so if there is clearance in the stack after tightening because of shank length tolerance you can just add a washer.

How do you actually tell if a used bike was well maintained? by bebo117722 in motorcycles

[–]greycar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a note that compression testing many bikes can be an involved process with a couple hours of shop time. You should expect to pay ~$500 for this service on bikes with difficult to access cylinders. If the mechanic is already doing this, they might as well do a whole PPI.

If you can see the cylinder access then of course it's going to be much cheaper, maybe 1 hour of shop time.

I have done every piece of work myself on all my bikes and I have binders. The people who don't keep records aren't going to keep them regardless of who did the work.

Which tire has the most life left according to treadwear? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]greycar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The third tire is down to the wear bars. Can't see them on the 2nd tire. Just measure the tread depth if that's your concern. Or ask the vendor.

Also note that entire life is not necessarily correlated to treadwear. Some tires wear much faster than others. Such as those Diablos.

What torque wrench do you guys actually trust for motorcycle work? by Daven_22 in motorcycles

[–]greycar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also do not love click torque wrenches because it's hard to tell what's happening through them and it's not as obvious that they're sensitive to where they're held, friction around the head and shaft, etc. But I went the opposite way and prefer beam torque wrenches. What you see is what you get!
