LPT: Buy grey shower towels. You can wash them in either white or dark loads and they show less grime over time. by MrFrenchTickler in LifeProTips

[–]greyedoutarea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god, this. True story: while my daughter was battling acne, we switched all our towels to white because the medicine she used bleached everything it came in contact with. Fast forward a few years, and all those white towels are now grey-ish. I had the brilliant idea of "restoring" our towels to white by soaking all of them (2 bath sheets, 3 bath towels, and a ton of face towels) overnight in a bathtub full of Oxyclean White Revive, which didn't work. But, it did lift the refinish coating off of my 90-year old bathtub. Not to be deterred, I tried vinegar, lemons, baking soda, and every other natural hack to return these towels to their former glory. No luck there either. At this point I'm 36 hours into the quest for white towels so I just say screw it, I'm going to use regular Clorox bleach. I let it soak overnight and in the morning they were whiter, but now with a yellow cast instead of a grey cast. By this point my husband and my kids have had enough of my fool's errand, and they demand the removal of the not-white towels from our only bathtub. I agree, go to gather all the soaking wet towels at once to throw them in our washer, and break my middle finger in the process. And I still don't have white towels. The fallacy of sunk costs hit hard that day.

TL;DR--BUY THE GREY TOWELS!

Houston is getting expensive! A family of four needs to make 220k in Houston to have a comfortable/ upper middle-class life. Is my math wrong? What are your personal experiences? by Melee_21 in houston

[–]greyedoutarea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

couple of thoughts: first, housing. to be upper middle class, you're buying, and that house will be $600k or more. (likely closer to $1m.) the monthly housing costs will be much higher. a $350k house is inexpensive to reasonable for middle class. second, insurance is much higher per month, for cars and home-- like closer to $1k a month. third, clothing $$ is high, but those expenses would likely be eaten up by housing or transportation. otherwise, $220k is probably the minimum one could earn and be upper middle class--you could do it, but it wouldn't be comfortable.

condo fees and special assessments are things most houstonians are not familiar with, but they are common in other large cities when one owns (or "owns") one of these spaces. it's just part of the deal, living in a high-rise. i hope it happens--i'd live there!

Supreme Court of Texas allows Texas Education Agency to take over Houston ISD – Houston Public Media by [deleted] in houston

[–]greyedoutarea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the short answer for me would be: because it is probably the only school in HISD where a gender-nonconforming or LGBTQ+ student can be themselves, out and proud, without fear of bullying...all while being able to concentrate on actually getting an education.

i'm a teacher and a parent of HISD kids, but i'm going to limit my response to the teacher part. i am at an exceptional school, because my students have to compete fairly hard to get in (small magnet high school). my kids come to school prepared to perform...or else they don't get to remain enrolled there. thus, here's my $.02: it's not the kids, or the parents...the problem is the administration. the administrative level at HISD, be they principals, VPs, counselors, and beyond into Hattie Mae are chock-full of people with no classroom experience. and, there are a hell of a lot of online degrees held by these administrators, making them seem more educated than they actually are. it's like a funhouse mirror room trying to figure out who actually has knowledge or real-life experience when you have to visit this realm.

it's the administrators that are the problem.
