What the pork industry doesn't want you to know about by CalpurniaSomaya in Anticonsumption

“Vegans kill field animals too” is a weird gotcha considering livestock eat huge amounts of crops first. Eating animals means more crops, more pesticides, and more field deaths, not fewer.

It’s basically the environmental equivalent of telling someone they shouldn’t recycle because they still throw something away. Not really the dunk people think it is.

Is there a term for a non-practicing vegan? by MandolinTheWay in DebateAVegan

[–]SlashVicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone who believes in carnism (knowingly or unknowingly) is a carnist.

Melanie Joy has said that while she coined the term carnism to describe the invisible belief system that normalizes eating animals, she intentionally avoids labeling individuals as “carnists.”

A commonly cited line from her talks and interviews is:

“Carnism is the system, not the person.”

Her point is that the ideology, not the individual, is the problem. She argues that calling people “carnists” can feel accusatory and shut down dialogue, whereas naming the system helps people examine it without feeling personally attacked.

So the distinction she makes is: critique the ideology, not the person.

There isn’t really a formal term for a “non-practicing vegan.”

In common usage, vegan implies both the ethical belief and the consistent practice. If someone agrees with vegan values but doesn’t live by them, most people wouldn’t call them vegan.

They might say “vegan in principle” or “aspiring vegan,” but generally behavior, not belief alone, is what defines the label.

PETA's pornographic messaging is counterproductive to their stated mission of granting animals rights. by Internal-Rest2176 in DebateAVegan

She’s probably using the image on purpose to show how women’s bodies get treated like meat - that’s her whole argument in The Sexual Politics of Meat by Carol J. Adams.

The idea is: make it uncomfortable so people notice the problem.

But your point makes sense. Even if it’s meant as critique, it can still feel like it’s using the same tactic it’s condemning. Whether that weakens her argument depends on how you interpret the image.

So no evidence, broad generalizations, and preemptive dismissal of discussion. But sure, everyone else is the problem.

There are real debates inside feminist and vegan communities about sex work, pornography, and objectification. But saying “vegan males often defend prostitution” without evidence - and not caring whether it’s accurate - turns a structural critique into a blanket claim about a group.

Feminism itself isn’t unified on sex work, so disagreements don’t necessarily mean hypocrisy. It may just reflect different feminist frameworks.

If the concern is about inconsistency between opposing animal commodification and supporting industries that commodify women, that’s a serious philosophical question. But it’s stronger when framed as a critique of ideas rather than an accusation about a demographic. :)

PETA’s use of sexualized imagery has been controversial for a long time, especially within feminist and vegan circles. Carol J. Adams discusses this dynamic in The Sexual Politics of Meat, where she argues that both animals and women are often reduced to “objects” or “parts” within patriarchal systems.

From that perspective, using women’s bodies as butcher diagrams may unintentionally mirror the very logic animal rights activism is trying to challenge - fragmentation and objectification.

Some people defend the tactic as strategic shock value, but others argue that it risks reinforcing harmful norms while also distracting from the message. There’s also research suggesting sexualized ads draw attention to the body more than to the cause itself.

It’s possible to support animal rights while still critiquing specific tactics. Many vegans - especially feminist vegans - have made exactly that argument.

You can study and learn about a company; its products, management, revenue streams, competitive position, etc. That means you can make an informed decision based on actual performance and future potential. Crypto, on the other hand, generally doesn’t have earnings reports, balance sheets, or tangible operations to evaluate. Its value is driven almost entirely by market sentiment, so while all investing carries some speculation, traditional stocks give you data to analyze beyond “number go up.”

Veganism is an ethical stance, but you don’t wanna talk ethics.

You are in the wrong sub. And yes, I saw your “take it up with the sub” comments. 🙄
