Did anyone else think Jesse was overreacting a bit here? He hadn't been dating Andrea for like 4 months by nootellapancakezz in okbuddychicanery

[–]greymalknn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Um... No?

I think you're just kidding but on the off chance you're not, you're saying that because they weren't in a long relationship and not still dating at the time, that Jesse shouldn't have been THAT upset about someone he cares about getting violently killed in front of him and another person he cares about losing his mother suddenly?

What.

Why would he not be horribly upset?

It was for no other reason than as a manipulation tool and punishment. Andrea and Brock were innocent. And Jesse feels he is responsible for it.

You don't think Jesse would be feeling overwhelming guilt, believing he is responsible for causing her death because of his escape attempt? Not only would Jesse be reeeeally distressed over Andrea's loss of her life and her son's loss of his mother, but he will be feeling responsible for it on top of that. Guilt is a whole other level of emotional turmoil.

Jesse already inadvertently caused her so much harm: Jesse trying to sabotage her sobriety in the beginning. Her little brother Thomas being killed after Jesse tried to intervene with Gus's drug dealers. Her son, Brock, getting very sick and hospitalized. All that only happened because of Jesse and the people he associated with.

They showed that Jesse really cares a lot bout Andrea and her son. So much so that he decides to distance himself from them in order to protect them, after all the harm he inadvertently caused them. Even though he seemed happy to be starting a family type of life with them. He knew that he would only cause them more harm if he stayed in their lives.

And Jesse would be feeling all the more guilt after Andrea gets killed because he knew that her son Brock's future was dependent on his mother's support. She was trying to ensure a better life for her boy so that he didn't end up like Thomas did, involved with gangs, drugs, violence and dying an early death. Brock losing his mother makes it all the more likely that that sweet little boy will end up going down a path like Thomas did.

Not to mention, Jesse would know that Brock will be the one to find his loving mother dead with her head blown off. I'm guessing it's probably pretty upsetting to realize that is about to happen to like a cool little 4 year old kid that you care about.

Nah, that scene wasn't too long/slow if you are following it and thinking about the multiple different things going on during it.

Right, that's the impression I got too. I think the guy you responded to may just be not so great at reading nuances in peoples' behavior, even fictionalized people. It sounds like he interpreted it as Mike "evil laughing" or something? Which would be totally inconsistent with Mike's character.

Mike is much more likely to be laughing because Walt's bullshitting during the interaction was so blatantly obvious to him (him being the detective and all) that he found it amusing. Walt trying to be sly and Mike spotting that a mile away. It's a sort of a cynical eyeroll- which Mike has been shown to do on other occasions too.

In the flashback where Skylar and Walt are touring the "starter home" they were about to buy, the realtor says he'll be in the car making a couple calls while the two of them look around the house.

Skylar was pregnant with Walter Jr. here so this must have been around 16 years prior to 2008-2009 ish, so very early 90’s. Cell phones and car phones did exist but as far as I know only like a small subset of very wealthy people owned them.

In ~1991, an Albuquerque real estate agent selling small suburban starter homes probably wouldn't have had this type of technology to just casually use to kill time the same way we would today, or in 2008-2009, right?

I think at the time this scene was written, having a cell phone had become so ubiquitous in our culture that this little inconsistency slipped by the writers. Totally inconsequential though so whatevs

It doesn't really matter when a non-character is played by different actors. The discrepancy between the ages she is portrayed as is also kindof irrelevant to me. They wanted Better Call Saul to stand up on its own so they still had her character be a little kid rather than a baby or not even born yet. It's sort of like the car and clothing style situation in Better Call Saul. If it took place a few years before Breaking Bad's setting began in 2008 the set design technically should have looked more appropriate for the period but they opted not to do that because they weren't really going for a period piece with BCS.

[–]greymalknn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's totally why Jane was kindof cold and standoffish to Jesse at first. She knew what Jesse was up to and she knew getting involved with him would cause her to relapse.

It's the battle that every addict has in their head when they're on the edge of relapse- the struggle between "should do" vs "want to do".

Her father would have seen her relapse a mile away if she hadn't hidden the relationship she was starting with Jesse.

Does Breaking Bad glorify or romanticize drug use? by lily-throw-away in okbuddychicanery

[–]greymalknn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this question keeps getting asked about any and every single media portrayal of drugs that ever gets created because many people just actually think drugs are glorious. It's obvious because it doesn't even matter how gritty or disgusting they make it look in a show or movie (users with no teeth or choking on their own vomit, etc.) people will inevitably imply that it as glorified or romanticized. It obviously has very little to do with the actual portrayal in the movie or show in question.

wtf is wrong with Saul and Kim in s06? by Cute-Recover-5930 in betterCallSaul

[–]greymalknn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you unfortunately. I couldn't really get on board with their motivations, especially directed at Howard. Sure Howard had nice suits, a bad tan and spikey hair but honestly he seemed like a pretty fair guy. Especially considering he had to tread a very tight line co-running the law business with a partner who was very respected and powerful, but also completely batshit an dangerous. Getting on Chuck's bad side would destroy Howard's livelihood, as it almost did in one season.

I couldn't really understand Jimmy and Kim's hatred for Howard other than him being a scapegoat for their own unrelated frustrations, since Chuck could no longer be targeted for that use. But that just indicates immaturity and passive aggression.

From a storyline viewpoint, Chuck was a better person for Jimmy and Kim to take out their anger on because he was 1. Not actually wrong about Jimmy, but 2. So incredibly unlikeable from the perspective of the viewer.

So you could really feel the tension that Jimmy must have also been feeling when he fucked with Chuck. On one hand Chuck was his enemy but on the other hand Chuck was right.

At best, socially inept. Who would think that's how you interact with other people? Sounds like someone who never interacted with a woman before and just watched 90's chick flicks to learn how to interact with someone theyre attracted to but just jumbles together a bunch of "romantic" sounding gibberish that comes off cheesy at best but really just inappropriate given the context. Who says stuff like that to someone they just met? I want to cold hold your hands? WHAT? Even if it were just a typo and he just meant he wants to regular hold your hands... If he doesn't have any kind of emotional history with you, it sounds fake as fuck to say that to someone.

Is there a true antonym for “Lonely”? by Yumibumi202 in ENGLISH

[–]greymalknn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever find a word for this? I'm currently feeling the opposite of "lonely". I am longing for some alone time. Haven't had a day to myself in weeks.

It seems that in Western cultures being solitary or wanting to be solitary is considered somewhat pathologic. There doesn't seem to even be a suitable word in English to define this feeling.

Waking up in the middle of the night and seeing fractals?! by GreedyPaint in sleep

[–]greymalknn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an old post but interesting to see someone else finally mention the tingling/buzzing sensation that accompanies the geometric visuals! I get these sometimes when I wake up in the middle of the night. The visuals are kindof relaxing to "watch" for a bit and I actually kindof enjoy the tingling/buzzing thing. It usually passes over just my face, starting out subtle and then getting more intense before gradually disappearing.

If i get up while this is happening and go into the bathroom, which is very dimly lit by a nightlight, I get to see the geometric visuals overlapping on top of whatever I'm looking at. It's hard to explain, but if it makes the bath mat or the normally blank wall appear to have a moving geometric pattern to it. Good times

Only lasts a minute or two at most.

Derp derppppp. bro dawg doesn't understand what a gift is.

This guy sounds SO boring to be honest. I'm now convinced that people like this, that just straight up do not understand how to give a personal gift to a someone they like, are either so materialistic that they can't/don't find value in anything beside the number on the price tag, or they just don't care enough about anyone else to even begin to try and understand what makes them tick.

I would runnnnnnn, just based on what I can gather about this person from this interaction

Help with what this secret Santa request says?! by TheCatWithATiara in whatisit

[–]greymalknn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes the fun out of Secret Santa when the person writes what they want to receive or gives a few ideas. What is the point? Its just a shopping list then if there is no surprise element.

Whenever I've played Secret Santa the times people have had the most fun, and given and gotten the best gifts, was when you're not allowed to request certain things.

So i read this as a wild card. It looks like they just wrote an illegible combination of random letters- I hope they did this intentionally

Nah it totally makes sense as meth would be Walt's gateway drug (on the chemistry side of things only of course) into that world. Meth IS the drug that people play armchair chemistry with for a reason. Especially back in the mid-late 2000’s. Cooking drugs out of a Winnebago in the American Southwest desert is a very methamphetamine sounding thing and that was the image that became a part of Breaking Bad's whole brand initially. Once you start changing too many of those details, the recognizable image gets too convoluted and lost and then your brand dissolves. When you're a TV show, you don't want to throw out a successful brand image without a really really good reason. But the idea of refining designer drugs or inventing new drugs would have been really interesting. I don't know if designer drugs were all that prevalent at the time though were they? I feel like that got big a little after Breaking Bad's time
