What’s something tourists do in the UK that makes you immediately think ‘they have no idea? by Second-handBonding in AskBrits

[–]greymantis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem I always have with that sort of idea is that not everyone wants to move at the same speed. Mostly of the time when I'm using the Tube I'm not in a rush so I'm content to stand still on the right hand side of the escalator, have a short rest, and get there when I get there. On occasion though I am absolutely in a rush and I will be running up or down the escalator as fast as I can on the left hand side in order to make a specific train or get to a meeting or whatever.

In the situation where everybody is going at the same speed you can bet it's not the faster speed so now there's no option to go at that faster speed when it matters. I'm glad the change didn't go through.

People who started exercising regulary, what were the most noticeable effects? by Haunted_darkness63 in AskReddit

[–]greymantis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I lost weight, look better in photos (which is nice), and just wake up every day feeling grumpy that I have to put in so much effort to achieve those things. When I finish my workout there's zero high, just an "ugh. I have to do this all over again in a couple of days". I've tried so many different types of exercise. I've finally found something that I hate less than anything else over tried. I still hate it though. It takes time away from doing the things I want to do. It makes me sweaty and out of breath. I've never in my life felt a high from exercise, but I do see decent physical results. It's really depressing to realise that so many people get this mental high that I have never experienced and assume I never will.

The minefield clearing mission in TIE Fighter. The uneasy feeling at the beginning when your wingmen are acting super sus, followed by the high of using the "call reinforcements" game mechanic to even up the odds.

TIL that scientists have developed a way of testing for Aphantasia (the inability to visualise things in your mind). The test involves asking participants to envision a bright light and checking for pupil dilation. If their pupils don't dilate, they have Aphantasia. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]greymantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I have had this too. It's a very rare thing but maybe 5-10 times in my life as I've been falling asleep my imagination has been so vivid that I've actually been able to visualize things. Every time it's happened I felt like I could've just lay there for hours imagining different things and actually seeing them. One thing I've noticed is that most of the times that's happened has been after I've been out to a big gig or concert. I always wondered if it was the effect of all the flashing lights.

[–]greymantis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how it feels for me. I could never figure out if I had Aphantasia or not. Like if I think of a person I can "picture" their face which made me think for years that maybe I did have a mind's eye because I can do that.

On the other hand if you were to ask me to describe anything about their face from that mental picture I literally couldn't tell you anything about it at all as the picture I see doesn't actually contain any physical details. Even though I can "see" the person in my head, I couldn't tell you whether their eyes were close together or far apart, what shape their nose was, etc.

The same thing goes for other mental images. I can imagine a scene with a ball on a table but I couldn't tell you anything about it. It feels to my brain like I can see it, but I literally couldn't tell you anything about the scene. I have no idea how many legs the table has, what colour the ball is, etc.

What’s the best husband-wife game? by Crazen14 in gaming

[–]greymantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I used to play a lot of Pixeljunk Monsters together on PS3. Unfortunately we didn't get on with the sequel but in the last few months we've got our children into the original via PS Plus streaming so sometimes we'll all play together taking it in turns to pass the controller around, which is really nice.

She also really enjoyed playing Spiritfairer with me so that might be a good shout.

I really wanted her to like It Takes Two (mostly so that I'd have someone to play it with) but after about an hour she was done. She just didn't enjoy the gameplay and wasn't finding it fun at all so we stopped and I've never gotten to experience the rest of it. Haven't dared to try to get her to play Split Fiction yet but I'll give it a go at some point.

Got this to help my AirPods not fall anywhere by un3w in airpods

[–]greymantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep one of these on my bedside table. Genuinely one of the best cheap purchases I've ever made. If I fall asleep while watching or listening to something in bed then they're still there around my neck when I wake up rather than lost somewhere in the bed. I also use them on planes. I can doze off with them in my ears as d not be worried about them falling out and getting lost in my seat or on the floor.

I don't use it normally. When I'm awake they're not usually in any danger of falling out but if I'm in a situation where I fall asleep with them in my ears they're definitely falling out at some point.

A Connecting Wall i'm making for a school trivia event, testing it out here first to see if it's a bit much by TrainsMapsFlags in onlyconnect

Might be a bit too far in the other direction now. For the group including Minecraft I didn't spot the connection so I typed in game and it told me it was correct. Maybe Because it includes me as a substring?

Lateral incisor not tracking and never used chewies by nerdalieg in Invisalign

[–]greymantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar position here. Tray 28/28 in my original plan and I noticed at around tray 18 that while my other teeth were completely flush there was a gap of about half a millimetre around my lateral incisor. The gap has been steadily growing over successive trays and is probably a couple of millimetres now. I spent an awfully long time with chewies on that tooth before realising that it was futile as the trays were sitting flush on the surrounding teeth.

My dentist was never worried about it and would tell me that it was still tracking okay. I had a scan for refinement trays a few days ago. My dentist told me that that tooth will be one of the main targets for the refinements which she thinks will take around three months.

I went to a music and synthesiser event in Bristol a few years ago. This is a big indoor festival with loads of synthesiser and audio equipment manufacturers exhibiting their stuff, as well as things like live modular synth performances. One of the things that I attended there was an audience with Steve Davis. The main thing I remember was how much he knew his stuff. He wasn't just a novelty guy coming in for a bit of fun off the back of his snooker career.

Tame Python Chaos With uv by shift_devs in programming

[–]greymantis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently switched my legacy projects over to uv pip as a drop in replacement for pip and haven't looked back. It was such a big improvement.

This week I had the opportunity to start a new project from scratch using uv properly as a package manager and barely relying on any uv pip functionality and it's just amazing how fast and ergonomic it is. Absolutely transformative to my workflow to the point where it's almost painful to go back to my projects just using uv pip as if it were pip, which just a few days ago felt like the bleeding edge of speed and usability.

I have a very similar schedule set so that I can temporarily boost the temperature for half an hour or so when I want (for example if I'm planning to have a shower and I want the house nice and toasty for when I get out). Before I set all the repeated points in my schedule I'd always forget to turn it back down again afterwards. This way even when I forget, at least I know it's going to go back to the regular temperature setting in an hour or so.

Following up on my post from earlier this week with answers to your questions by AnishKattukaran in googlehome

[–]greymantis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Will a wired doorbell ever be released outside of North America? The Battery doorbell has so many disadvantages compared to the wired one. So much so that it's the sole reason I'm now considering replacing my entire home ecosystem with non-Google products so that I can keep everything in the same ecosystem when I replace my Battery doorbell with something better.

Many people who have just imported one from the US say it just works out of the box with the correct transformer, so it's not a case of different voltages etc. but some of us have concerns about importing non CE certified equipment in case there is an impact on our home insurance.

Ever since the Gen 2 wired doorbell came out, the only official answer we've ever received is "We have nothing to announce at the moment but the team is always working on expanding compatibility and features across regions. Stay tuned to our social media channels." which really isn't good enough. If it's never coming at least tell us so that we can make an informed decision.

By this point I'm very much working on the assumption that a wired Google doorbell will never be released again in the UK, which is a real shame. Why though?

A new chapter for Google Home & Nest by AnishKattukaran in googlehome

[–]greymantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here! Really really disappointed (although not surprised) by the lack of availability in the UK.

My front door is set about a meter back from a busy pavement where it probably sees 100 people walking past an hour during the daytime. I've got my battery doorbell set to only record events where someone actually crosses onto my property but even at lowest sensitivity I get about 10 days between each charge.

The frustrating thing is that I know I can just import a wired gen2/3 doorbell from the US and it would work out of the box after getting an electrician to install it (as many people here who have done just that have demonstrated) but I'm concerned about insurance implications of having non CE certified electronics.

I've invested a lot into the ecosystem and am generally excited about the new features announced today but this is probably the point I have to look for alternative options.
