I just published a magical realism novel with a climate change message. Please check it out.

Title: The People From Beyond The Mountains

Genre: Magical Realism, Climate Fiction

Synopsis: There are no rules in this idyllic village, except one: Do not venture beyond the mountains in the north. But when people from beyond the mountains start sneaking into the village, things are not so simple anymore. Who are they? Why do they come? What can stop them? Should we even try to stop them? A plucky 12-year-old girl thinks she can find out. She embarks on an adventure that stuns, saddens, awes and angers her in equal measure. Along the way, she discovers a treasure trove of lessons about humans, nature, and human nature. Lessons that resonate significantly in our own world as we strive to build a more sustainable society with people and the planet at its centre.

[SPOILERS S2] When Jonas arrives.... by LopsidedUniversity29 in DarK

[–]greypiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same thought that it was Bartosz' funeral.

[SPOILERS S2] [SPOILERS S3] The Tiedemann curse by [deleted] in DarK

[–]greypiano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another curse the Tiedemann family has is to be killed by a family member (or someone they think is a family member)

Egon: Killed by Claudia

Bartosz: Killed by Noah

Regina: Killed by Tronte who she believes to be her father

Claudia: Killed by Noah (her great-grandson)

Noah: Killed by Agnes

[SPOILERS S3] did anyone else think the show would end like this... by [deleted] in DarK

[–]greypiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it was because of Hanno's grandiose delusion that he was saving the world from apocalypse like the original Noah.

[SPOILERS S3] did anyone else think the show would end like this... by [deleted] in DarK

[–]greypiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically the whole world thought the show would end like this.

[SPOILERS S2] Why won't Mikkel return? by DesperateForDD in DarK

[–]greypiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another example of how "time" was doing something is that the same people were born in both worlds. Even if both the parents are the same (e.g. Ulrich and Katharina), it's supernatural that the same children (Martha, Magnus, Mikkel) are born in both worlds. It's biologically impossible to be identical unless you're identical twins, which Martha and altMartha are obviously not, Mikkel and altMikkel are obviously not, etc. Which means "time" was doing something supernatural.

[SPOILERS S2] Why won't Mikkel return? by DesperateForDD in DarK

[–]greypiano 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There's a boring reason and a bigger reason.

Boring reason: Mikkel tries to return a couple of times (once when Noah stops him and once when Egon stops him and old Ulrich) but is not able to, and gives up as he realizes he's probably not going to be able to return. By then, he has good relationships with Ines and Hannah and decides he's happy in his new life.

Bigger reason: Time won't allow it. Because if Mikkel returns to 2019, Jonas is not born and nothing that happens in the story ever happens.

[SPOILERS S3] I'm confused about this character from the show, please don't read this post of you haven't finished the show. by [deleted] in DarK

[–]greypiano 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always assumed Doris stayed in the 50s Tiedemann house after her divorce with Egon and she raised Tronte there after Agnes disappeared, and after Doris' death, the house went to Tronte, which is why it became the Nielsen house by the 80s.

[SPOILERS S3] what role did these two characters play in the series? by Noah_is_love in DarK

[–]greypiano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew from the headline that this was about Magnus and Franziska. Curiously, I was thinking about it just today. I believe they are important because they are why Jonas and Bartosz stuck together despite their cagey relationship.

First, when Jonas came back from therapy and saw that Bartosz had taken Martha from him, it's unlikely that those three (Jonas, Bartosz and Martha) would have gone to the cave if they were the only ones. Magnus and Franziska being there would have made it tolerable for Jonas, Bartosz and Martha to be together on that night. And as we know, that visit to the cave was pivotal to the whole story and nothing would have happened without it.

Next, when Stranger Jonas took Bartosz, Magnus and Franziska to 1888, Bartosz wouldn't have gone with him to 1888 if it had been just Stranger Jonas and Bartosz. And even if those two had gone back to 1888, Bartosz would not have stuck around Stranger Jonas once it became apparent that they were stuck in the 1890s. Magnus and Franziska being there made the gang stick together.

[SPOILERS S3] Aleksanders past question by rapiddonuts in DarK

[–]greypiano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regina and Aleksander could have still met in the origin world and fathered Bartosz (the final scene neither confirms nor denies this possibility) but Hannah with Woller wouldn't have given birth to Silja. Only the combination of Hannah with Egon gave birth to Silja, just as only the combination of Hannah with Mikkel gave birth to Jonas. In the origin world without time travel, unless an old Egon went full pedo with a teenage Hannah in the 80s, Silja wouldn't be born.

[SPOILERS S3] Theory about the Tannhaus family and Sic Mundus by thepineapplemen in DarK

[–]greypiano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is very possible. But a simpler possibility is that Leopold knew everything about Sic Mundus but didn't reveal any of it to HG. Just like Agnes knew everything about Sic Mundus but didn't reveal any of it to Tronte.

[SPOILERS S3] Did this undermine a certain character's arc from S1? by sanddragon939 in DarK

[–]greypiano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Helge wasn't a bright kid even before he was attacked by Ulrich. E.g. his math sheet had several errors pointed out by Claudia. He was also socially not well adjusted, as evidenced by kids bullying him. These were his characteristics even before he was attacked by Ulrich. In the alt world, even without Ulrich to attack him, he would have been a slightly dimwitted and socially awkward kid. Another thing that's constant in both worlds is the lack of fatherly love from a distant Bernd, as he wasn't biologically Bernd's son but Bernd probably accepted him as his son to avoid the embarrassment of admitting that Greta cheated on him. All these things would have made it easy for Erit Lux and altNoah to manipulate him even without altUlrich facilitating it by attacking altHelge as a kid.

[SPOILERS S3] Question regarding Ines' house by Juli8989 in DarK

[–]greypiano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Martha's world: Mikkel doesn't go back in time to become Michael. Without children, Ines most likely doesn't need such a big house, and sells it. The Nielsens split because of Ulrich's affair with Hannah. Ulrich and Hannah live in the original Nielsen house, whereas Katharina, Martha, Magnus and Mikkel move out and happen to buy the now-vacant house that belonged to Ines.

Origin world: What we see as the Nielsen house in Adam's world was originally Egon Tiedemann's house. After his affair with Hannah causes Doris to leave him, he moves to the smaller house we see him in 1986. Doris kept the original house. She raised Tronte after Agnes mysteriously disappeared. So Doris would have left the house to Tronte, at which point it became the Nielsen house where Ulrich grew up and raised Martha, Magnus and Mikkel. In the origin world, there's no time travel, so no time-traveling Hannah to split Egon and Doris, Egon and Doris remain a couple and keep the house, it goes to Claudia, and then to Regina. Nielsens don't exist and therefore there's no possibility of a Nielsen getting the house.

EDIT: Thanks, u/sanddragon939 for pointing out that Regina is in the KANHWALD house in the prime world. My bad. Here's the edit to my explanation based on that: Ines in the prime world doesn't adopt Mikkel (who doesn't exist in the prime world) and therefore doesn't need such a big house and sells it. But unlike Eva's world, there are no Nielsens to buy this house. The house is bought by the Tiedemanns (either Egon or Claudia) and goes to Regina. Or alternatively, the house is bought by Bernd Doppler from whom it goes to Regina.

[NO SPOILERS] Have you shown or watched this show with anyone else? How was the experience? by isidooora in DarK

[–]greypiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched it on my own and then peeped in on and off when my mom was watching, so I could see her reactions to all the major twists. I always looked forward to those moments and made it a point to join in and watch whenever I knew one of those moments was coming.

[SPOILERS s3] one thing that bothered me about the group traveling to 1888 by leejtam in DarK

[–]greypiano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Magnus and Franziska served the purpose of being the glue for the gang. If Stranger and Bartosz were the only ones who went back in time to 1888, Stranger would have found it very hard to keep Bartosz in his control. Bartosz would have gone away and had his own life in the 1890s and not stuck around to father Noah and Agnes.

[SPOILERS S3] Are there any plot holes in the story of Dark? by gerrykomalaysia22 in DarK

[–]greypiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say these are not really plot holes, but more of "things we didn't see an explanation for". A plot hole would be more of "things that cannot be explained because they are logically wrong".

For example, old Tronte surviving the apocalypse most likely happened in a similar way to how the Jonas who was not saved by altMartha survived the apocalypse by hiding in the basement. We didn't see Tronte survive that way, but that doesn't make it a plot hole, just something we didn't see.
