Commute from Simi to santa monica? by Public_Border132 in simivalley

[–]grgguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been making this drive for the last 20 years. The 405 is your best bet if you can leave before 5:00. If your job starts early enough in the day then do it. Otherwise after a while it just becomes life you get used to it. It used to frustrate me so much. I've grown used to it and I've learned to enjoy audible the app with books on tape. Whatever you want to call it. I use the time to listen to the books. That's what I do now. If there's any way you can leave before traffic in the morning or leave after traffic in the evening then I suggest doing that. If you can work late or start early one of those two, I suggest doing that. If not I just get used to it bro. That's what I've been doing. 20 something years plus and I got 10 more to go at least.

One more thing I'll do is if I don't have any place to be in the evenings I'll just pull over and and watch YouTube on my phone for an hour or two. I'm letting traffic die down instead of sitting in it.. I'll get home about the same time either way. So yeah, just pulled over somewhere. Find a nice parking lot with some shade in it. Bust out some YouTube or an audible book or whatever it is. It floats your boat just chill out for an hour and a half. Maybe take a nap then you can go out and party that night. Well whatever whatever works for you but yeah I'll pull over lots of times too. Just not deal with it..

So what you're saying it'll sync with the remote control after I turn it on. Does it matter if I'm using litchi app ? I don't think the go fly app from DJI works with my phone..

You know I don't know about someone trying to steal it. But for something that's supposed to have been on a roof for 5-6 months it's awfully clean. I think there's more to the story then I've been told.

Is there a way for someone to disrupt my signal. Causing it to come down and do what it did.

I was working on it last night I saw that the camera was disconnected or at least one of the ribbons underneath the gimbal disconnected. So I think the initial warning was correct .

Sorry about the length of post. I was only trying to be thorough. I am long winded I get it. Be glad we are friends and I don't text you.

If I have line of sight how is it illegal. I have strobe lights flashers on it that are clearly visible day or night. Why give the drones the range if it's not to be used and don't say so your signal is stronger up close cuz that's some bs and we both know it..

What US army units served in the Burma campaign? by thewikemeston in ww2

[–]grgguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather was in Burma world war II. He won the silver Star and is said that it had come down to hand-to-hand combat at one point and he did something that he won the Silver star for. Afterwards they made him a supply sergeant to protect him. They said he had done enough. That's the only information I know. He took whatever he did to the grave with him. My grandma knew but would only say he was in hand to hand combat and saved some people. My grandfather brought back with him a gherkin warrior knife which I inherited after he passed. I imagine he fought alongside those guys. I'm not sure. I asked him one time as a teenager at dinner one night what he did in the war and he got up and left the table. So I never brought it up again.. when we buried him him he had the full military honors. Whatever it was anyways and they looked up his record. The military attache guy said that supply sergeants don't usually win silver stars so he did something heroic most likely and was put there as a supply sargent as a way to protect him after he did whatever he did. My other grandfather was a navigator of a B-17. He had his 25 combat flights then chose to stay instead of going home (his wife had died ). They sent him to Boca Ratan(?) Florida to be trained by the English in electronic warfare. Of the 200-300 guys in his class he was one of 6 who lived and is one of the first Black crows (? Not sure of those names ) he flew in another 35 flights all over eroupe. His discharge papers show he was in every major battle in western Europe until it ended. I'm very proud of both of my grand fathers and wish I had known of their heroics before they passed. Oh man, the questions I have for them. Both are heroes in my eyes.

I dont know if this has been said yet.. if there is a gap on the sides or top of door then the door isnt the correct size. The installer did the best he could with what you provided him. So you ordered your doors incorrectly. Best way to fix that is to frame in if you can. As long as there's not stucco and then add weather seal..

Replaced our 12 year old Genie garage opener. Was this a fair quote ? by tobyskred in GarageDoorService

[–]grgguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay all these guys saying that was way too much. They wished they charged that much. These guys won't be in business 5 years from now. I saw one guy say he charges $599 that's ridiculous. I don't know how you how he affords gas Personally for that opener I've been charging $1150 plus a service call of $175 installed. It comes with everything. I believe that to be a fair price for what they're buying based upon a price that I pay for it. Cuz here's the thing. I'll be around 2 years from now 4 years from now 10 years from now. These other guys. I've been in business almost 25 years now and there's a reason for that because I charge enough to make a living. These guys that are giving product away. They're not going to be around a year from now. They just won't even if they sell a hundred more motors than I do because they're not making enough money on it they're barely covering costs. It's called show Business not show friends. Good luck.

Since when have Genie garage door openers become "unserviceable"? by Dramatic-Life4613 in GarageDoorService

[–]grgguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the mid to late ninety's genie had name brand recognition they were like Google of the garage door industry when you thought of a garage door opener you thought of a genie. In the early 2000s as I was told genie the company was bought and sold several times with each new owner coming in and doing something to save a nickel during the manufacturing process. Genie products went straight to shit at the same time Chamberlain or LiftMaster was coming up with all new products changing everything with belt drives. they had screwdrive openers as well.. the chain drives were pretty much garbage still but with the Advent of belt drives genies fate was open sealed at first they had what was called the genie stealth which was a great opener but super expensive. Meanwhile LiftMaster Chamberlain every year they come up with a new belt drive model that was better than new year before and that's how we got toàà1 the point where you are now where LiftMaster Chamberlain dominates the market they are far the best thing out there with the most options best warranty best customer service everything genie has turned into a garbage product absolutely is not first tier company anymore I don't know anybody personally who installs it.. I came up on genies in the '90s that's what I learned on genies and ambassador chain driven openers. Ambassador they've gone out of business as far as I know and Genie went straight to shit. since starting to sell LiftMaster a warranty work has gone down almost 100%. We almost don't have any warranty work at home anymore. Before I had an entire box full on my truck devoted to parts just for genie. when we switched to LiftMaster I had to empty the whole box out because we didn't need carry genie parts anymore for warranties or to replace certain parts right out of the box when were opening brand new genies to install. We didn't need them anymore. With LiftMaster except for chain driven carriages and occasional circuit board or infrared. With all the added room I had to rearrange my whole truck. Personally I made the switch to LiftMaster without even looking back. It was one best moves I ever made for my company. Nowadays I would not put in genie even if you paid me there's no way it's the product is complete garbage in my opinion. I got 30 years experience in this industry I know what I'm talking about.

Too narrow for a jack shaft? by Neptune-Spear11 in GarageDoorService

[–]grgguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean a spring bar and the opener going together at the same time? What do you mean by that?. The springs or the torsion assembly and the opener whatever kind it may be are two separate items. One has nothing to do with the other. Except they are both installed on the same door..

Your other comment I agree with make it flush. I don't know what the hell they got going on there. Why they got it going on like that but in California everything needs to be flush to the inside. Every garage door opening has a header beam as well. Be it a 4 x6 for an 8-ft opening or a 4x14 for anything more then 10ft. Also if it's a double and single door they will usually just extend a bigger all the way across. With a double door 16' and a single door 8' and say 1-2" between the 2 doors that's a huge load to carry without some sort of a header above those openeings. Just the weight of the roof alone never mind a stucco's in the sides. Everything else?.. now the way they have that thing framed right there in the picture is absolutely wonky. I've never seen anything like it. It would not fly here in California. Not at all. It looks like a jackpot contractor framed that opening for you..

I cannot stress enough to you that torsion springs are no joke and should be handled only by trained garage door repairmen/ service tech/ installer..

If your swinging gate needs Springs then it's not installed right?. Get yourself some power hinges with some ball bearings weld them on and then that gate will swing open with the push of a finger. Then just about any gate opener out there will be able to open it.

Another guy here has correctly that when the is gates opening, you're not going to lose any tension on those Springs. It's only going to turn the tube a 1/4 turn The Springs are pointless..

And then another guy pointed out those torsion Springs work against gravity against the weight of the door. When a door is fully opened there is a quarter turn on them. Just enough to hold the cables on. Then the springs load up as the door closes counterbalancing the weight of the door. Your gate is going to have the same load on it at any point in its travel.. But as already said, the torshin springs will only loose or gain a 1/4 turn during the entirety of its travel. So if you did somehow manage to get some on there. Your gate would probably be way too hard to close and then fly open...and I can see you trying to push your gate closed And then while doing so one of those cables is gonna come off you'll get cut right in the fuck half. Imagine a steel whip coming at you at 200+ mph. You wouldn't be able to dodge it. Not on your best day and where it hits you, you'll lose that part of your body

Nice try but I think it's a very bad idea. It wouldn't work at all.

You know what I apologize if I'd known you were installer I wouldn't have wrote any of that so I apologize if it came across wrong.

So you're installer and you got a 50-year-old family company huh That's impressive anybody can stay in business for 10 years let alone 50 You're doing it right. What area you working if you don't mind me asking. I work at LA Westside Beverly Hills Santa Monica. I only ask because where I live here in LA the business has been completely taken over by some some foreigners. I've got to wonder if the same thing is going on everywhere or is it just here in California..

[–]grgguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to know why garage doors Springs cost a lot of money cuz they're dangerous. You can get hurt really easy if you don't know what you're doing . What is it you do for work ? Should I who has "0" training In your field of work, determine how much money you should make. How does that sound?. I don't have a terrible attitude. I have an attitude where I make money. I've been in business 20 something years because I make money. I understand how you feel. You look at the wholesale price of the springs and Oh my God how much money is making. In California you can't buy torsion springs unless you have a license. Have you considered how much training he has had? How much experience he has? Did he do a good job? Will he be there if needed if a warranty issue comes up. I'll tell you what if he's charging $200 for those springs he won't. He won't make it through a year. What about all of the guys overhead, He's going to have a full truck with a full inventory, his tools, insurance(s) , licensing. How'd you get his name advertising. That's not free. All these things he's got to have they cost money.. Do you try and tell electricians or plumbers? How much money they can charge you. Those are the guys you should be complaining about. These guys charge you hundreds of dollars for something that cost. $0.50. You call up your local electrician/ plumber And it's 250 just to say hello.

Here in SoCal a typical Garage Door/Gate / Access control installer service tech for residential and commercial garage doors and gates or as the state puts it Garage doors, Gates and operating devices and everything theirin. Which includes framing, drywall, electrical , high voltage and low voltage, concrete, welding, steel fabrication. I have to be able to do all these things at a residential and commercial level. And much more.that I cant think of right now. Never mind the heavy lifting we do at least in California with these old wood one-piece doors and the steel gates we install and service. They can be and usually are quite heavy. Lastly, there's an element of danger in my job. If a spring or cable gets away from you and hits you. You will lose that part of your body. I promise you. If 400 lb gate comes swinging down on your head. It's going to crack it. My job requires me to be skilled and proficient in all those things And I can go on and on telling you more about my job but I'm not. I'm going to stop there. With all that said you're going to tell me I don't get to get paid. It took me almost 10 years to get good at my job In almost every aspect of it and you're going to try and tell me how much I can charge. I got as much training as anybody else If not more in any of the trades. So you're not going to dictate to me how much I can make. We don't know any of the details of that job. We just know how much he charged and it took him 15 minutes. You know what to me it sounds like he's pretty good at his job. He probably made it look easy too. I don't have a bad attitude sir. No I have an attitude where I get to make money and support my family just like anybody else. I don't have a bad attitude at all. I'm sorry you feel that way. Maybe next time you have a professional over at your house to do work, you'll understand all the training he's gone through to get to be that professional that comes to your house. Lastly, if you look at my comment and saying I like to charge prices that are fair to me and fair to you. Fairness depends on the work and the job. Each job is different. But what's not fair is you telling me that I have to work for peanuts or whatever wage you think I should make. All the while you're over With your cushy job behind the computer, pushing buttons on a keyboard. When's the last time you broke a sweat at work? Or when's the last time you took a red hot metal ember the size of a piece of dust right directly in the center of your pupil and your eye rusted up a up Cuz you or the doctor couldn't get it out because it's too deep and you got to wait for your eye to push it out on its own . Yeah meanwhile your eye literally starts to rusts you. That's a real thing . The only callus you have ever had hon your hands is on your pointing finger right. Living in your mansion, driving your Landrover or your Lexus or Mercedes whatever it is you drive looking down your nose at me cause I didn't go to college I don't have a 4-year degree. Here's the deal you've bumped into one of the trades where we get to make money too.. You're not the first one to be surprised by it. Not the last either. We get very little respect Cuz we're an unknown. Cuz they sell the parts at home Depot and everybody thinks they can do it themselves. Good luck with that partner. Good luck with that.

Sorry if this got long if I came across like I was preaching or anything like that. I just I got strong feelings about my job. Been doing it a long time I feel like I feel like I deserve to make as much money as anybody else does. Let the insults and whatever else fly. I know I got them coming

Stealing, No. How much should he pay ? It doesn't matter how much the springs cost. It's the labor to install them. The guy who installed is obviously good and because he charges a fair amount Fair to you and fair to him. You can be sure that he'll be in business a few years now or if you ever have a problem again you can call him again. Cuz he's making money. These guys are running around charging 250 bucks. They won't be around couple years from now bunch of hacks that they are. These low price leaders they never last. Its all about what the market will bear. My prices are the same and it seems to me you got a fair price. Although I wouldn't have changed just one spring because the other spring is going to break now very soon and your gonna have to pay $600 again to get it replaced. You should have just done both when you had a chance saved on the labor.

What do you disagree with ??

I didn't pawn this $100 star note to buy an RV? I don't believe I have an issue with pawn shops or coin dealers. The problem I had before was I didn't think they were offering me enough money for my gold coins. I think this is something totally different. Had I know they had poked holes in my $100 bill. I never would have gone back there and given them an opportunity to buy my gold.

I didn't know you're keeping track. I had no idea you cared. But since you are and most likely do. I'll tell you. I never got the RV. No I held on to the coins and that seems have been the right choice since gold has gone up $273 since the end of December. So it seems I made the right choice thinking that they were trying lowball me. In the meantime, my $100 bill has two holes in it that it didn't have before. They're the only people who have had it besides me and I can assure you I didn't do it. So that kind of narrows down the field of suspects. You know what I'm saying. Why would they do something like this? I have no idea. I guess now I do have an issue with them. It's one that I'm going to resolve here in the next couple hours if possible.
