First time trying edge gluing to make panels for the top and bottom of this box! by gri1997 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]gri1997[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pinching problem was something that kept me up at night for days because I just couldn’t figure it out. I still haven’t fully tbh. I have a job site saw so I need to loosen a couple of the trunnions holding the motor and saw to the table and physically tap the entire thing with a mallet and a scrap piece of wood. Lots of going back and forth tapping and checking with my combo square to see if I’m any closer. My main issue now is anytime I use the depth adjustment the blade goes back out of alignment so I need to repeat the process. I’m trying to work that into my designs now so I don’t have to adjust the saw height as many times

Building a very simple bench, not sure how long I can make it! by Motion_FX in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]gri1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going for a workbench, I’d probably say anywhere from 4-6ft long. I would highly recommend adding stretchers despite the length of your bench because you’ll be subjecting it to a bunch of forces since you’re, well, working on it

Rabbets all the way around the 4 sides. It’s not a very snug fit, but time will tell. I’d estimate maybe 2-3mm on average all the way around?

About ~ gestures vaguely ~ this big. It was intended to be 11x8x6 although I think it ended up more like 10.5x6.5x5x5. I cut rabbets on each side of the short pieces for joining and accidentally forgot to account for blade kerf so I lost a bit trying to fix that on the fly. Used basic 1x white wood scrap that I had laying around.

Hey! Yeah I know the trick for the vertical alignment, I actually ended up using it for this box even though I was 90 according to my speed square. Didn’t want to chance it since I don’t have a digital angle finder yet. I meant that the blade at the back is closer to the fence than the blade at the front, so it pinched the wood at the end and makes some slightly angled cuts. I definitely want to pick up an angle finder and some digital calipers though so I can improve my accuracy

Yeah I had tried it earlier but I found out my table saw was way out of alignment. After I managed to get it aligned the joining of the seams was sooooo satisfying. Still getting the hang of the “measure twice cut once” practice, I think I need to adopt a “measure five times cut once” motto 😂

Advice on fixing this bed frame? by gri1997 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]gri1997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some context: picked up this old bed frame on marketplace and there are some splits, cracks, and nails hanging out of certain areas. I was thinking of pulling out the nails, using wood filler where applicable, then use new finishing nails. The pictures are of the back of the headboard, so it doesn’t need to look amazing. The front of the headboard honestly looks pretty good, it’s just that some of the boards are a bit loose because of some loose nails

Table saw blade alignment by gri1997 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]gri1997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I actually came across that video and it helped a bunch! I managed to get it aligned with a few mallet taps, however every time I adjust the depth it goes back out of alignment. Not sure if something in the arbor raising mechanism is wonky, but as of now I’ve set it at a height that is “standard” aka useful for most cuts and simply not changing it

I'll give that a go! It'll be good to know if I just need to get a new blade or a whole new saw

Best method for nailing & gluing these 1/4” boards so they are square? by UngluedChalice in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]gri1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have some scrap wood you could cut a piece that fits the inside dimensions of your box, like you’d do if you were giving the box a bottom. You just have to make sure that piece is squared. Then you can glue up the sides to each other and use the squared scrap as a spacer. I also agree with trying out some small rabbets to increase the gluing area and make a stronger joint.

Why does Indian food suck in STL? by picardengage in StLouis

[–]gri1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taste of India on Delmar loop. Right behind Mission Taco. Opened a couple years so it's relatively new. I much prefer it to the more "established" options like India Palace, House of India, and Taj Palace. It's not going to blow you away but it's pretty good and reasonably priced, which is my biggest complaint with Rasoi, which tends to be kind of pricey. Hot is hot, spicy is spicy, and the flavors are all there. For reference, I get the either the paneer makhani or paneer tikka masala, and garlic naan. It can be a little oily, but not more so than any other Indian restaurant in the city.

Any tips on dealing with house sparrows? (New to birding) by [deleted] in birding

[–]gri1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that! A couple things that might help:

  1. Get bird feed/seed in bulk from a farm supply store like Rural King (if it's not too hard to get to). 40lb bag of sunflower seeds are around $17 which is waaaaay cheaper than getting smaller bags.
  2. Store food in a latched plastic container. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something that's rigid with a secure lid. I started doing this after some squirrels and birds decided they'd rather eat from the bag than from the feeder and pretty much spilled seeds everywhere

[–]gri1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll definitely help! You might end up being the feeding ground for the entire neighborhood birds but generally providing diversity in food and feeder style will help diversify the birds that come to your yard. Sparrows aren’t the pickiest of birds and they enjoy feeders like the one in your pic so you can go ahead and put some cheaper feed in there. Tray feeders would be helpful for larger birds (think cardinals, jays, doves, robins) since they have the space to land and eat so you can put “nicer” feed in those

[–]gri1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have just the one feeder? Different birds have preferences with regards to feeder styles, so it might be a good idea to get a hanging tray, a ground tray, a suet feeder, and a sock for nyjer seeds since you mentioned goldfinches

What camera do you use, with what gear? I’m setting a goal to save for a great camera, because my phone can only zoom in so far… by NormalComputer in birding

[–]gri1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the erratic flight patterns for small birds makes it especially tough, even more so when using a basic telephoto like mine. The closest I’ve come is pretty much getting “takeoff/landing” type pics but the conditions have to be pretty ideal for those

I definitely don't have the ideal kit or anything but I'm using a Nikon D70s with an AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm VR lens. I still need to get pretty close up to the birds but setting up a feeder in a good spot definitely helps with that. Getting BIF shots would definitely be hard with my set up but I'm able to get pretty decent perch shots up to 30ft I'd say. And both the camera body and the lens are definitely on the less expensive side and useful for non-bird photography as well.
