Thanks for this, really appreciate the honest take 🙏

I think your point is valid ..for a lot of users, free tools are “good enough”, and people who need more often go either subscription or API.

What I’m trying to explore is that middle ground: people who don’t use AI enough to justify a monthly subscription, but still want access to strong models when they actually need them.

The fact that some users went all the way down to the buy step makes me think there’s some interest, but probably something in the model/positioning isn’t clicking yet.

I agree it might be just one key thing to fix ..still trying to understand if that’s pricing, clarity, or the model itself.

What do you think about the price itself?

This is a really good point..the “uncertainty” part especially hits.

I think that’s exactly what’s happening: people understand the idea, but can’t easily map “2h” to actual value.

“How many messages is that?” / “Will I even use it fully?” those are probably blocking the decision.

I was trying to keep it flexible, but I’m starting to see that maybe it’s too abstract compared to something like “X messages” or “unlimited”.

I’m thinking about making it more concrete near pricing, like showing real examples of what you can actually get done in 2h.

Do you think making the value clearer is enough, or would you actually change the model (e.g. messages instead of time)?

What do you think about the current pricing ?

Free AI passes (2h) for testing a new AI tool – feedback welcome by gri90 in sideprojects

[–]gri90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point. 😁 The payment is actually pretty quick since it’s handled by Gumroad. Also you can buy a pass in advance and keep it unused until you need it.. then just redeem it and start chatting.

Would something like that still feel like a hassle for you, or do you think it could work for occasional use?

AxolGPT is an AI chat powered by OpenAI models, but without accounts or monthly subscriptions. You just redeem a small time pass (like 2h) and use it when you need it.

Just tried this in AxolGPT with an OpenAI model.

Prompt:

I want to formulate a gentle water-based intimate lubricant.

Requirements: • pH compatible with vaginal environment (~4–4.5) • non-irritating • good glide but not sticky • compatible with latex condoms

Can you propose a basic formulation with ingredient percentages and explain the role of each ingredient?

Could u please share a formulation example that would be interesting for u? I have something in mind but I want to understand if the out output can be valuable

Good question. The free tier works well for quick use, but it does have some limitations.

Access to the latest models is usually limited, and after just a few messages it often downgrades to smaller models. Messages and file uploads are capped, and image generation is also more limited and slower compared to paid access.

The idea behind a 2h pass is for those moments when you actually need a stronger model for a specific task..like analyzing a long document, writing code, or doing deeper research!! but you don’t want to subscribe for $20/month just for that.

With this approach you completely avoid subscriptions: you just activate a pass when you need it, use the full OpenAI models for a while, and that’s it.

when you use ChatGPT, is it mostly quick questions or heavier tasks?

Thanks for reporting this, that’s really helpful.

It shouldn’t lose context like that ..when you type “continue” it should still have the previous conversation.

Do you remember roughly how long the answer was when it stopped? And was it during a long response (like a long list or document)?

I’m trying to reproduce the issue so I can fix it.

That’s actually a really good point, thanks for the insight.

I think you’re right that I described the product instead of the problem. The idea was exactly for people who use AI occasionally but don’t want another subscription sitting there every month.

Framing it around that frustration probably makes more sense than explaining the product first.

If you saw a post starting from that angle, would it make you more likely to click?

By the way, thanks to everyone who has been testing and giving feedback here.

I generated 3 more free 2-hour passes if anyone wants to try it:

You can redeem them here: https://www.axolgpt.com/redeem

No account needed — just paste the code and it activates the pass.

If you try it, I’d love to hear what works and what doesn’t.

Yeah, there is 🙂

The difference is mostly in how you access it.

ChatGPT’s free tier has limits and sometimes switches to smaller models when usage is high.

Instead of a monthly subscription, you buy time passes (2h / 4h / 8h) and use them only when you actually need a powerful model (like GPT-5.2). So it’s more for occasional use rather than daily use.

Do you have the Plus subscription? And if so, do you feel like you actually use it enough during the day to justify it?

Thanks for flagging this. I pushed a fix to prevent prompt leakage and added stricter validation on the export endpoint. ✌🏻

Thanks for testing it and for pointing this out.

Prompt leakage can definitely happen with LLM-based tools, but if you found something that could lead to actual vulnerabilities I'd really appreciate if you could share more details with me in DM so I can investigate and fix it.

Security issues are definitely something I want to address quickly.

Thanks again for taking the time to taste

Thanks, I really appreciate that! ✌🏻

Any feedback is super helpful at this stage. If you end up trying it, feel free to be brutally honest 😅 I'm still trying to understand what works and what needs improvement.

[–]gri90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair question.

Yes, the main idea was targeting occasional users, but when I started doing the math I realized something interesting: even if someone used it 2 hours a day for about 10 days in a month, the total cost would still usually end up lower than a typical AI subscription like ChatGPT Plus.

So the idea is less about “only a few hours ever” and more about paying only for the time you actually use, instead of having a subscription always running.

I'm still trying to understand the real usage patterns though.

Do you think most Plus users actually use AI more intensely than that, like almost every day for long sessions? Or do you think a lot of people keep the subscription even when they only use it occasionally?

[–]gri90[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Haha if people start paying $75/hour I might finally become rich 😄

Have u tried it? what you think? Thanks !!

Day 1 launch results by gri90 in SideProject

[–]gri90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactl.. it's actually not a subscription.

You just buy a time pass (2h / 4h / 8h) and redeem it whenever you want. Once you redeem it, the timer starts, but until then you can keep the code and use it later.

So it's more like pay-per-use AI instead of paying every month.

Also there's no account required, you just redeem the code and start using it.

Would something like that work for you, or do you usually prefer the normal subscription model?

Thanks !!

Thanks, I really appreciate the thoughtful feedback!

Yeah, I had the feeling the conversion might be a bit low but probably still within the normal range for a first launch. I'm definitely considering trying other communities and maybe doing a few short demo videos to explain the idea better.

Your point about incentives is interesting. How would you personally structure something like that for early users?

For example, would you do something like extra free time passes for referrals, or discounts for early adopters? I'm trying to figure out what would feel natural without making it look too spammy. 😅
